papito··on Monoliths are not dinosaurs
We will be going back. After the last binge, torching through piles of cash to do resume-driven development, companies are now looking to be lean. You can't really survive if you are doing microservices and trying to actually build something with a team cut by 75%.

I am already seeing this newly discovered love of simple, fast monoliths and the developer ergonomics they offer. What is old is new again - we are at the beginning of this cycle. The older generation learned that "complexity kills", the new generation is beginning to get it as well.

papito··on Monoliths are not dinosaurs
This is a very nice academic theory, but in real life you get half-assed, half-implemented hairballs that suck out your will to live if you have to untangle that.
papito··on Monoliths are not dinosaurs
I think that quote makes sense if you assume that the complexity is required. Over-engineering is a whole different topic.

The problem is that the shops that move from monoliths to distributed systems are under the impression that all of their problems are now magically over "because microservices".

papito··on If You Double-Park and You’re Rich, Should You Pay a Higher Fine?
That's a pretty bold move for a drug dealer. I imagine they'd try and keep low profile to not invite a knock on the door. I guess things are different in Europe :)
papito··on JPMorgan Chase Bank Assumes All the Deposits of First Republic Bank
WHY did they take the hit? Because the word was out these banks were putting all of their eggs in one bond basket at the time of increasing interest rates. I am a just a simple country 401K investor, and even I knew not to do that.
papito··on JPMorgan Chase Bank Assumes All the Deposits of First Republic Bank
"Larger banking behemoths" is NOT the solution - it's the result of deregulation and gutting of oversight - also referred to by libertarians here as "small government".

These banks should have been aggressively audited and diversification should have been enforced, as it used to be. We just keep going in this "deregulate-collapse-regulate" cycle.

papito··on Startup Playbook
Right, but the original article is about startups :)

Life is a wide-ranging buffet of risks, just like the stock market. You can choose anywhere from bonds (career, stable job) to penny stocks (startups).

papito··on Startup Playbook
What you are saying is that it may increase your odds of success, but it by no means guarantees it.

If you do nothing - you won't succeed. If you do everything - you may succeed.

papito··on Half of vinyl buyers in the U.S. don’t have a record player: study
Well, it's not LIKE meditation :) It is meditation. The process of the ritual focuses the mind on the task at hand.
papito··on Steven Spielberg: ‘No film should be revised’ based on modern sensitivity
One can avoid being called a hypocrite, moral relativism conversation aside, by doing one thing - not judging others publicly.
papito··on Steven Spielberg: ‘No film should be revised’ based on modern sensitivity
I think sometimes. I am sure there are some "holier than though" individuals that are thoroughly apolitical.

Here in the United States, a certain political party all but appropriated Christianity for themselves, even though their own platform (or now lack of one) is the direct opposite of what the religion teaches.

papito··on Steven Spielberg: ‘No film should be revised’ based on modern sensitivity
That's political, but this is the new morality police.

I am still recovering from the religious "moral values" people who were insufferable as recently as a few years ago, and who have proven to be hypocrites on just shocking levels.

This movement of the "white, fluffy and righteous" is just taking their place.

papito··on Steven Spielberg: ‘No film should be revised’ based on modern sensitivity
Instead of trying to hide from the past, how about we use the art of that era to teach the new generation why certain things are wrong?

It's like drinking to forget instead of confronting the issues head on. You pretend it's not there, then you sober up - nope, still there.

I don't think the people who want to sanitize our past and who want to cancel others based on something done or said 20 years ago (when it was acceptable) understand that THEY will be judged by a different set of rules decades from now.

Laws are not retroactive.

papito··on Netflix loses 1M users in Spain over password policing
So it lost users, not paying customers. I don't see how that's bad for Netflix. Everyone is in a tizzy about not being able to use a product for free. Pay for your shit. Netflix owes you nothing.

I feel strongly about it - and I don't even have a product to sell.

papito··on Elon Musk Sells Tucker Carlson His Conservative Vision of Progress
So this unmoderated flow of ideas... is that 4chan? You can "speak your mind" over there, but I have not heard of any useful ideas coming out of that.

Someone explain to me what the problem is. Is Joe from Baraboo, Wisconsin, not getting air time on primetime MSNBC? Is he being muzzled? What is the issue?

papito··on Supreme Court: Will Blocking on the SocialWeb Remain Legal for All in the USA?
You get one mailing address that is verifiably yours.

You get one phone number that is verifiably yours.

I can whip out my phone right now and create 1000 of fake me.

I know what you did there, but - no joy.

papito··on Are pull requests bad because they originate from open-source development?
"then your version control system is not going to fix that for you."

Uh... Pull requests are not a version control workflow - it's a human workflow. It's also a way for the team to actually LOOK at the code that is going in and to be aware of what changes are incoming.

I mean, that's just one point, there are so many ways in which this view is fatally flawed, I am not even going to... ugh.

I know this is not trolling, but this is so scandalous, it comes across that way. This is beyond a "hot take".

papito··on Supreme Court: Will Blocking on the SocialWeb Remain Legal for All in the USA?
I am not blocking a person, I am blocking a random handle on the Internet.
papito··on Supreme Court: Will Blocking on the SocialWeb Remain Legal for All in the USA?
Right. I can understand making it illegal to delete your posts as a public servant. That applies to YOU, but I don't see how not being able to block a troll in Portugal posing as someone else is helpful.

There is no standard for verification in social media.

papito··on Fox News Media and Tucker Carlson have agreed to part ways
He already has a standing offer from RT.

Russian prime time had Tucker's clips as a fixture.

papito··on Some mistakes I made as a new manager
This translates to other areas.

I am working on a new product, my idea and implementation from start to finish.

Yesterday I asked my spouse to use it and tell me what she thought. Anything she had an issue with, I was like a crab - just claw claw claw. One has to resist the impulse.

papito··on What’s the point of tech conferences?
To get out of the house. When I started in tech, I went to conferences in pretty much every job. It was a lot of fun - and these were boring "legacy" businesses.

I remember I went to an Adobe conference in Chicago years and years ago, and they were giving away free iPad v1's to all participants. We were just in awe of these, and Adobe pretty much sabotaged the whole conference because no one was listening to the speakers, we were all just heads down playing with these new tablet thingies (not all of us even had smartphones at the time).

Sometimes I would take two days off and book my return trip for later. You are already there and your flight is covered - just pay extra for the stay and do touristy things.

Also - you can learn things.

papito··on Twitter drops “Government-funded”/“state-affiliated“ from NPR, BBC, RT, Xinhua
It's not really "help". Musk is not an agent - he is a useful idiot. The goal of these "libertarians" is to subvert and sabotage democracy here at home. The way it is right now, the system is not working - they are not respected or loved enough. Therefore, the country is broken.
papito··on Twitter power users begin campaign to 'Block the Blue' paid checkmarks
2022: "How dare the Establishment receive these blue checkmarks!"

2023: "Hey, Establishment, you are going to get the blue checkmarks, and you are going to like it!"

papito··on Twitter claims that dead celebrities have subscribed to Twitter Blue
Just watching all this flailing is exhausting. Imagine working for that restless adderall monkey.
papito··on LeBron James didn’t pay for his Twitter checkmark but Elon gave it to him anyway
Try having a nazi-friendly product, or ANY product, and then put the Microsoft or the Oracle logo on your front page - "look, they are paying customers!"

Then wait for the lawyers to send you a terse email promising to basically end you.

papito··on LeBron James didn’t pay for his Twitter checkmark but Elon gave it to him anyway
Ah, of course, lol.
papito··on LeBron James didn’t pay for his Twitter checkmark but Elon gave it to him anyway
What did Elon think was going to happen? I mean, this guy has an impressive streak of making bad decisions and then digging a deeper hole.

You are going to pretend that famous people are paying for your product, they will call you out, and.... then what? You are going to call them filthy liars? Make an infantile joke and claim a win?

Forget 3 steps ahead - Elon Musk is struggling with computing immediate consequences within the next 24 hours.

papito··on Meta is about to start its next round of layoffs
You seem to be totally correct. Meta ticker is flat today.

In addition, there are other dynamics here. Meta is torching through cash building this Metaverse, and there is no clear horizon or plan. It's going to give a lot of investors pause before jumping in.

papito··on Meta is about to start its next round of layoffs
A team of 3 star engineers can take on the world. It's a killer setup.
