Could anyone that uses these tools regularly tell if this a better than jq for querying?
papruapap··on Belgium launches nationwide safe harbor for ethical hackers

The worst offender is AMZ, all the rest big tech are pretty open-source friendly.

papruapap··on Apple orders entire supply of TSMC's 3nm chips for iPhone 15 Pro and M3 Macs
Can we stop the hyperboling? The amount of multitasking we can do on consumer computers today is nowhere close what is what possible only 10 years ago.

About text editors... you can use blazing fast editors if you want like cli-base ones, notepad++ or sublimetext... If devs are not using those to code anymore there may be reasons, right?

papruapap··on Re-License Vaultwarden to AGPLv3
They will do a fancy wrapper and no credits will be given though. Users will never see MyApp only the MyAppFancyCloudVersion

I just feel that eventually Linux will have to move to the sandboxed model for apps like Android and, recently, Windows.
papruapap··on Apple: The only big tech giant going against the job cuts tide
thank you, looks like you are right.
papruapap··on MusicLM: Generating music from text
Well... no all releases have to be toys for your average twitter user to play with. Most of them are just academic stuff to show team progress.
papruapap··on Apple: The only big tech giant going against the job cuts tide
I wonder how much of this "growth" is because inflation and ads. Also, Apple benefits on others' companies doing well.

But yeah, I think Apple brand loyalty is at all time high.

papruapap··on Apple: The only big tech giant going against the job cuts tide
"(and almost entirely - warehouse/logistics)"

any source for that claim?

papruapap··on Microsoft to lay off 10k workers
eehh, no? Pretty sure I pay for mine every month (NL).
papruapap··on Investors conclude that Tesla is a carmaker, not a tech firm
like how they outsourced their chips, right? They only designed a square with a M1 stamped on it.
papruapap··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
I think trackers eventually can find out that bad actors and bad them out. If you claimed to have sent 100 kb but nobody reported to have received them then you are flagged.
papruapap··on Older iPhones bricked for being too outdated, locking users from data [video]
Newer versions are usually slower than older ones (expected to be run on faster devices).
papruapap··on Tell HN: Uber has blocked my account for years, won't tell me why
I think they started to allow drivers to cancel rides so they can claim they are not employees. So now drivers cancel the rides that are no very profitable.
papruapap··on Seeing through hardware counters: A journey to 3x performance increase
Why every thread in HN speak shit about Frontend developers? Like if BE is any better, most of them still use Java which is has bad memory and cpu performance, and unlike FE, BE have options (any native, GC-free language). Pretty sure 99% Java developers dont have any idea how the JVM works and 99,99% how to tune for better performance, they just move to the next shiny JVM implementation (omg Graalvm) and call it a day.
papruapap··on Sonic: Fast, lightweight and schema-less search backend
tbh "Text Search" is a vague description for these kind of softwares, so I guess everyone go with elasticsearch-like.
papruapap··on Transmission 4.0.0 beta 1
This would be cool but part of me think that most web users will just leach to watch movies in their browsers.
papruapap··on Winamp 5.9
to be fair, Winamp is probably one of the smoothest softwares ever. A lot of new "native" apps have transitions and fancy effects that makes them as slow as the electron-based ones.
papruapap··on AMD Launches Ryzen 7000 Series Desktop Processors with Zen 4 Architecture
especially since mobo manufactures were not happy with this longevity either
papruapap··on The end of Optane is bad news
I am a bit ignorant in OS stuff but isnt that managed by the filesystem? I think some people were using them as LOG drives in ZFS fs.

How do you know they use semver? Major version is just a marketing thing for many frameworks. Node is one of them too.

Even Go, one of the most boring (in the good sense) languages, considered to do the same thing at some point (when included generics).

papruapap··on Unity merges with IronSource
prob is a matter of time before their force ads in the unity free-tier, all roads lead to Rome, good news for Godot I guess.
papruapap··on Ask HN: Why isn't GWT or Vaadin more popular among Java developers?
I dont think you have checked Blazor runtime libraries size. Last time I tried, it downloaded 5MB wasm files to the client in a simple hello-world screen.
papruapap··on Selfhosting on Localhost
disagree, he doesnt explain how he backups stuff but I guess it is a on external server (otherwise he will lose everything in case the laptop is lost). If you are using an external server you might as well setup everything there (ideally a raspi/minipc). I have a lot of devices (tablet, mobile, laptop, desktop and home media) and being able to use all services from all devices is pretty convenient.
