panny··on I used AWS cognito for a startup. I wouldn't do it again
Hey, I thought "rawdogging" sounded pretty authentic. Does claude say rawdogging now too?
panny··on Judge rules Trump administration’s blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal
Sure, but who in Trump's DOJ is going to prosecute Trump? Separation of powers my ass.
panny··on Data centers' 'oh s–t' moment
In every good market crash, there's a flash point. In 2008, it was the Lehman Bros collapse and congress refusing the initial bailout. This might be the flashpoint, 75 data centers blocked this year and a supermajority of Americans against their construction.
panny··on AI Agent Has Root
>That’s not hypothetical. That’s POSIX working exactly as designed.

I'm so tired of AI voice.

panny··on Astronomers discover a new type of astrophysical object: A black hole star
I'm pretty sure Soundgarden predicted this :)
panny··on Silicon Valley is in denial in face of widespread backlash
I'm puzzled how people who didn't care about Snowden are suddenly very upset about Flock. I'm glad they finally decided the 4A is important.
panny··on Suica, Japan's First IC Transit Card
Cringe. Cards are fun, collectable, and never run out of battery. Mine is a custom limited edition card from a Japanese chocolate factory.

panny··on What will be left for us to work on
> I argue that there will be plenty for us to work on, grounded in the “AI as normal technology” thesis

There is no doubt that AI is creating more work than it produces. Every single line it writes has to be reviewed by someone because AI cannot take responsibility. And it can spew out decades worth of written code every day. Every line is untrustworthy and must be manually verified.

The problem is I don't want to do this work. You don't either. Everyone I've seen using AI to write code does not do this work. Anyone who says they do this work is lying, to you or themselves or a little of both. People just YOLO and ship it.

If that is the only work left to do when using AI, I'll just do it the old way. If that's not good enough to stay employeed, then I'll just find a new career.

panny··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
What open medium would you suggest as an alternative to X?

I miss the days when we had an RFC, people got together, came up with a solution, and we ended up with decentralized NNTP or something. Everything is someone's little kingdom now.

panny··on Coconut oil jet fuel matches kerosene's efficiency in engine tests
Maybe it's time to stop burning food as fuel. What are the jets going to do anyway, bomb Iranian children?

Remember when George W Bush signed into law the corn ethanol bill. Corn tripled in price within 8 years. Fuel didn't get cheaper. In fact it cost more to produce the ethanol.

panny··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
>LLMs are causing slow, bloated, code are going to eat crow once they re-write everything in super-optimized assembly

LLMs have caused such an increase in ram prices that pine64 is no longer making linux machines. When you can't afford RAM, as a direct result of LLMs, it's going to make your assembly app slower too. Sorry, this is the future you chose.

panny··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Think for a moment. What is the difference between giving them a password which wipes the phone and giving them a password which opens a blank phone?

It's the same thing. They punched in a code, they are presented with a wiped phone. Can they prove the guy gave them a distress password and wasn't simply carrying a wiped phone to begin with? No, but they just need to imply that is the reason to charge him with the felony.

panny··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
I'm healthier than my neighbors. I carry 4-6 gallons of water a mile every couple of days on foot. I don't own a car either, I ride a bicycle. If my neighbors and I share medical costs, I'm definitely losing a lot there. My neighbors are obese. 40% of Americans are obese. 80% are overweight. Americans are not healthy in general. They don't even try. How is forcing me to participate in their healthcare a freedom?

The American healthcare system is fundamentally broken on top of this. How is forcing me to pay into a system that is broken and a system I won't use, how is that freedom? Americans spend more money than any other country only to recieve worse outcomes. You can walk into an American hospital, tell them you have just returned from west Africa where there is an Ebola outbreak, and tell the nurse you have Ebola symptoms, and that nurse will send you home with a perscription for antibiotics that don't work against viral infections at all. And then you die. I'm citing a real example that actually happened.

https://abcnews.com/news/story/ebola-patient-released-texas-...

Given the state of American healthcare, I wouldn't go to an American hospital even if near death. I'd try to get myself to a hospital in some other country before going to an American one.

panny··on When Postgres Isn't the Process That Kills Your Database
I was expecting to open the link and see clamav :) If you don't exclude the data dir from scanning, it will kill your database.
panny··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
>one of the biggest and simplest is getting commute time back

Zoom out. Being full remote means I don't even need a car. I can live in a walkable city with passenger rail in a low cost of living location. I can reduce my living expense to just food and utilities with a paid off house and no automobiles.

panny··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
Civic Hygiene is the opposite of how you were taught to write code...

>It should be noted that no ethically-trained software engineer would ever consent to write a DestroyBaghdad procedure. Basic professional ethics would instead require him to write a DestroyCity procedure, to which Baghdad could be given as a parameter.

panny··on Civic Hygiene – avoid building technologies that could be used by a police state (2013)
>you cannot ignore politics and just "focus on technology."

panny··on How do I permanently disable random Google Photos popup to backup photos? (2024)
My goal is to move to LineageOS by the end of the month since Google is being such an asshole about "sideloading" (installing) applications. Losing this antifeature will be a nice bonus.
panny··on Buyer cancels showing after Deflock shows two cameras utilized by the HOA
I know most of these flock cameras are going up in low income black neighborhoods [1] to "protect" them, but don't these wealthy neighborhoods need "protection" too?

panny··on AI Slop Is Real
Ironic that the article about AI slop reads like AI slop.
panny··on Why Young Men Are Abandoning the Workforce
Is the article really just two paragraphs?

panny··on Meta's new open-weight model targets local agentic AI
Didn't meta just announce to the world that its AI is prone to hack out of its container and attack other companies? Why would someone who doesn't understand the nuance be inclined to try this?
panny··on AI coding got faster. Why didn't engineering?
Because coding speed isn't the bottleneck. The real question here is if AI enables all these no-coderz to create applications, where are those? Aside from a few that got hacked the instant they were put into production, I haven't heard about those.
panny··on Japanese court overturns Red RAW video patent
Patents last at most 20 years. So the troll got 18 years out of it, and a great expense to the public and many companies involved fighting it. Trolls and lawyers win again. Everyone else loses.
panny··on Three Six Mafia – Data about "6/6/6 dating" (2024)
>I am curious why is height important?

Height coorelates with lots of things. Taller means longer feet. Taller people have larger heads as well. A large head means larger cranial capacity and therefore, likely higher IQ. Mostly, it's just our monkey brain which says taller is more formidible.

panny··on Why $100 in Your 20s is Worth $500 in Your 60s
The author has fallen into the money trap. Everyone, rich or poor gets basically the same amount of time. 80 years, give or take a few decades. The first few years are spent rather carelessly. By the time you're 40 you maybe have half a life left. Your time is worth more. You are the most capable you will ever be and you need to focus on what you really want to do in the life you have left. Say you live to be 89 and the Fed chairman decides to print up a billion dollars and drop it in your lap. What good does that really do you? When you are near the end of life, it really makes no difference anymore. That's when you look back and realize, you spent the majority of your life chasing money which doesn't really matter.

Everyone dies. You can't take it with you.

panny··on Three Six Mafia – Data about "6/6/6 dating" (2024)
These numbers seem based on global distributions rather than local ones. After all, six feet is just average height in the Netherlands.

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/average-h...

Maybe that's what the rule tells you. Ladies love the north Europeans.

panny··on Which web browser has no AI?
Falkon
panny··on AI in Linux
I'm ambivalent about the impact of AI on society with respect to Sashiko, but that is the weak argument to make against AI code review.

The strong argument to make is that AI code review sucks. It does a bad job. It denies there are bugs that you have personally verified exists, questions the reason for the patch existing based on this denial, and then demands you create a giant scaffolding of tests to prove to the AI that the bug exists and that your patch will fix it. It is rude to do that to someone contributing their free time to help your project. And yes, I have forked one project as a result of this already.

AI code review will atomize your community with great speed. Beware.

Try hitting https://old.reddit.com/ in an incognito window. I've been faced with this at least a week now. I just stopped reading subreddit content tho. I'm not creating an account, and new reddit is pretty awful.
