outsomnia··on The Free Software Foundation is dying
If there was a replacement RMS, they too would have to say no on points of principle to things, make enemies of people who want them to say yes, be whispered against, be unpopular.

That's what the role is, say what nobody else will say, make people uncomfortable when apathy is comfortable, and when nobody else will act, take action and rally others against things that are bad. It's not a role that will inspire universal love whomever takes it.

If instead FSF stops with that and tries not to upset anyone it will be dead, not just in decline.

outsomnia··on Calling all open source maintainers
You're invited to perform in The Man's space, under The Man's eyes for The Man's favor, for free.

Meanwhile The Man's using your code to make money replacing you.

outsomnia··on A misleading open letter about sci-fi AI dangers ignores the real risks
No, because they will need it to train their AIs for free.
outsomnia··on Windows needs to stop showing tabloid news
What's this year's lock-in / excuse... games?
outsomnia··on What is mini FM
> The service area of Mini FM is very limited only in 100-500 meter radius.

Post-Covid, work from home, internet deliveries the trend is arguably things have to distribute to people now rather than people distribute to things.

FM radios have all but gone from modern cellphones and vanishingly few people are carrying around discrete ones. BT serves this physically local radio purpose now and is pretty much everyone has it on their person.

So it might have had a past but it doesn't seem to have a future.

outsomnia··on Ask HN: Are you a “lifer”? If so why?
There are reasons they have to offer the huge TC, you will be doing things that are not in your interest for it.
outsomnia··on Ask HN: (Solved) We are sorry, but you do not have access to Gmail
You're right, but the fastest way to do that is regain his email and do the lost password flow.

It sounds from other posts changing his gmail away from "essentials" will let him solve that and then his domain.

outsomnia··on Qualcomm says ARM to prohibit proximity of CPU and 3rd-party modules in one chip
Aren't they saying it has to be on a different chiplet? It's not like they can't have them "on the same laptop", AFAIk they're on separate chiplets or even chips today.
outsomnia··on Qualcomm says ARM to prohibit proximity of CPU and 3rd-party modules in one chip
https://www.semianalysis.com/p/arm-changes-business-model-oe...

Qualcomm have been involved in many IP right bustups over the years

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qualcomm#Patents_and_patent_di...

I wonder if they will find that doesn't help them argue against getting some of their own medicine.

outsomnia··on I've said it all before but here we go again
Science and everything else humans do is social and cliquey.

There's nothing that brings a group with some power over others together more than being able to agree that someone outside the group should be sidelined or punished.

outsomnia··on Ask HN: How to do the bare minimum when not valued at work?
Right... another way to look at this response is it's really passive-aggressively hoping they figure out they are wrong; it's still looking for their approval.

If you are truly dependent on specifically them, eg for visa reasons, that can only lead to a "partially managed decline".

If not, it's better to make your own decision to switch tracks in a controlled way and leave their bullshit and your need to care at all about it behind. You only have so many days on the planet, you will regret wasting them with people that make you feel like this.

outsomnia··on Some things to learn from the British East India Company's growth and demise
> latency being so low

... the author means that the latency between the UK and the remote offices was HIGH.

outsomnia··on Is there hope for Linux on smartphones? [video]
Gnome 3 on a phone is actually quite nice.
outsomnia··on The case against a C alternative
There is also a more general "case against the self-indulgent narcissism in creating a new language". There are an insane number of languages with the longevity of a mushroom mentioned on HN.
outsomnia··on Ask HN: My website just disappeared from DNS. What can I do?
whois says

Name Server: NS-CLOUD-D1.GOOGLEDOMAINS.COM ... Domain Status: serverHold https://icann.org/epp#serverHold

"If you provided delegation information (name servers), this status may indicate an issue with your domain that needs resolution. If so, you should contact your registrar to request more information. If your domain does not have any issues, but you need it to resolve in the DNS, you must first contact your registrar in order to provide the necessary delegation information."

outsomnia··on The stock market is a machine for creating cults
"Agree or leave" is how those companies represent themselves to their employees, and their customers too.

OP seems to be partway through some scales-falling-from-eyes event.

outsomnia··on Talking about layoffs
That's an unexpectedly kind and honest article... I should imagine there are people who needed to read that today and it has helped them.
outsomnia··on What one executive wishes they could tell employees about return-to-office plans
That awkward feeling is the employees being aware that the motivation of the people paying them and their own interests are in opposition.

In this business, in code and in management, Async is god. If it can be done async, it will be better done async plus or minus the social considerations.

outsomnia··on Ask HN: First-time dad-to-be. What do you wish you'd known back then?
Your partner is going to need support even if she isn't pushing for it and all seems well, if she's up all night at intervals feeding but you're sleeping well, eventually it becomes irritating. Be willing to do expressed milk or formula feeds in the night, deal with nappies / diapers willingly, make some time off for her by taking the baby out for long walks or car trips when it won't fall asleep etc.

It varies but doesn't be surprised if you don't really feel much about the new arrival until after a few months when it becomes clear there is actually a person in there. It doesn't mean there's something wrong with you.

outsomnia··on GitHub Copilot is not infringing your copyright
> But the unpleasant side effect of such an extension of copyright would be that all other AI-generated content would henceforth also be protected by copyright.

Proprietary companies are going to lean on copilot and stick "All rights reserved" on the results. Copilot creates this "unpleasant ... extension of copyright".

The author is not in a position to call whether Github infringes anyone's copyright or creates derivative works, the courts will do it perhaps differently in different juristictions.

outsomnia··on Mozilla and Google Objections Overruled on “Decentralized Identifiers” by W3C
Baidu's did is literally "ccp:" ...
outsomnia··on Ask HN: Suggestions for dealing with overwhelm?
Ditch the therapist and solve the problem, which is the job doesn't have a way to end well.

Look for a role that might pay a bit less, but won't eat all your time and make you think you need a therapist.

Your kids, your spouse, and your career all compete for all of your attention and it is a zero-sum game.

outsomnia··on The most satisfying checkbox
Right... I read a quote somewhere a few years ago by an architect: "anything that is not necessary, you will end up hating".
outsomnia··on We Put Half a Million Files in One Git Repository, Here’s What We Learned
Yeah... also once such a team exists, they are naturally going to resist ideas like not having a monorepo but just using git submodules, not keeping the history of every generated file forever etc.

Because then they won't need a 5-man team to handle the fallout any more.

outsomnia··on Terraform should have remained stateless
From the article:

Ansible, Puppet, etc. don’t have intermediate stores of the hosts’ configuration, but then again they are used for different things.

outsomnia··on Terraform should have remained stateless
> If the stateless way would work better, these tools take over the cloud infrastructure space.

The tools are not comparable in what they do.

outsomnia··on Something is wrong in the state of QED - history of physics
The PDF is interesting and comprehensible to mortals, has historical quotes from Feynman, Dirac etc agreeing with its thesis.
outsomnia··on Problems with my SSL certificate (Let's Encrypt)
LE's original CA root cert expired a few months ago

https://letsencrypt.org/docs/dst-root-ca-x3-expiration-septe...

under some conditions older devices that have not been updated neither accept the expired root CA, nor have a copy of the replacement cert.

You should ask the user about his system, when he last updated it etc.

outsomnia··on Tether starting to lose its peg too, after Terra did
If I understand it, this is similar to the UK / ERM 1992 "Black Wednesday"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Wednesday

There were more people wanting to sell the pound for Euros at the rate mandated by the ERM than resources the UK had to maintain the arbitrary exchange rate and "it did not end well".
