Are you assuming good faith?
(By the way, this is part of the reason Tesla owners get called Elon-worshipers: we see the sentiment in places like this, it doesn’t line up with the reality we’re seeing every day, and trying to correct the discrepancy comes across as worship. It’s not, it’s just that it seems like something other than truth is driving these conversations.)
Twenty years ago, that was sci-fi. HN would have been able to reason clearly about it twenty years ago.
(Yes, I know HN wasn’t around in 2004. You don’t need to nitpick that)
Yes, it has problems. Yes, it has regressions. Yes, sometimes it does dangerous things. But it drove me 400 miles, door to door, last week and did fine. There’s clearly something historic happening here, but all HN can talk about is flaws.
If someone developed a warp drive, and 25% of the time it turned the operator into jelly, we wouldn’t sit here talking exclusively about jelly. We’d talk about how warp drive is cool and what the path to fixing stuff is.
It’s really bizarre.
Yeah, yesterday I media-consumptioned up a whole new feature for a multi-million dollar web app on my media-consumption appliance.
You can make whatever point you're trying to make without saying things that are outright false. That tends to make people disregard the other things you say.
This is clearly willful incompetence.
Pretty sure that's not what that says.
Very early in 2017, Trump sent a bunch of missiles into Syria (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Shayrat_missile_strike) after they behaved badly. It seemed to have a chilling effect on the whole region for most of his presidency. Much less insanity happened for the following four years than normal.
Datasheets say they’re 21x51mm. Looks like they’re on the order of 5mm deep. So 5.35mL per Pico.
Four million of these would be 5659 gallons of Picos, 756 cubic feet.
So you could take the e-waste of every Pico sold to date, and put it in a single 9.1ft cube in your garage.
I’d argue that this doesn’t qualify as something we shouldn’t spend time worrying about. There’s probably at least one Pico, maybe running a sign at some EPA office, doing more good for the environment than all the waste from all of them together is causing harm.
1. Everyone will yell that FSD did this, ignoring that FSD doesn’t exist on these trucks yet.
2. Everyone will yell that it was a stuck accelerator pedal, or some other form of uncommanded acceleration.
3. People will forget about it
4. Evidence will emerge that this was just a dude going about 100mph, drunk, and slammed his car into a culvert at 1:45am on a Sunday night.
5. No one will report the new evidence.
This stuff is so predictable.
Aaaand time to stop reading, this is not notable.
Regardless of what you think about him, he’s good at something. It’s not grifting; there are plenty of people good at that who couldn’t possibly hit this level of success.

The US is the only first world country with demographic numbers that look not-apocalyptic.
Maybe we could see a thing where to purchase something in those categories, you have to call them and verify your identity, and that you’re buying this thing, and that you aren’t allowed to submit a chargeback.
But probably the volume isn’t worth it.
Unless VW lets you engage cruise control when you’re very slow?
Top off your tank if it makes you feel better, but realistically no one there is getting paid enough to cross reference gas buyers with poopers.
Well, which candidate is more likely to push back on those rules? The US has plenty of ways to put pressure on foreign law; the current admin just hasn’t been doing it.
This is an accurate representation of most people’s relationship with technology. Not the average HN reader, but we are not the majority of the market.
