I've said this myself as Java's reification of mid 90s OO and poor interop via JNI are not to my taste. But I've spent 25yrs in banking with JPMC, BoA, Barclays et al. Done lots of interop with Cobol on S/390, AS/400 and VME. Never heard of any of those systems being rewritten in Java. Have encountered key mainframe prod systems for which source is lost.
So my imperfect understanding is they formalised Escher's shading tricks. And so systematised making the impossible look possible. Which is what magicians do by gaming our perceptual firmware. Which is the reverse of what we do when debugging a nasty corner case. The observed behaviours seem impossible, until our perception of possible causes realigns.
UK too, and concerned. I agree that amendment 1 and 2 provisions effectively underpin individual freedom in the US due to founder perspicacity. My fear re US constitutional provision is on separation of powers, and transfer of power. Fortunately Pence held to the constitution. Nobody ever willingly takes their hands of the levers of power!
Written code is an auditable entity in regulated businesses, like banks. Fowler suggests we get more comfortable with uncertainty because other eng domains have developed good risk mgmt. Cart before horse. Other engineering domains strive to mitigate the irreducible uncertainty of the physical world. AI adds uncertainty to any system. And there are many applications where increased uncertainty will lead to an increase in human suffering.
I leaned heavily on my own meta cognition recently when withdrawing from a bereavment benzo habit recently. The combo of flu symptoms, anxiety and hallucinations are fierce. I knew O was seeing things that were not real; light fittings turning into a rotating stained glass slideshow. So I'm totally on board with the visual model hypothesis. My own speculation is that audio perception is less predictive as audio structure persists deeper into my own DMT sessions than does vision, where perspective quickly collapses and vision becomes kaleidoscopic. Which may be a return to the vision we had as newborns. Maybe normal vision is only attained via socialisation?
The sound a crossplane V8 makes is especially delightful due to the [necessarily] asymmetric firing order. Crossplanes fire every 90 degrees, flatplanes every 180. Flatplanes produce a metallic yowl, crossplanes a fruity burble. Beats and timing are hardwired into human psychoacoustics somehow. Beats are counts without explicit numerals. The idea of mathematical aesthetic standards are appealing cf golden ratio. Crossplane firing asymmetry tickles my aesthetic fancy somehow via the Beats. So my overpowered Merc V8 is music to my ears!
Good points from Omar on the ergonomics of build systems and optimising for the most prominent scenarios. Wondering what OP motivation for cmake comes from? Does OP have some other codebase in play that mandates make?
And the gauges are just as important. Obligatory ref to Brad Cox seminal 1990 paper, Planning the Software Industrial Revolution, and it's compelling analogy with Eli Whitney.
Amyloid plaques are my greatest fear. One parent. One GP. Natural intelligence is declining. When I arrive at dementia in 20 years the level of empathy and NI in the general population will be feral. Time to book the flight to CH.
We humans are in huge misalignment. Obviously at the macro political scale. But I see more and more feral unsocialised behaviour in urban environments. Obviously social media is a big factor. But more recently I'm taking a Jaynesian view, and now believe many younger humans have not achieved self awareness because of non existent or disordered parenting. And no direct awareness of own thoughts. So how can they possibly have empathy? Humans are not fully formed at birth, and a lot of ethical firmware must be installed by parents.
Same for dairy cattle: males are redundant. My grandfather was an AI pioneer in the UK in the 1940s. AI being artificial insemination of dairy cattle....
My father taught HnD computing in the 70s and 80s at Trent Poly. One of his industry contacts did time for shipping DEC Vax VMS kit to Bulgaria in crates marked "tractor parts"...
Yes, no extension points as you would have in a template style framework which executes canned imperative functionality around blocks of app code in a pre determined manner. ImGui is compositional, and you can compose render funcs in any order you like. Though the programming style appears imperative, the ImGui model is deeply functional, though implicitly so. IMHO Forth style threaded imperative models capture the implicitly functional model well.
