I almost exclusively use Max reasoning for all my work
ostwilkens··on A Preview of DuckDB v2.0
"A major version bump is not something we do lightly, and it is not just ceremony"

For me, this sentence pops out like a sore thumb

ostwilkens··on Sleep regularity is a stronger predictor of mortality risk than sleep duration (2023)
The only thing that worked for me was having a kid. He wakes up early every day, so I have no choice. Taking care of him is so taxing, being sleep deprived isn't on the table.
ostwilkens··on Ask HN: What is the international distribution/statistics of HN visitors?
Two of my blog posts were on the front page earlier this year, netting 56k unique visitors. The visits were spread over multiple days, and should cover different timezones somewhat well. The analytics are located at an endpoint which looks vital, and should bypass most adblockers.

ostwilkens··on 2002: Last.fm and Audioscrobbler Herald the Social Web
Still scrobbling since 2008. A lot of smaller artists used to upload their music to last.fm, and I found a lot of gems there (specifically in the swedish bitpop scene).
ostwilkens··on VCMI: An open-source engine for Heroes III
> add new towns, creatures, heroes, artifacts and spells without limits or conflicts

If the original game had these features, it would likely have gotten me into programming at an even earlier age!

ostwilkens··on VCMI: An open-source engine for Heroes III
Very cool! I have one non-technical friend who occasionally wants to play HOMM, and she often has issues getting it working (specifically non-hd, non-hota on intel mac). This could be a remedy.
ostwilkens··on Laptops with Stickers
I love this... I haven't had the courage to "spend" my sticker collection on my current laptop, as they obviously don't last forever. A solution could be to photograph the old cover, and print it as a full-size sticker as a starting point for the next laptop!
ostwilkens··on Laptops with Stickers
Love it! I'll showcase my sticker collection on my laptop as soon as I come up with a way to make them reusable.
ostwilkens··on Game design is simple
> Bottom line: fun is basically about making progress on prediction.

I'm having some trouble parsing this sentence. Does he mean that "player has fun if their predictions lead to progress"?

ostwilkens··on Writing 23 Games in 24 Days (in Rust)
Thanks for trying it! This is actually intentional, to make the game playable in the "end-game" where you level up ~every second :-)
ostwilkens··on What happens when clergy take psilocybin
It's a nice thought. If an idea could be encoded... that each persons idea of a concept, viewed in the right dimensionality, has a rough, similar outline. At least, that's my interpretation of your idea. :-) Your comment either triggered, or made me notice an ongoing shift in my worldview. Thank you!
ostwilkens··on Inigo Quilez: computer graphics, mathematics, shaders, fractals, demoscene
IQ, along with shadertoy and hg_sdf are my learning resources for raymarching. A great way to get into demoscene production.
ostwilkens··on Minimum Viable Blog
>The most important thing in blogging is to get something simple that will not get the way of you actually writing.

Yes! I find the easiest way for me is to just open a new tab in my code editor and typing.

Exif is a real gotcha. I'm planning to compress images anyway, so this could be done in the same step.

ostwilkens··on Minimum Viable Blog
Thank you for the kind words. RSS and dates will definitely be needed! I can also see myself wanting to embed shaders and web games in the future... hopefully without increasing the complexity too much. I think your blog is perfect!
ostwilkens··on Minimum Viable Blog
That seems like a great stack, if you're looking for one!
ostwilkens··on Minimum Viable Blog
Wow, yes.. that's actually exactly what happened here :-)
ostwilkens··on Minimum Viable Blog
Looks nice and minimal as well. Love the look of your blog!

The markdown2 package includes an option for syntax highlighting. You need to bring your own css though.

ostwilkens··on Minimum Viable Blog
I would be genuinely interested to know how well the average wordpress blog handles a hug from the HN frontpage! :-)
ostwilkens··on Minimum Viable Blog
True! Luckily, I don't have a need for those features :-)
ostwilkens··on Minimum Viable Blog
Thanks! Yeah, I find this a lot easier. And yes, hosting is an exercise left to the reader :-) I might write about my hosting setup in an upcoming blog post.
ostwilkens··on Minimum Viable Blog
Oh yes, good catch! The code in the post is the first draft from O1 and this string has been replaced with {{ title }}.
ostwilkens··on Minimum Viable Blog
That's fair!

1- I'm leaning towards an automatically generated file containing metadata, TOML or such

2- RSS is definitely coming, but is dependent on point 1 :-)

ostwilkens··on Open-Source Cola
The difference in taste of Jolt is too large to be attributed to only caffeine and beet sugar.

While it's not open source, there is a successor to Jolt Cola in Germany called Volt Cola. It's supposedly the same recipe as Jolt, except it has more caffeine. Jolt was too long ago for me to compare the taste, but it's good.

ostwilkens··on FastHTML – Modern web applications in pure Python
"What's the FastAPI of frontend?" - A tweet I wrote 2022 I'll give this a go for my next project!
ostwilkens··on Zed on Linux Is Here
I have been able to disable+hide every element of the Zed UI which I don't have use for, so far.
