oxff··on Changes after 1 year of quitting Instagram
I do not understand the brain that can get addicted to social media. As in, I can't really model it, simulate it.

I can understand like a physical addiction to drugs, since they alter body chemistry. But what's up behind social media addiction?

oxff··on Ask HN: How do you organize or rename PDF files (books, papers, etc)?
Zotero is quite possibly the LEAST WORST solution I've found.
oxff··on Ask HN: Why are bookmarks second class citizens in browsers?
Beats me. Browsers should have something like Zotero directly built into them.
oxff··on Blitz.js – Fullstack Toolkit for Next.js
No wonder all the web guys are abusing amphetamine with higher dose than soldiers in WW2.
oxff··on Rust 1.63
I wish they'd break their current backwards compat. promises to fix some accidental complexity that has been introduced. Let legacy langs provide this kind of maintainability
oxff··on Rust 1.63
Maybe the package managers for Linux distributions need to rethink their package distribution model :)
oxff··on Ask HN: Where may I get the opinions of Rust programmers?
/r/rust over at reddit
oxff··on Astro 1.0 – a web framework for building fast, content-focused websites
Why does it feel like there are million solutions and wheel reinventions like this. Why can't they converge on 1-2 solutions?
oxff··on Ask HN: Best books to build up entrepreneurial mindset?
> book

This is one of those things where you actually have to Do It instead of Read Theory.

oxff··on The “bicameral mind” 30 years on (2007)
It might not be true but that doesn't stop me from applying it to myself and go into third-person mode
oxff··on Our Roadmap for Nix
> more like I am reverse engineering something rather than using it

Perfect description.

oxff··on Our Roadmap for Nix
> we see that nearly all of our clients that are using Nix are, at best, annoyed by the accidental complexity that comes with it

That is because it is an exemplary in accidental complexity at least from a user point of view. I cannot in good faith introduce it to an organization as it is way too complex to use / configure, only thing with worse documentation I've seen was PHP (this in itself a big red flag).

oxff··on Ask HN: What are the ways you go about getting comfortable with a new codebase?
(This might be more abstract than you wanted)

Hopefully there's an overview of the code base in an `ARCHITECTURE.md` file[1], and then read through it, and the respective documentation and tests for the main modules mentioned in it.

If you assume their tests cover the important business logic / stuff "they want to keep" (ref. "Beyonce Rule"[2]), they should inform you about the most important stuff.

oxff··on Counterargument: Experts doubt China is gearing up to invade Taiwan
Counterargument: where has `trusting experts` led you in the past 10 years
oxff··on Ask HN: Is my software stack choice sound?
You need to consider the maintenance / upgrade / patching (bug fixes etc.) burden too. For "fire and forget" projects you put to Heroku and forget about, almost any meme stack will do. For projects where you think you'll be maintaining it for 1-10 years, you have to be bit smarter.
oxff··on Ask HN: How do you successfully nitpick during a code review?
I don't really understand how style can be an issue, doesn't the linter / formatter catch like majority of issues or can you not configure one for your project?
oxff··on I still love PHP and JavaScript
PHP documentation is one of the worst things I've ever seen. That people subject themselves to abuse such as "reading it" is comical to me. Enjoy scrolling down 15 years of comments to get the quick rundown.
oxff··on I still love PHP and JavaScript
People positing either of the languages as "good for most use cases" have a Stockholm syndrome.
oxff··on China's Final Warning
It took Russia some 8 years from Crimea to conclude that it was impossible to practice diplomacy with US, and to invade rest of Ukraine.

People are maybe bit too fast to laugh at China in this case.

oxff··on Why study functional programming? (2012)
> Objects are excellent for data

They are not. If your data is in objects, you have already demoted data as a first class member of your language (ie. Java)

oxff··on Ask HN: Meal Planning App?
RP Diet App
oxff··on Use Flake.nix, Not Dockerfile
Docker has documentation and user interface that is at least several orders of magnitude clearer, and it is much faster and easier to learn (no obtuse, undocumented, unique syntax) and is generally well-integrated (that is, people don't get confused when a repository has Dockerfile, they know what to do with it)
oxff··on Thoughts on static linking in Rust and how it affects distro maintainers
They (distro maintainers) just assume things work like they've always worked in their C-land, and that that is the model now and forever. Well, too bad.
oxff··on Carbon’s most exciting feature is its calling convention
Rust seems to have failed to be a drop-in replacement for C++.
oxff··on EU proposal to combat child sexual abuse online presents serious risks
Why do they never go after sites like Pornhub, Onlyfans and their owners, curious.
oxff··on Phrases in computing that might need retiring
This is the fruitful definition of OOP to me. None of that Java Corporate insanity
oxff··on Phrases in computing that might need retiring
I love how the well-defined starts with a definition I've never heard for OOP.
oxff··on Phrases in computing that might need retiring
Hard agree.
oxff··on Recession
> This article may be affected by a current event

It is affected by the current event which according to the symbolic manipulators isn't even happening.

oxff··on Is High Quality Software Worth the Cost?
Without reading the article, likely not as software engineering is business activity and most software isn't high quality.
