papito··on Elon Musk wants to open a university in Texas
It's obviously going to be all male - the first ALL INCEL university.

No women will want to be there, if there are any left in the Texas higher education system at all, considering they are going full Handmaid's Tale.

papito··on The AI Trust Crisis
They have so much data about you that they can predict what you are going to do or look for before you know it yourself.

Technology good enough is indistinguishable from magic.

papito··on OpenAI Announces $10M Superalignment Grants
I am not sure autonomous driving will arrive in the next 10 years, let alone AGI.

These people are masterful con artists, throwing out buzzwords to hoover up billions of gullible VC dollars (a single tear rolls down my eye).

How is that Web 3.0 going? Did we build Richard Hendricks's new Internet yet - sometimes I think they take ideas from the HBO comedy just to f*k with us.

Granted, LLMs are a much more useful and substantial tech than Blockchain, it's an insult to [biological] intelligence to suggest that if we somehow train these things on JUST a bit more data, they will go sentient and murder us all.

The AI image generators still don't know that humans have five fingers. I think it's a long way to super-intelligence, friends.

papito··on The pro-Israel information war
TikTok is a Chinese product, and therefore inseparable from the Communist Party. This may also be a factor. It's the safest (read: more moderated and controlled) large social media platform. Why? It may seem valuable to cause havoc in the US electorate at a critical time, splitting the age groups and driving a wedge hard.

For the terminally-online students this issue has almost become a litmus test - "If you are pro-Israel, you are not one of us. They say so on TikTok."

This is a very good example of how social media completely takes over and leads the herd blindly in one direction, either through manipulation, or through just natural hype and bandwagon effect.

In the past we had a few friends who would subject us to peer pressure and convince us to do stupid shit.

Now these kids are in global peer pressure groups of millions.

papito··on Inside OpenAI's crisis over the future of artificial intelligence
> who genuinely believe in a singularity-type AI that would have the potential to wipe out humanity

Believe? They genuinely welcome it. Larry Page, for example, in another recent NYT piece.

Marc Andreeseen?

"Effective accelerationism aims to follow the 'will of the universe': leaning into the thermodynamic bias towards futures with greater and smarter civilizations that are more effective at finding/extracting free energy from the universe," and "E/acc has no particular allegiance to the biological substrate for intelligence and life, in contrast to transhumanism."

These people are so up their own asses, they completely lost the plot. These are the individuals who will self-regulate, also while casually musing about systematic genocide of the entire planet.

A superior race of being that is more efficient and which is to replace us? Geeee, never heard that one before. Sounds real nice. Maybe it can build very efficient gas chambers and furnaces too so it can thin the herd faster, eh!

AI is less of a problem than the people around it, who are borderline certifiable, but at least are raging sociopaths who masquerade as "thinkers". Dude, you were a good coder who came up with a better way of ranking pages when the field was wide open. Calm down.

papito··on Journalists should be skeptical of all sources including scientists
There are professional journalists out there who in most organizations will get into hot water or lose their jobs if they fabricate news or sources.

They will have biases, they will make mistakes, but most of them will do at least some due diligence, and together with fact checkers - this is the best we have.

Accept that and move on - or sit there and tell yourself that "nothing is true, nothing is real". Get your news from @HotJerseyGirl1998.

papito··on Twitter has stopped paying its Google Cloud bills
"You stopped paying your landlord? Brilliant!"
papito··on Ask HN: Is Elon Musk Destroying Twitter?
With cars and rockets there is a lot of government regulation and standards. Musk cannot bypass that, and that's why he is not involved into the day-to-day. He has no interest in the nitty gritty and he loses patience right away. The adults are running the grown-up businesses.

With Twitter, it's only Elon. There is no one in his way. He can do whatever he wants. If the other industries were not regulated, he would be a serial Stockton Rush disaster artist.

papito··on Twitter Is DDOSing Itself
May I suggest 8chan? Almost no moderation at all, but make sure you have a gallon of Clorox by your desk because you will want to pour that into your eyes.
papito··on Twitter Is DDOSing Itself
I agree about healthcare. Employees in the United States over-perform because we can't risk losing health insurance and ending up in financial ruin.

H1-B, now, as much as I am sympathetic to that (an immigrant coming from extreme poverty myself), I don't understand why HN treats losing a work visa as a death sentence.

The tragedy here is what exactly? That you get to go home to your family and a country with a safety net and free healthcare, as bad as it might be? Before you apply for a new job? Is that really worse than some narcissistic rich douche shaving the years off your life by working you into the ground like this?

papito··on Tell HN: Twitter switched temporarily to rate limited mode
Imagine spending countless hours building up your follower base and accumulating the social media cachet, if you will, only to have Google shut it down in three years. Because that's exactly how that would go.
papito··on Tell HN: Twitter switched temporarily to rate limited mode
As a compulsive Twitter user who follows the Russian invasion of Ukraine non-stop, I thank Elon from the bottom of my heart for ridding me of my addiction. I am also trying to launch a product, so the timing is [chef's kiss]/
papito··on Tell HN: Twitter switched temporarily to rate limited mode
There is a term for it - a "glass cliff". You hire a woman to take the fall for you.
papito··on Twitter Is DDOSing Itself
I don't have a problem with any of the three.
papito··on Twitter now requires an account to view tweets
This EXTREME EMERGENCY that Musk is talking about is not AI - it's Musk himself.

He is killing engagement and ad income, has to slow the bleed, and is now looking under every rock for some gains, GOTO 1.

papito··on Twitter now requires an account to view tweets
Leave it to Musk to create a hair-on-fire emergency out of a regular cup of coffee. "EXTREME"! Please...

But hey, I am eternally grateful. As a super-compulsive Twitter user, I read accounts and my own lists after I log out. This fixes it.

Have your "emergency", Elon.

papito··on Far Cry 1.34 source code (2006)
As a Far Cry fanatic, even the difference between Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4 is substantial. Far Cry 3 is one of those games where the gameplay is so good, you don't even pay attention to graphics, but with 4, you are on a different planet.
papito··on National Geographic lays off its last remaining staff writers
There is nothing wrong with Capitalism given the right incentives, proper controls, and some social responsibility. It used to work, until the rich gutted oversight and regulations.
papito··on National Geographic lays off its last remaining staff writers
It's kind of similar to tech. All these brilliant "executives" turned out to be complete imbeciles - unless they operate in an environment where money grows on trees and the economy is on fire (not that it's bad in the first place).

The [US] economy is actually fine, and all they know how to do is gut their own companies to "save" money.

What about the database contents?
papito··on A Senior Engineer’s Guide to FAANG Interviews
Enabling FEELS great, but you are still just making (less) money - you are a work for hire no matter what. And it's a lot of work - making someone ELSE rich.

Now, if you are entrepreneurial and aiming to start something of your own, a smaller company will force you to wear many hats and become the jack of all trades, learning tons.

I say, do it when you are younger - you will have more time, more energy, and you will need to be learning a lot. And later on - be a mercenary for money.

papito··on A Senior Engineer’s Guide to FAANG Interviews
I've succeeded with interviews looking for three things:

* Find a candidate who takes apart with ease a couple of rather rudimentary programming problems. NOTHING crazy. Something practical and easy to understand the purpose of.

* Look for passion in technology and coding. Ask them what they would learn or do if they didn't have to work for a year.

* Look for rapid upward trajectory (potential). Someone doing the same thing for 5 years, meh. Someone going from data entry to automating a gnarly task with Go in a year - give me a ticket on that rocket ship.

papito··on Thoughts on Svelte(Kit), one year and 3B requests later
A well-tooled environment does not just spring out of an ether. Maintaining proper tooling in a distributed system often requires more work than the system itself. In a lot of cases, the business does not even consider this kind of time commitment, pushing the team to churn out features, and who eventually just bog down in insane complexity.
papito··on Thoughts on Svelte(Kit), one year and 3B requests later
I resisted learning a lot of it knowing that there will be a snap-back to simpler designs long-term, and it's happening now.

And when I tried, it went nowhere. After months of work on my side project with Electron, Typescript, and Vue, I was in the same place because every time I opened IntelliJ, it seemed all of my effort went into just having it build again.

Now I chose ArrowJS for my project, and it's been a delight. Look, I get it, but I would refrain from accusing the other person of laziness in this case.

Learnings from 5 years of tech startup code audits: https://kenkantzer.com/learnings-from-5-years-of-tech-startu...

The very first two points prove that it's not just me.

papito··on Thoughts on Svelte(Kit), one year and 3B requests later
It's the second, younger generation of devs who are realizing that "complexity kills". Those of us who started in 2000's have already seen this. It's a natural cycle. We are seeing a spring-back to monoliths and away from micro-services and crazy tooling chains.

It was completely unnecessary, and most importantly, cost the industry a fortune. If you are older, you have been wondering why you need to work more to achieve less. To me this has been demoralizing, and actually put me through some tough cycles of depression. I no longer enjoy this job. I used to DO things and walk away from my desk every day having a sense of achievement. Now it takes 3 days to set up your microservices locally just to reproduce a bug, apparently because your system with moderate traffic needs to look like Shopify.

Bad example - Shopify is a monolith.

papito··on Apple could force a 111-year-old fruit company to change its Apple logo
Lord forbid the fruit company and its employees make an extra buck when the customers get confused and buy a bunch of fruit instead of an iPhone. "So, how do I start the metaverse on this..."

I understand the whole thing about positive association with a successful company, but come on. How insecure can you be?

papito··on Twitter and Reddit: All Social Media Sites Will Die (and Get Replaced)
This is also why everything on the Internet is NOT forever. Eventually the data that you post on that one site will disappear, get absorbed into some data lake when the company goes under, and eventually get out of date and become irrelevant as it will be unusable for targeting - your ad profile will change with age.
papito··on PostgreSQL reconsiders its process-based model
This has Python 3 vibes.
papito··on Make microservices look like monoliths
I have yet to work at a company where teams were so discipled in their silo with API version control and backward compatibility that it did not require cross-team alignment. This is largely a theory and a myth.
