otaviokz··on Attention Is My Most Valuable Asset for Productivity as a Software Developer
Couldn't agree more. I worked 2 years 100% pairing, it's just too much. I also have some mildly introspective personality and the extra overhead of communicating every single word typed not only interferes with my deep thinking, but would make me feel exhausted by 4pm, instead of my normal capacity to work long hours for quite a few days before starting to realise I needed to rest.
otaviokz··on Clues to identify a destructive leader
Amen! Taking a common perception and wrapping it in a lot of cheap psychoanalysis (without even providing references) belongs somewhere else.
otaviokz··on Clues to identify a destructive leader
The feeling of guilt is, unfortunately, normal. Just try to keep in mind you didn't really do nothing wrong, and it will help overcoming it faster.
otaviokz··on The Delight of Development
As soon as read "hacking" being used as a synonym for coding/development, I started to get angry. I still read it just in case I was wrong, just to end up being right, and angry.
otaviokz··on Building all of our new mobile apps using React Native
Saw it happening a few times in my 12 year of industry. I suppose it's specifically common in companies that use social media (and other media) presence as a recruitment boosting tool.

Twice the "leader" of the "Totally Amazing Success" left the company to "be totally amazing" somewhere else. In both cases the team was made mostly of very young engineers, the level of amazingness was strongly overestimated. It was also declared very early, before the "novelty" of the "new thing" faded, and also before the downsides appeared while maintaining the product.

otaviokz··on Journal will publish heavily criticized paper on gender differences in physics
Answering to a "male problem" (e.g. men pursuing less education) by stating it's actually another example of bias agains women ("that's because women need more education to get the same job") is not really a constructive position, is it?
otaviokz··on قلب: a non-ASCII programming language written in Arabic
Yep. That's probably why you'll never met a developer without a rudimentary understanding of written english.
otaviokz··on To hire neurodiverse workers, one firm got rid of job interviews
Also, it seems out of question for people who're employed. Not sure how to "WFH one week", paid or not, when you have another job.
otaviokz··on To hire neurodiverse workers, one firm got rid of job interviews
As a slightly above average dev in London (and I mean it), I feel that for many big companies the interview process always achieve on thing: to avoid hiring anyone who could really transform it for the better.
otaviokz··on The US nuclear forces’ messaging system finally got rid of its floppy disks
"The thought of some ux monkey using npm anywhere near our ICBMs makes my physically ill."

Almost spilled my coffee reading this one.

otaviokz··on The benefits of a more asynchronous workplace
Unfortunately there's always people living in the 1800s...
otaviokz··on Interested in improving your relationships? Try Nonviolent Communication
To be fair, I believe a big part of this kind of reaction often comes from being pushed trendy "easy fix for something important" from HR or top management quite frequently.
otaviokz··on The Navy's Patent for a Compact Nuclear Fusion Reactor
I'm not sure I got it right:

Did it cost you ~$50k to file your patent?

otaviokz··on macOS Catalina
"The new Find My app combines Find My iPhone and Find My Friends into a single, easy-to-use app on Mac, iPad and iPhone. Find My can help users locate a missing Mac even if it’s offline and sleeping by sending out Bluetooth signals that can be detected by Apple devices in use nearby, and then relaying the detected location of the Mac to iCloud so a user can can locate it in the Find My app."

I'm curious about what kind of T&C will need to be accepted for this to work.

otaviokz··on We Are All Confident Idiots (2014)
Bob, Is that you?

Whenever I go to the pub and meet old timers still working there keep telling me funny stories about how you swear loudly every time you open a code file I've touched.

Thanks for all the laughs.

otaviokz··on We Are All Confident Idiots (2014)
This helped me in quite a few interviews, and I'm only 39yo. Thanks for putting it in a clear, logic and fun way. My brain had guessed the basic mechanism, but hadn't formulated it in words yet.

For that, I humbly concede you the title of my "BS Master".

otaviokz··on I used to fear being a nobody, then I left social media
So, if I get this right, her addiction got so bad she needed to upgrade from posting on social media to writing to the NYT? </irony>
otaviokz··on Kickstarter Has Fired Two Union Organizers in 8 Days
Should they need a special motive/excuse to unionise?
otaviokz··on Why do developers at Google consider Agile development to be nonsense? (2016)
I think the probability of you being right is definitely above 50%.
otaviokz··on I was a 10x engineer and I’m sorry
"A 10x engineer is usually levitating, and farting out 1's and 0's as they whiteboard a proof that P=NP. They stopped sleeping before they were born. They are usually typing on two keyboards simultaneously."
otaviokz··on China Prepares to Drop Microsoft Windows, Blames U.S. Hacking Threat
This level of one sidedness scares me. It's just as easy for a Russian/Chinese/Iranian/etc citizen to say the same about US.

I'd say it's easier, if you take into account the ludicrous number of military bases the US has all around the world, the constant involvement in one or more wars, the infinite sabre rattling with North Korea, the unconditional support for what ever the hell Israel decides to do.

I don't think US is more or less naturally inclined to be an international bully, but they have the capacity and actually do it on a scale no other country can since the USSR dissolved.

otaviokz··on China Has Whole Towns Focused on Making Electric Cars
It has the largest inmate population in the world, in total number, not %.

Can you imagine if China locked up the same % of it's population?

otaviokz··on California is cracking down on the gig economy
"You value security and loyalty, because that's what your generation was raised with."

How could you possibly know that much about the person you're responding to? He only state he's "older", but didn't say which country, city, religion etc. Even if he did so, it wouldn't say much.

I know people in their 60s that believe in may things you stated, and others in their 20s who disagree with you about everything you said (and I mean high income young software engineers, not someone in need of state help).

Also, it's just my personal opinion from now on:

Don't reason in such absolute ways, everything is much more complex than "your generation" and "my generation" could possibly convey, and even inside a specific age/region/education/income group, the way people think and act varies wildly (and they are probably all both right and wrong depending on subject).

Don't put so much trust on your adaptability and skillset, you never know how the world will change and how you will react to it. I really hope it will just get better, be you never know. I'm only 39yo and saw quite a few highly skilled people go down because of unexpected physical/mental health issues.

Anyway, please don't take it as me trying to "prove you wrong". Well, as humans we almost always do a little of it, but it seems to em I used to think like you at some point and it brought me quite some pain. Maybe I'm misinterpreting you and am just an idiot, but I felt like writing.

Have a great week!

contract work is just great

otaviokz··on Huawei reassesses goal to be world’s bestselling smartphone vendor
What news do you read? From here it seems quite divided.
otaviokz··on Experiments find higher social class more likely to have inflated sense of skill
My anecdotal experience agrees with your point. I'm a Brazilian living in UK, and have worked for 2 different big American companies (Dell Computers and Ford Motors). It's very obvious that, comparing to both Brazilian and British cultures, Americans appear to value confidence far more, to the point of coming across as bullish when you're not familiar with it.

Again, it's just my experience.

otaviokz··on American life is improving for the lowest paid
"What’s really rare, he adds, is his annual week of paid holiday"

I may be getting it wrong as I don't live in US, but does it mean he only gets one week of holidays per year? Is there any other form of paid off time?

otaviokz··on We Must Defend Science in the Face of Political Attacks
Spot on mate. Not only a sharp and valid point, but also made me laugh.
otaviokz··on We Must Defend Science in the Face of Political Attacks
Text interpretation should also be valued, as well as the importance of "not completely twisting another person's comment to suit your own views". Your comment extrapolates wildly from the one you responded too, and thats AMAZINGLY POLITICAL AND ALSO DISHONEST.

*ps sorry for any English mistake, as it's not my first language.
