paiute··on No code reviews by default
I prefer a top down where project leads are responsible for code, I.e. they review all code and they are simultaneously responsible for getting things done. It forces balance. I will let juniors make a mess in certain areas and not others. Sometimes you even let bugs in if you know a specific test will fail so people are more careful and don't depend on reviews too much. If you are a bad lead and nitpick every little thing, then you get to explain why your project isn't ready. Honestly getting devs to git add -p and look over their own pr catches much of it.

I still miss my mercury filled thermostat. None of this constant on/off from the digital contraption.
paiute··on Goodbye, Clean Code (2020)
"let it go"! Everyone senior, lead, etc needs to understand this if they want a productive team.
paiute··on L-Arginine potentiates radiation therapy for cancer
anyone else on here with mixed connective tissue disease? This stuff is magic.
paiute··on The popularity of e-bikes isn’t slowing down
This is a good example of how we get bad laws... Should overweight cyclists be forced to have a lower speed? I can still get my ebike to 25 mph down hill, I would never dream of passing a pedestrian at that speed. I picked 24.5 for a reason and not 25 BTW.
paiute··on The popularity of e-bikes isn’t slowing down
only because we have brain dead laws on e bikes. why not 24.5 mph? I see actual electric motorcycles on our bike paths all the time, I have never seen them cause a real problem. People on normal bikes cause all the problems because they have so much invested in their current speed.
paiute··on The popularity of e-bikes isn’t slowing down
I love mine, I think it opens up some opportunities to work on relations with cars and pedestrians. I feel less in the way when I can maintain a better speed up hill. and on trails it's not a burden to slow down when passing pedestrians on foot. Nothing is worse than a bike whizzing by when you don't expect it. I just wish they'd remove those stupid speed limiters.
paiute··on A function decorator that rewrites the bytecode to enable goto in Python
I've been using nuitka. but really it should be part of the language by now.
paiute··on A function decorator that rewrites the bytecode to enable goto in Python
yes they can be used for evil but how are exceptions different?
paiute··on A function decorator that rewrites the bytecode to enable goto in Python
yes! goto is one of the 2 things python got wrong. The other is the ability to deliver end user executables.
paiute··on Nuitka: An extremely compatible Python compiler
it has an option to build with libpython. so your comment is incorrect.

people forget that we tried this and it didn't really work out that well. gang of four is only mildly useful.

paiute··on Bring back menus, QR codes are terrible
this whole pandemic thing really worried me. I leave my phone at home on purpose all the time. I really struggled with everything from food to doctors. phones are becoming a requirement.
paiute··on Code is Engineering, Types are Science
I love your comment. I'm the complete opposite of you I thought python was stupid when I was younger and thought c++ was awesome and things should be well typed. now I'm crotchety and avoid typed languages. all you need is data and functions - I know not everyone thinks this way.
paiute··on Code is Engineering, Types are Science
I have used it and don't care for it
paiute··on Code is Engineering, Types are Science
have you ever seen a Java app log? you still got to check and handle on public facing functions.
paiute··on Code is Engineering, Types are Science
I've seen it go both ways for various reasons. typically nothing to do with types.
paiute··on Code is Engineering, Types are Science
I'm increasingly frustrated by industry trends of more types. After 20 years I like typing less and less. Even with c++ code bases tend toward various methods of eliminating strong typing. Javascript didn't need types. pythons type hint are close to ideal, but anything other than primitive almost isn't worth adding type hints. who doesn't just toss args in a dict?
paiute··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
try living in one. they are great maybe from age 24-29. they typically cost more than a mortgage in my area. you don't talk to people when you are that close. I find the greater the distance between neighbors the better the relationship.
paiute··on It's probably time to stop recommending Clean Code (2020)

paiute··on Technical Debt: Why it'll ruin your software
“There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies. The first method is far more difficult.” ― C. A. R. Hoare

This is how I approach software, but there are so many people out there who won't approve simple code, because it doesn't have enough configs, or classes, or whatever. It seems that the person who wants the most over-engineered code tends to get their way. Psychologically the absence of 'things' is always inferior and harder to argue for than having more 'things'.

paiute··on Brown M&Ms, or Why No One Reads the Manual
But why are your instructions in the back closet when they could be taped directly to the code in the readme or in the comments and error messages? I've had similar phone calls, to which I respond "it's all in the README." Never heard from them again.

The U.S. Government does not have police contracts with schools. Police are state, county, or local. The last few weeks have made it clear to me very few people understand our system of gov.
