ost-ing··on PCB is brought to you by Fable 5
I followed them for a while before the AI craze started. It looked promising back then, but I wasnt willing to invest time and attention back then on something so new.

Good thing I didn’t

ost-ing··on macOS 27 Golden Gate – Review
If you don't want your mbp to run like garbage, then don't update to the newest version of obsolescenceOS.
ost-ing··on I co-founded Burning Man. The festival has lost its soul
I always considered Garbicz a very commercial festival even from the very beginning. The ticket was expensive, food was included, all infrastructure already built and you party and leave without much thought at all. The people also had little regard for the beautiful nature and lake - A pretty typical techno festival catering for the Berlin clubscene.

Burns usually are completely different. Yeah Burning Man is super commercial now, but smaller more obscure burns happen all over the world, including Europe. They run on participant preparation and donation, these still embody what Burning Man was originally about

ost-ing··on I've vibe coded an application to see what it's like
Coming down from acid makes you feel hollow?
ost-ing··on The Rust on ESP Book
“the new API WILL require you to rethink your code”

I recall we had roughly the same experience. Tried to use the OTA API that was rewritten and it was a disaster. The contributors opinion was atrocious, and we had deliverables to deliver so we ended up just hacking it and using unsafe globals to workaround how opinionated it was.

Ive been developing rust embedded applications for about 5 years, so im not new to it either.

I get people want to be ideologically biased with how they structure code, but a public API should be flexible enough to work in a wide range of situations, and what irks me about it is that there isn't really much benefit, if at all, for the pain, time and money it takes to adjust it.

ost-ing··on The US is charging an American citizen for wiping his phone at the border
“Stealing” implies they aren’t rightfully yours. Ownership of self determination, freedom etc are human rights, as is breathing clean air, or drinking clean water. We all are born into this world with an inherent set of rights.

No authority should ever be above that, unless you take those same rights away from another.

Authority and the State steals these rights from us, slowly eroding them under the guise of safety, passing immoral midnight legislation like Chat Control, or declaring a state of emergency. Time and time again we find ourselves in a prison and time and time again we start the next inevitable revolution.

ost-ing··on The growing vigilante movement to knock out Flock surveillance cameras
There is a growing counter-tech neo luddite movement forming, and I think its going to get very large. At some point we need to step back and ask - why are we simply accepting technologies that erode freedoms and subjugate the masses
ost-ing··on What I learned selling 2,500 MIDI recorders: Hardware is not so hard
Im not an expert in emissions testing but pretty sure it still needs CE certification testing. The module shouldnt cause any problems providing that the firmware for the transmitter is configured properly, and is placed sanely in the enclosure, but the entire product must still undergo the relevant testing for 2.4GHz emitters.

Just because you use a certified module doesn't give you a free pass.

ost-ing··on Codex Micro
This really just highlights the desperation OpenAI is facing right now. These controllers have existed forever - why the f would anyone buy this?
ost-ing··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
What a vomit burger. “Evil”exists everywhere, not just in your biases
ost-ing··on Leaving GitHub for Forgejo
Primarily anti AI. Also doesn't feel like my private repositories are both truly private, nor safe there anymore
ost-ing··on Meta's embrace of AI is making its employees miserable
As someone who has spent a vast portion of life believing technology would make life better, I've come to the realisation that this idea is a fallacy. Technology amplifies power and until we collectively redefine and enforce a value system that benefits us all, the advancements in technology simply serve as a means of subjugation
ost-ing··on Ghostty is leaving GitHub
GitHubs AI usage policy was enough for me to leave. Sick of corporate overlords stealing everything from us.

If it’s free - you are the product.

ost-ing··on I cancelled Claude: Token issues, declining quality, and poor support
> That's vibecoding with an extra documentation step.

This sounds like an LLM talking.

Either you're a bot, or our human languages are being modified in realtime by the influence of these tools.

ost-ing··on Sam Altman's home targeted in second attack
What is unacceptable is how these technology companies steal the IP of collective humanity, gate keep it and force us to pay a subscription service to use it against each other in a perverted downward spiral powered by capitalist game theory. The neoluddite revolution is forming, have no doubts about that.
ost-ing··on Fix the iOS keyboard before the timer hits zero or I'm switching back to Android
Im convinced its all planned to force users to upgrade. The “7 years of updates” selling point is just a trojan horse to install a newer iOS that makes the product run like garbage.

Id honestly prefer never to update than get these bogus “security updates, features and fixes”

ost-ing··on iOS 26.3 and macOS 26.3 Fix Dozens of Vulnerabilities, Including Zero-Day
Maybe they can fix Messages from bugging out all the time. Apple software has gone down the drain. I don’t want a million new features I just want the ones that make a phone a phone actually work 99.5% of the time
ost-ing··on EU–INC – A new pan-European legal entity
Germany never thought it would be in the current situation - decaying health care, pension system, cornerstone industry in decline, lack of digitalization, the list goes on. Massive reforms are needed, action is needed, but there is too much inertia in the system to change anything quickly.

Smaller countries like Estonia have the ability to be much more nimble.

ost-ing··on EU–INC – A new pan-European legal entity
Ah yes the perfect scapegoat to blame for your miserable life
ost-ing··on Iran report says 16,500 dead in 'genocide under digital darkness'
> This is a moral failure of the highest order and it underscores, for me at least, that most of these faux-progressives' activism is purely performative.

It is worse than that. Faux-progressives will also play into antisemitic conspiratorial tropes that this was all perfectly and precisely planned.

ost-ing··on ThinkNext Design
I switched to a T480 from a crappy macbook pro 2017. I enjoyed the switch to use linux fulltime but ultimately I was let down by the Intel processor that would throttle very badly. Compiling code was a nightmare. Ive since switched back to the M1 macbook pro which I plan to keep as long as possible and probably switch to linux when macos inevitably decides my hardware is too old to support. I would love to have a non-apple future, though.
ost-ing··on Roam 50GB is now Roam 100GB
Musk has excellent products but I wouldn't give him a dime. I have no problem with conservative politics, but his flavour is well beyond that.
ost-ing··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
The hardware is very good, it can absolutely last 10 years and is miles ahead of competition - which pains me even more that the software degrades. I will eventually install linux on my M1 but I shouldn’t have to.
ost-ing··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
Apple software has noticeably declined from my experience, both iOS and macOS. I find the lifecycle of Apple products to be offensively short, also.

If I buy a product and the hardware is good for 10 years (because I looked after it), I expect the software to also run just as well as when I purchased it - that is the case with Linux, why isn't it the case with macOS?

Every year the software upgrades invariably degrade system performance. Outrageous.

ost-ing··on Contracts for C
Exactly, panicking is a safer way to handle the situation rather than memory access violations
ost-ing··on Undefined Behavior in C and C++ (2024)
I find with C/++ I have to compile to find warnings and errors, while with Rust I get more information automatically due to the modern type and linking systems. As a result I compile Rust significantly less times which is a massive speed increase.

Rusts tooling is hands down better than C/++ which aids to a more streamlined and efficient development experience

ost-ing··on Fight Chat Control
> What sort of mindset is that?

Its the mindset of neckbeards who don't realize its not the 1990’s anymore, that the landscape has changed significantly and people cannot protect themselves let alone their children from it.

Implementation obviously matters and it is indeed a delicate situation, but that does not negate the need for solutions.

ost-ing··on Fight Chat Control
Love it when you make a statement that porn isnt harmful without referencing any studies, and then demand studies for people to prove it is harmful. You are the one who made the original claim that its not harmful, the burden of proof is on you.
ost-ing··on Tell HN: AI hype is bs but AI models are useful
Like with any new wave of technology, the masses try to ride the wave, however they can - either creating a spinoff company that will ultimately go bust, or spamming hn with blog posts about their experiences.

It’s yet another hype cycle, and exhibits very similar traits as the dotcom bubble. Want funding? Just use a .ai domain.

CEOs are talking about AGI or super-intelligence, but this is all hype driven nonsense to try to convince people that their stock evaluations are justified.

Whats particularly dangerous about this hype cycle is that the technologists try to convince us that humans are now replaceable with said technology, this teaches people to be lazy, promotes brain rot and ultimately leverages the situation even more.

It’s going to pop.

ost-ing··on Ask HN: What is the go-to programming language in your industry and why?
Embedded developer here, I focus on audio hardware and robotics. Although C/++ is still dominate Rust is becoming more and more popular. I now specialise in embedded Rust, with a fallback to C/++. C++ is fine, but I prefer the modern language feats, safety guarantees, toolchains, package management etc of Rust.
