ozymandias8··on Thin desires are eating life
I would watch YouTube for an hour before bed. It got to the point where I needed it to fall asleep, usually with it playing in the background.

Replaced it with reading books and now I just read until I'm sleep enough, usually when I realize I have to reread sentences repeatedly.

After about a week I had no desire to scroll my YouTube feed for videos. I didn't block YouTube or anything, I still watch videos from creators I follow, but I no longer instinctively reach for it to pass time.

> The number of people who simply cannot or will not write a coherent paragraph is way too high. We have people in top professional positions that are functionally illiterate.

I feel this deeply in my day-to-day at a mid size public tech company.

But how do you turn this into an advantage when your audience (colleagues and leadership) are either functionally illiterate as you describe, or simply refuse to read?

> My best advice to a hiring manager is to check the reviews written by your future hires, you will have direct visibility into how they will perform in your organization and how toxic or emphatic they will be.

Brilliant. Have any hiring managers done this and uncovered red flags?

Sense of discovery and exploration, the interaction between different game mechanics, and the way the game teaches you how to do things while still making the puzzles feel gratifying to solve. Atmosphere is so strong. The visuals, sound, and art design all come together really well.

There's really a lot to like here. Whether or not it's worth the hype is a different question, but I'm very impressed at this game especially considering it's a 1 person dev team.

Brits use “taking _the_ piss”. But they also use “pissed” to mean drunk.
ozymandias8··on Twitch layoffs: Amazon-owned livestreaming platform cutting workforce by 35%
Some business that have spending limits like professional football clubs use amortization to make their spending look lower than it is.

They can amortize the cost of new players over the length of that player's contract while accounting player sales as instant profits.

ozymandias8··on Show HN: I made a website that color-codes the world by language
The problem with using official languages and only going country-level is it excludes minority languages that still have tens of millions of speakers across multiple countries.
ozymandias8··on News is bad for you – and giving up reading it will make you happier (2013)
I'm not saying this is your intent, but it is a pretty privileged and insular take.

If new events or a new policy change unfairly affects a (neighbor|friend|minority group|stranger), is it a good thing for the unaffected to plug their ears and go about life?

I don't mean to suggest following the news 24/7 is a solution to this, but I also do not see how it's healthy for every person to ignore everything that doesn't personally affect them.

ozymandias8··on How to painlessly migrate you and us from Reddit
I don't inherently disagree. However I do think that the quiet time provides a great space to reflect on things. But alas, I'm a hypocrite in this sense as I can't even walk my dog without feeling the urge to put on a podcast.
