ourcat··on Delta Chat – decentralized chat via email
About six years ago, I built a similar app for an old long-distance (many timezones away) girlfriend and I to send voice messages to eachother. (called 'duovox' - not released to public). It created recordings and other metadata/attachments and simply zipped them up with a password and custom file extension and sent via email.

The app was naturally registered with the custom file extension, so that clicking the email attachment in the Mail app would simply open the app and the message it contained.

Very simple. Very effective. And using an existing and secure (one would hope!) transport: email.

ourcat··on React created roadblocks in our enterprise app
True. The build times are slow.

But the recent versions (and updating is also a breeze - mostly) should be faster. And particularly if you drop support for ES5 browsers.

AngularJS was indeed a bit of a pain when we switched to Angular 2+ and beyond, but it was so worth it.

I chose it because of the skillset that our current (small) team has. There's no way our 'designer' (more an HTML/CSS guy) could have wrapped his head around JSX, the way it mixes scripts with layout markup.

The way Angular separates concerns for us is great. And the components are extremely flexible and reactive and useful for iteration. And lazy-loaded routings? Yes please.

And with the Angular CLI and TypeScript typings and using VSCode it's an absolute joy to build sites with.

ourcat··on Why webcams aren’t good enough
I've always been amazed that Apple did the camera bulge.

I'm quite sure that an iPhone not being able to lay flat on a table without wobbling would have caused Steve Jobs to throw it at whoever designed it.

ourcat··on Can you treat loneliness by creating an imaginary friend?
It's quite common the UK, I'd say.

Though personally, I spoke to my cat.

ourcat··on Every day at the same time, my internet dies for 1 minute. How do I investigate?
Have you tried different WiFi channels?

I had a similar experience to this years ago while working at my mother's kitchen table for while. The network would keep going dead and I had no idea what was causing it.

Eventually, I discovered that it happened every time she used the microwave to heat up a drink or something.

Changing to a different WiFi channel fixed it. :)

ourcat··on Panic Re-Releases Audion and all its faces
Surprised to see no support for playlists. I would have thought .m3u would have been relatively easy to add playback support for.

Though, that would present a further UI/UX hurdle.

The issue with kids is a constant topic on the FB Quest groups.

I agree, it really can ruin most multi-player games.

Second Life used to have a similar issue iirc, until they created dedicated world for them.

The groups are also littered with parents asking about games for their kids (often less than FB's minimum age too).

FB really needs to address this issue, for the experiences (like ours) of the adults. And also the protection of the children.

ourcat··on New MacBook Pro models to feature magsafe, no touch bar and more ports: analyst
My Mid-2015 Macbook Pro is the last best machine they made.

They were like hen's teeth when I bought mine second-hand. Daily workhorse.

Probably too many pricing options.

And they could do with more explanation about what the options contain.

And the last 'tab' of the pricing options reveals the $10k and upwards cost of 'unlocking'. Maybe be a bit more upfront about that.

ourcat··on Full Throttle – fan film script by Duncan Jones [pdf]
I'd forgotten he did Source Code.

Moon was great. And particularly when you think about Space Oddity's "Major Tom" (and "The Man Who Fell To Earth").

ourcat··on 81k UK-owned .eu domains suspended as Brexit transition ends
Exactly. I was emailed back in 2018 about it. Multiple times. (by GoDaddy fwiw)
ourcat··on 81k UK-owned .eu domains suspended as Brexit transition ends
Then on Tue, 27 Nov 2018:

"In 2016, the United Kingdom voted to withdraw from the European Union. Soon new .eu registrations will be restricted to any natural person, company or organization residing in or established in the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway. This means that customers in the UK will no longer be able to register new .eu domains. Plus, .eu domains that are currently registered to UK addresses will be revoked.

These changes may take effect as early as March 30, 2019, but the deadline could shift as Brexit negotiations continue.

In light of these new policies, we're no longer offering .eu domains to UK residents. We also urge UK residents with .eu domains to consider their options: either update your registrant information to an .eu-compliant address or replace any .eu domains with other available options. "

ourcat··on 81k UK-owned .eu domains suspended as Brexit transition ends
Tue, 14 Aug 2018. Email from GoDaddy:

Brexit is coming, and it brings changes to .eu domains like (mydomain).eu

"Now that the UK has voted to withdraw from the European Union, the registry for .eu domains (EURid) has decided to revoke domains registered to UK residents, and prevent them from purchasing new ones.

In light of this decision we will no longer offer .eu domains to UK residents. EURid may act as early as March 30, 2019, but the deadline might shift as Brexit negotiations continue.

You still have options, though. You can either update your registrant address to one outside the UK, or replace your .eu domains with another option."

I lost mine. But we were told about this quite a long time ago now.
ourcat··on Slack is down
Ah I see now, having read more of the history. Calling it that seems pretty misleading/odd.

(We use GitLab and Mattermost (integration) where I work. I've been 'remote / WFH' for the past 7 years.)

ourcat··on Notion is having a service interruption
My thoughts exactly. (HN is slow here too, from the UK)
ourcat··on Slack is down
My point was really that it's GitLab's own product. "GitLab Mattermost" [https://docs.gitlab.com/omnibus/gitlab-mattermost/]

I'm amazed they use Slack at all. Let alone as a fallback.

ourcat··on Slack is down
"Something's not quite right"

Another classic.

ourcat··on Slack is down
I'm quite surprised that you don't use Mattermost as a 'Slack fallback' at GitLab.
ourcat··on URL shorteners set ad tracking cookies
I did that for a while with a short domain I used to own (urlb.at). Then ended up regretting it and shutting it down.

I eventually decided that URL shorteners were a terrible idea for the web and that I wanted the 'actual' URLs out there.

ourcat··on South Korea now has 11M 5G subscribers
All that car stuff came up in some of the various specification papers about 5G.
ourcat··on South Korea now has 11M 5G subscribers
'Cloud computing'? People having remote access to much higher power machines than they do at home. And being able to use them with minimal lag?

Cloud gaming companies are going to benefit a lot from 5G I think. Also Machine Learning on remote GPUs.

I've also read that car manufacturers want to use 5G technology for cars to communicate with each other.

ourcat··on HTML5 still doesn't replicate what mattered about Flash
If Electron wasn't such a large minimal build, that's the way I think things could go.

I think something more like Web Components would be the direction I'd look in for a solution to this.

ourcat··on Flash Player is about to stop working on Windows 10
See the link in my previous reply below.

You've had to manually "Allow" it for a while, if a site needs it.

But it's really Adobe dropping support of it, who announced it in 2017.

ourcat··on Flash Player is about to stop working on Windows 10
The warning says "Flash Player will no longer be supported after December 2020".

Clicking "Learn More" takes you here : https://www.blog.google/products/chrome/saying-goodbye-flash...

ourcat··on Flash Player is about to stop working on Windows 10
Chrome is dropping support imminently (at the end of the year). It's been showing a warning and date about it for quite a while (if you still have it active).
ourcat··on Show HN: PSX Party – Online Multiplayer Playstation 1 Emulator Using WebRTC
Not at all hinting at a downside. Just pointing out that 'Jitsi' is the sum of various parts ;)

(I'm currently looking in to using Mediasoup for some WebRTC to RTMP ideas I've been mulling.)
