owenjones··on Migrating a large JavaScript project from DOM spaghetti to Backbone.js
Agreed. Even as someone who feels pretty comfortable in Backbone this was a good exploration.
owenjones··on Ripe for Disruption
Hard to hear the message over all the brogrammin' going down.
owenjones··on 100,000 stars
Same, on a Mac Mini.
owenjones··on An Analysis of Market Demand for Web Programming Languages (October 2012)
I see you have 'closure' listed under client side languages, are you referring to Clojure?

In which case it is most definitely server-side, unless you meant Clojurescript?

owenjones··on Git add -p: a powerful git feature
I Always use -p.

I can't count the number of times I've caught stuff that wasn't supposed to be committed.

Also, site isn't loading for me so maybe this is discussed, but I also like using it to not commit logging / debugging statements without removing or stashing them.

owenjones··on BootMetro: Metro style web framework
I don't understand the "concept" of The Windows 8 UI (not Metro) Maybe it's just because I'm used to the skeuomorphism of icons and folders. The tiles Windows 8 UI (I just like typing that long unwieldy phrase) to me are in the awkward position of taking up MUCH more screen real estate than a simple icon, while not being able to convey much more information.

Am I missing something?

owenjones··on Dropbox Please Hire Jenny Shen
Hmm, how so?
owenjones··on The Ultimate Vim Distribution
You can update your bundles straight from the command line with:

vim +BundleInstall! +qall

Vim still opens but could be useful if you're trying to automate vim somehow.

owenjones··on How Accurate is Apple Maps in Canada's Largest Province?
So all it takes to declare the "Most Profitable Company in the World" deteriorating and coming to an end is some hiccups with a fairly new product?

I agree, this is fast, but not in the way you mean.

owenjones··on Could A Lunar Supercomputer Work?
Also the concept of using THE MOON as a glorified shipping container data center warehouse makes me a little sad.
owenjones··on Self-Taught Developers: Are You Missing Your Foundation?
In this context self-taught obviously means: didn't pursue computers in secondary education. I've learned way more about development post college, but I wouldn't call myself "self taught."
owenjones··on Give people an iPhone 4S, tell them it's an iPhone 5
I showed my sister my 4S recently, she was thinking of upgrading, and she was amazed at my lack of case.

"How do you protect it from scratches?" she asked, to which I replied "I don't drop it."

I can't really comprehend dropping this thing, it costs $4-500! That's a lot of money! I can't imagine not handling things that cost that much without the utmost of care.

owenjones··on Who’s buying the Nano? Why is Apple is still selling them?
The nano has a spring loaded clip on the back so you don't drop it.

The nano is for listening to music while exercising.

Although I just checked the product announcement, it appears they removed the clip! Probably want you to buy some armband or clip sold separately now.

owenjones··on Google Glasses Make Their Questionable Debut at (New York Fashion Week)
Maybe I'm not remembering correctly but wasn't the iPod the first MP3 player to combine a disk harddrive with flash memory? Thereby allowing it to store gigs of music when the rest were touting 64 - 128 MBs of storage?

Seems like a pretty big deal to me.

owenjones··on Abandoning VIM
What features "missing" from vim caused you to switch? With nerd-tree and fuzzy filename searching, ctrl-p or Command-T (I'm on MacVim,) ack, VimClojure for the repl, minibufexplorer and the rest of the Janus bundle for autocomplete / syntax highlighting I have everything I need.
owenjones··on Jiro's Dream
Ebert's comments were a surprise? One of the major themes of the movie is the incredible cost of perfection/mastery. Everyone wants to be the best at something, but so very few are willing to give everything to perfect their craft.
owenjones··on Textmate2 Goes Open Source
Alright I suppose so. I've also switched to Vim a while back and yeah totally got my money's worth from TM1.
owenjones··on Textmate2 Goes Open Source
Is it wrong of me to be a little miffed that I paid $50, admittedly a long time ago, for Textmate?
owenjones··on You Are Using Your Editor Wrong
I'm curious what the accomplishment would be?

I use a bunch of plugins, they help me be more productive...

owenjones··on Craigslist now asks for exclusive license when posting
To me, the word community connotes a separate entity that you interact with in some way, usually due to proximity. You might define the Craigslist Community as only people visiting craiglist.com but to me it would imply sites such as Padmapper that extend and improve Craigslist data. They are symbiotic and support the same community of users, Padmapper is not "repackaging" Craigslist like some sort of parasite like you imply.

Anecdotally, whenever I've used Padmapper to find a new apartment I would end up on craiglist.com anyway as Padmapper would often not contain the real estate agent's contact information.

owenjones··on Gunsmith Uses 3D Printer To Make A Rifle
The infantile level of discourse surrounding gun laws saddens and disgusts me. And no, I don't believe either the military or the police are corrupt. I think that is a pretty anecdotal remark.
owenjones··on All your Flickr photos in Dropbox, with style
Hmm, I skipped linking my account to S3 or Dropbox during setup assuming I would have an option to later store my pictures there. Am I out of luck?
owenjones··on All your Flickr photos in Dropbox, with style
Thanks!

I was also planning on exporting photos to S3. It's like you read my mind...

owenjones··on All your Flickr photos in Dropbox, with style
Ha! I was planning on writing a Flickr photo "liberator" this weekend after I recently learned there is no way to download all my original photos in bulk, even as a Pro user.

Signed up for a beta invite, hopefully now I don't have to.

owenjones··on Ctrl-P for Vim: Pure Vimscript Command-T
Awesome to not have to compile this with (SYSTEM!) ruby.
owenjones··on Why I Pirate - An Open Letter To Content Creators
As one of the people who intrinsically disagree with your stance and so skipped to the Closing section, it appears that your only argument for me is "Piracy is OK because these companies are still profitable"

?

owenjones··on The evil unit test.
The title and content don't correlate. This would be like having an article titled "The Evil Hammer" and then in the article explaining how "Hammer's aren't actually evil, just you shouldn't use them in situations where a saw would be more appropriate."

I think anyone falling into these pitfalls just aren't writing good enough tests, don't dissuade them from furthering their testing skills, promote skillful testing. And change the title.

owenjones··on Things I Hate About Object-Oriented Programming
Tired of incendiary, link baiting articles like these. They all follow the same pattern: Why I hate (Ruby, Rails, OOP, Functional Programming, Programming Quizzes in Interviews, Startups, Enterprises, Google, Apple, Microsoft, whatever) and then the article never impresses.

I still feel compelled to click due to the headline though, so props for that.

owenjones··on Beta Test: New York Startups Think Occupy Wall Street Has a Bad Pitch
I gagged at the "subscription-based site for fashion essentials" part.
owenjones··on Foundation: HTML/CSS boilerplate that responds to changing screen dimensions
That's exactly what I thought. Anyone with more knowledge care to compare / contrast this and Skeleton?
