ossworkerrights··on Offering software for snooping to governments is a booming business
I am wondering why aren’t protests staged in front of these companies’ offices. If they have any in the US or the EU, doing it in saudi arabia, china, etc. means certain death.
ossworkerrights··on If this project is dead, just tell us
Here is a radical approach to software development. Paying for it's development and maintenance. How does that sound as a disruptor? Pay for pipenv's continued development, and for other software you use and depend on.
ossworkerrights··on VirtualBox 6.1
You may have to pay for other people's work, and that's even more scary for OSS freeloaders.
ossworkerrights··on Instagram Face: The rise of selfie make-up and quest for hyper-perfection (2018)
I didn't comment on wether someone read the article. I stated that the description is accurate enough for it not to mandate a picture.
ossworkerrights··on Instagram Face: The rise of selfie make-up and quest for hyper-perfection (2018)
Yes, but what is the point of that reddit?
ossworkerrights··on Instagram Face: The rise of selfie make-up and quest for hyper-perfection (2018)
Somehow i don't like this kind of reddits - gives me the impression they are hate-groups.
ossworkerrights··on Instagram Face: The rise of selfie make-up and quest for hyper-perfection (2018)
I agree, the reason i find it worrying tho is because of the lack of diversity. the massive reach means even more people will have a uniform set of standards.
ossworkerrights··on Instagram Face: The rise of selfie make-up and quest for hyper-perfection (2018)
Pretty impressive - the size of js crap these days is horrible.
ossworkerrights··on Instagram Face: The rise of selfie make-up and quest for hyper-perfection (2018)
I think they describe it pretty accurately. The idea here is that the face is fake and propped up and pretty identical between “top” users of instagram. That’s a bit worrying.
ossworkerrights··on We Only Hire the Trendiest (2016)
“ Contractors are generally not the strongest technically” huh?
ossworkerrights··on Intel’s Manufacturing Roadmap from 2019 to 2029
Thanks for this - great explanation!
ossworkerrights··on Intel’s Manufacturing Roadmap from 2019 to 2029
So it’s marketing speak.
ossworkerrights··on FUSE for macOS is no longer open source
Why don't you do it for free, after work hours? Man this kind of entitlement boggles my mind.
ossworkerrights··on FUSE for macOS is no longer open source
I think there should be either a dual licensing model, where if a company earns more than X$ they need to pay a license, if you are a student wanting to learn more about how its implement then it's free, or you just have to pay for it.

OSS has killed indie development, for the benefit of large corporations. Thousands of developers out there are putting in their own sweat blood and tears in advancing "humanity" by building great OSS products, only to be taken advantage of. Seal the pipe. Charge money for great work!

ossworkerrights··on FUSE for macOS is no longer open source
Finally. People need to understand that expecting someone to put their OWN free time into making something open source, and the ripping off the monetary gain AND expecting them to continue maintaining and adding features for free is pure entitlement.
ossworkerrights··on Ask HN: What mistakes did you make when starting as a consultant/freelancer?
My most regrettable mistake was not doing it earlier in my career.
ossworkerrights··on No to Chrome
The internet in Germany is heavily policed and censored. There was a post a few days ago here on hackernews where someone from another country had their domain abusively confiscated by some german police entity.
ossworkerrights··on No to Chrome
I am quite satisfied with using chrome. Once there will be suitable alternative i will gladly move away from it tho, just a breath of fresh air.
ossworkerrights··on Kanagawa government hard disks swiped, sold online
Wouldn't it mean that the lessor would be allowed to sell the drives? I mean if you rent them out, and they are handing the goods back would you just destroy them? Something doesn't sound right here.
ossworkerrights··on Elementary OS 5.1 Hera
I'm not sure why you are getting downvoted, as this is a legitimate issue. If the authors want someone else but themselves to contribute to this MacOS clone, they should use a more common language.
ossworkerrights··on Elementary OS 5.1 Hera
Wondering how copyright infringement applies to Open Source Software. This OS looks a lot like MacOS, making it a free a clone.
ossworkerrights··on Kanagawa government hard disks swiped, sold online
I am curious why they chose to rent them instead of buying them, and how many times over they paid their price by doing so?
ossworkerrights··on How to fight back against Google AMP as a web user and a web developer
I really doubt google will become "irrelevant" anytime soon. What most of us nerds forget is that tech products become popular when they solve real life issues for non technical people. We can sit here and debate all day what protocols are better, and which browse is cooler, and why Google is evil, because it will not become irrelevant anytime soon unless there is a better end user product. Happy bashing Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc because no one cares, really. What they care is "how to cook potato soup" showing relevant results, and having their pictures generate likes and their unneeded products delivered tomorrow.
ossworkerrights··on FBI asked Sony for data on user who used PlayStation network to sell cocaine
So then the question is how do we make sure it can't be exploited? Or is the privacy of racist and yo mama jokes on the PSN network more important than catching criminals or terrorists?
ossworkerrights··on FBI asked Sony for data on user who used PlayStation network to sell cocaine
I agree with the statement that oppressive regimes around the world abuse this, but I would argue it's up to peoples of those countries to fight back.

"They don't need to use PSN to communicate." but they do, and that's the issue. We know they use publicly accessible communication systems that law enforcement needs to have visibility over _when required and approved by a judge_. Therefore I think the issue is how do we make sure that law enforcement can access such data when they genuinely need to? What laws need to change in that regard, instead of what laws need to be made so we can obscure their visibility even more, and have the likes of ISIS or other organised cults / crime rings organise right in front of us. To be honest, although a very bad thing, i'd rather have one person falsely accused rather than 100 people dead because of a terrorist attack organised on the PSN network that we just wouldn't hand data over, so we can protect kids' privacy over making jokes about "yo mama".

ossworkerrights··on FBI asked Sony for data on user who used PlayStation network to sell cocaine
I get the sarcasm. But what is the solution really? Letting actual criminals hide behind online chat networks? Or making sure that there is always a valid reason for their communication to be read, so we don't have such abuse made against honest people?
ossworkerrights··on FBI asked Sony for data on user who used PlayStation network to sell cocaine
I agree, it did happen, but the issue is then making sure rogue prosecutors are brought to justice, not making it easier for criminals to hide behind high tech and have their endeavours protected by "freedom of speech".
ossworkerrights··on FBI asked Sony for data on user who used PlayStation network to sell cocaine
I do care about the right to privacy, and the freedom of speech. But I also care about police being able to investigate these new ways of communication that criminals have at their disposal. If it were classic letters, phone calls, or a restaurant discussion these would have easily been intercepted by the police. The same needs to happen with online communication when there is a crime taking place. And online communication can only be "intercepted" by storing it somewhere and making it available when need be.
ossworkerrights··on FBI asked Sony for data on user who used PlayStation network to sell cocaine
Specifically, how does catching drug dealers harm you, unless you are a drug dealer? IMO this is exactly why we should collect more data to catch them, terrorists, pedos, and so on. And this is a good example to why if you are not a criminal you need not worry. If you are, it can indeed harm you.
ossworkerrights··on Sinkholed
Wow, so a German entity can just go around and confiscate internet domain names, without a warrant? That's really dangerous.
