oxff··on WebAssembly: Docker Without Containers
Docker doesn't even .. really fix the issue it claims / is-used-for. I think nix does that, but it's pure pain to use. But it does actually address IME the repro issues.
oxff··on Ask HN: How do people find your blog?
Hopefully they don't, good things must be hidden in this era of ours.
oxff··on Show HN: A highly opinionated, fully functional Obsidian vault
I have to say that there is a strong ngmi energy in this kind of obsession.
oxff··on Amazon agrees deal with Games Workshop to create Warhammer TV series
Considering what they did to LOTR .. lmao, lol.
oxff··on SvelteKit 1.0
I really don't know, that's why I asked.
oxff··on SvelteKit 1.0
Why is there a new frontend-whatever-work / tool every week? Database stuff is fairly stable, so is backend stuff. Browser APIs seem stable to me too? Why can't you guys decide that this is how things are best done
oxff··on Is Europe just not good at innovating?
We get taxed at 60%+ rates, have no energy and got trench warfare like it is the 1918. There's not much room for "innovation" in this hole.
oxff··on Tips for analyzing logs
Just use structured logs, its 2022 ffs.
oxff··on Beyond Functional Programming: The Verse Programming Language [pdf]
Seems like a bonkers meme language.
oxff··on Ask HN: Should HN ban ChatGPT/generated responses?
This is ultimately arbitrary restriction, as most can't tell if it is modal consciousness behind the response or CGPT; that is, why on earth would you not just ban the people who contribute nothing but CGPT-tier responses too?
oxff··on Ask HN: What are some of the best podcasts for developers?
Nothing beats the Jane Street one for programming / engineering. Some of them could be introductory lectures to a subject.
oxff··on Ask HN: How do you planify your sport sessions?
I think you just need a person with actual executive function to order the people to arrive to a given location at a given time once he hashes out the details. That is, I think your first ideal point is wrong. If these are 4 busy people their executive function might literally be gone after work week. They can only think in potato.
oxff··on Ask HN: Will AI put programmers our of work?
(i) AI does not exist

(ii) already you can automate low hanging fruit with python + excel but its not done

It will increase their demand, if anything.

oxff··on Asia’s advanced economies now have lower birth rates than Japan
First developed country to enact anti anti-natalist policies (restricting birth control, strengthening marriage etc) to win; or you could just drive off the fertility cliff like lemmings with females all working or in edu until 45+.
oxff··on EU-wide maximum limit of €10K for cash payments
Nothing to do with "fighting corruption" (or else a literal convicted felon wouldn't be head of ECB, - lol, lmao even) they just want to monitor you more.
oxff··on Programming Languages: Application and Interpretation, 3rd Ed
I went through the previous version with Rust. It is almost entirely language agnostic. It could be in sign language.
oxff··on Data-driven performance optimization with Rust and Miri
https://fasterthanli.me/articles/when-rustc-explodes & https://fasterthanli.me/articles/why-is-my-rust-build-so-slo...

these two articles also showcase how to use chrome for this

oxff··on Russia’s apparent resilience is being kept up by policy tricks and cash
Do not ever forget what was promised: Russia in rubble in two weeks from sanctions and Russia out of missiles in two weeks. This was the "negotiated" social contract upon which quality of life in other parts of Europe was thrown into a dog shit trash fire. These kinds of articles are just not-so subtle cover for the once again failure of leaders here, and moving the goalposts and rewriting of history.
oxff··on Facebook tracking is illegal in Europe
Why is there a random picture of a dude in the article
oxff··on How not to suck at interviewing candidates
0 hits for "relax" as in, make the both of you relax.
oxff··on Vivaldi integrates Mastodon in its desktop browser
I use Vivaldi because it simply has more the features in a better package than these open source browsers. Maybe some day Firefox stops fucking around with and just starts stealing UX features from Edge and Vivaldi so I come back, but for now I can't start using it.
oxff··on The cloudy layers of modern-day programming
> then ask yourself - what have you done in order to have interesting job, projects, challenges, etc?

This thousand times for all the whiners. Learn an esoteric skill, get hired for esoteric job.

oxff··on Ask HN: Software architects – what’s your typical day look like?
Feed stuff to chatgpt, feed it to build pipeline
oxff··on Ask HN: What happens when AI starts eating it's own dog food?
We're gonna accelerate that is for sure. The optimistic case is that we will actually understand language at the end of this, and end the dark age caused by the printing press, and come to understand what consciousness is (it is actually not what these things are displaying, people need to read "Interface Theory of Perception" for what's happening).

The pessimistic case is just more confusion!

oxff··on Ask HN: What happens when AI starts eating it's own dog food?
It has ever since the original PageRank started the first feedback loop. The last fully human content was mined by it in 1998.
oxff··on Ask HN: Image attribution and stable diffusion
Legal and ethical concerns will be subordinate to technological advances, so they are largely things of no worry.

As for your question, just replace the machine learning algorithm with a human in the loop and ask yourself the same question, and you got your answer according to our norms as is.

oxff··on Is it worth writing about?
(Not having read the article) the main purpose for me, to write publicly in something like a personal blog, would be to keep myself honest and place the writing under review / critique so I could learn from people who know more.
oxff··on Ask HN: Best books read in 2022?
A German Officer in Occupied Paris: The War Journals, 1941-1945.
oxff··on Using Rust at a startup: A cautionary tale
The author equates C++, Go, Python, Java as languages. I think there might have been some other things wrong than the language here.
oxff··on Ask HN: What platform/tool do you use for software documentation?
If this is for software developers, Notion also belongs to trash. It is slow to use, you need to click for everything etc.

The best documentation is straight in the code file: module documentation at top, then method documentation for each method with a simple example / doc test showing what is the input-output relationship, the second best is an .md file in same repo etc. the more friction you add the worse you make this process for software developers (Jira / Confluence as the king dog shit of documentation process - these are not for developers these are for people who need job security).
