panda88888··on Apple Captures 75% of Global Handset Market Operating Profit in Q2 2021
Yes, I remember back then there was an article about Apple making more than 100% of the profits in the smartphone market, because most of other competitors are losing money trying to increase market share.

Edit: here it is

panda88888··on Every search bar looks like a URL bar to users
I wonder if these are attempts to drive up the “interest” metric, with the hypothesis that the more search for a specific string, the result that is exact match gets higher ranking?
panda88888··on Every search bar looks like a URL bar to users
Yup, the desktop metaphor. Basically the computer screen is like a desk, and each application is a paper/document on the desk that can lay on top of one another. Mouse cursor is more or less your finger/hand to interact with the “documents”.
panda88888··on U.S. sees biggest tax revenue surge in 44 years despite pandemic
Revenue. So before.

If you do not absolutely need an eink tablet, iPad Air with apple pencil is arguably a much more versatile alternative for a similar price.
panda88888··on NYT Rectracts Number of Children Hospitalized by Covid-19 (From 900K to 63K)
I confirmed via CDC website that total hospitalization for ages 0-17 in the US is indeed 63k from Aug 2020 to present (https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#new-hospital-admis...).

It is difficult for me to not feel that there was intent to mislead with the 900k number, especially from a NYT reporter who should know better to check the sources and verify the numbers. The data isn’t hidden away or needed any tallying—-it is literally there on CDC’s website. It is incidents like this that erodes public’s trust in mainstream media and paints them as having “agendas”. I truly hope the NYT takes this seriously and do a better job at checking the numbers.

Note: I haven’t checked, but I wonder if the 900k number is for global children hospitalizations. Although IMO that number would be difficult to get accurately.

Are there other reporting on this story? I read about halfway through and it is just unreal.
panda88888··on How percentile approximation works and why it's more useful than averages
Yes. The goal is to find (or approximate) the median without storing all the elements. Instead, it approximates the median by finding the median of randomly selected samples from the elements.
panda88888··on Google illegally underpaid thousands of workers
One mechanism is to fine the CEOs in units of time rather than dollar. For example, the punishment can include 18 hour compulsory training for the Cxx executives that they have to attend in person over 3 days (6hr per day) so that they understand how to comply with the regulations.

panda88888··on Allbirds S-1 IPO
I haven’t looked at the filing in detail yet, but I would guess expanding their physical store footprint is burning money and the source of loss. They are in the expansion/growth phase so I would not expect profitability until either runway runs out or growth slows.
panda88888··on Microsoft warns thousands of cloud customers of exposed databases
Oh yes, I forgot about that important detail. MS was able to buy at a greatly discounted price due to that.
panda88888··on Microsoft warns thousands of cloud customers of exposed databases
He probably is jokingly referring to the Nokia acquisition, which at that time is ran by an ex-Microsoft executive, whom rejoins Microsoft after the acquisition.

panda88888··on Apple’s new abuse prevention system: an antritust/competition point of view
For me the biggest concern is not that Apple is scanning the images for $BAD_STUFF but rather, now that the scanning occurs on my device instead of Apple cloud servers. The trust has been eroded. I can understand Apple scanning images on their servers (although I don’t think Apple should). However, running the scan on device is taking it too far, even if the assertion is that only images that would be eventually uploaded is scanned. Apple promised security and privacy on their devices, and this breaks the trust. Now I question their future software roadmap, such as:

1. Will the scanning come to MacOS? 2. Will the scanning start to include additional $BAD_STUFF, such as political censoring and/or even other files (video, document, etc.)

I really like Apple hardware. The iPads and the M1 Macs are awesome, but this news makes me hesitant to stay in the Apple ecosystem and will be looking at alternatives. I already run Linux desktops, and I’ll probably move to Linux on laptop.

panda88888··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
SAT test prep doesn’t have to cost thousands. A prep book, a timer/clock, and time reading through the tricks and taking practice test(s) would be at least 70% there if not more.
panda88888··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
IMO essay is easier games than the SAT. There is no guarantee on how much essay is actually written by the student compared to SAT, where it actually checks the ID. If anything, if I have the means I would have consultants work with my kid on choosing a topic, then heavily edited for impact while retaining the student’s writing style.
panda88888··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
Coaching and tutoring has diminishing returns. Simply having done the practice test before the actual one would both significantly boost the score while reducing the anxiety. The tricks are not hard to learn, and practice tests are cheap to buy (or borrow from library). SAT is (was) probably the cheapest way to boost admission chance for a poor student compared to extracurricular, competitions, volunteering, etc. Those with money always have an advantage, but standardized test like SAT is probably the most egalitarian, as everyone has to take the tests by themselves in a controlled environment.
panda88888··on Why is the university of California dropping the SAT?
I personally feel that colleges are dropping the SAT and ACT because those scores show correlation between race and higher/lower admission criteria in the admitted student body. See the Harvard lawsuit. Without the scores it is easier for colleges to shape the incoming student population to better approximate the desired demographic distribution.
