oscilloscope··on Google Finance Now Showing Bitcoin Price
Here's another one:

US Naval Research published the TorCoin protocol last week to encourage growth of the dark web. When asked how TorCoins would develop enough value to compensate the nefarious relays, one author stated that he hoped the public would speculate on it as an investment, "just like Dogecoin".

oscilloscope··on How the Recession Reshaped the Economy, in 255 Charts
The scroll effects at the top of the page make my browser weep. I keep getting stuck in weird half-states with the charts moving in and out of the intro text. The hovers are quite laggy. This is Chrome on a Macbook Pro.
oscilloscope··on Poll: Unban TempleOS?
Terry Davis created LoseThos/SparrowOS/TempleOS which is an operating system designed for recreational programming. He's worked on it nearly full-time for the past 10 years. He has a mental disorder and sometimes thinks there is a conspiracy going on against him and his OS. He believes God speaks through his operating system and has directed him to create it.

He's banned on HN for frequently being aggressive and using offensive language, especially the N-word (which may not mean the same thing to him as its historical meaning). Some on HN feel that banning for this reason effectively discriminates someone due to their mental illness. He sometimes posts good content and has valuable insights.

The argument against un-banning is that you can still read his posts if you have an HN account and turn showdead on. Terry is an esoteric personality, but many of us are aware of his work and enable showdead for this reason. The posts aren't entirely censored.

This seems incredibly wasteful.
oscilloscope··on Vis.js: A Visual Interaction System
I'd argue that much of D3's power comes not from the update pattern for DOM elements, but the reusable components pattern.

http://bost.ocks.org/mike/chart/

Examples in the core library, all compatible with Canvas, include scales, layouts, geographic projections, time/color utilities, CSV/TSV loading, and behaviors (drag/zoom/etc). There's some built-in canvas rendering like d3.geo.path which can be provided a canvas context.

The only things you lose are selections and the convenient transitions that go along with selections. But you can use these to modify and transition the canvas elements themselves!

oscilloscope··on TempleOS Demands
The lack of emulated speaker drivers in VirtualBox prevented me from enjoying the auditory experiences in TempleOS, such as the hymns.

oscilloscope··on Show HN: Bitcoin derivatives – call and put options
Quick question about MtGox data, since the relevant crowd may be here. Do the activities of User 15 in these charts appear to have anything to do with options trading?

oscilloscope··on The MtGox 500
A torrent found on Reddit the day it was leaked. It looks like mods may have removed that thread:

If you find a copy, don't run the .exe file contained within. It contains malware.

Each dot is a trade. I pulled the columns from the db we generated with the raw info of that one big trade, so you can see what the structure of the source data looks like. Removed the user id of the buyer, but it's trivial to find if you have the dataset.

Green -> Buying bitcoin with any currency

Red -> Selling bitcoin for USD

Blue -> Selling bitcoin for any non-USD currency

oscilloscope··on Peter R’s Theory on the Collapse of Mt. Gox
Insuring Bitcoin in 2011 sounds like a scam already.
oscilloscope··on Free Money for Everyone
In the cryptocurrency world, there's an interesting free money experiment being launched in Iceland this month: Auroracoin. http://www.auroracoin.org/

Auroracoin's goals are not quite as relevant for the US, since we don't have a public national ID database and our dollar is incredibly strong. But the distribution of a pre-mined cryptocoin could be one type of universal income. It's also a way to experiment with relatively few consequences to the existing economy.

oscilloscope··on Joint Statement Regarding the Insolvency of Mt. Gox
The difference is that this would be industry-led and new bitcoin can't simply be printed.

There's actually some precedent for this in the March 2013 blockchain fork, when miners on the abandoned fork were reimbursed for lost block rewards from Bitcoin Faucet funds.

Also Save Dogemas was a community effort just a few months ago. It's goal was to reimburse Dogecoin users who lost their funds on a hacked/scammed web wallet (although Save Dogemas may have itself been a scam-- I don't know and didn't follow up on it).

But if it's 700k+ Bitcoins, no way it's happening.

oscilloscope··on Joint Statement Regarding the Insolvency of Mt. Gox
For those just tuning in: at about 6pm PST Gox shut down their trading engine, but the site was still up.

There's a supposedly internal document floating around that describes Gox's insolvency plan (which many consider a hoax).

Then this joint letter which initially used the word "insolvency" in the title but was edited several minutes later.

oscilloscope··on Joint Statement Regarding the Insolvency of Mt. Gox
The first sentence has now been edited to remove the word "insolvency".

Yep. At the exchanges, you're basically buying Bitcoin credits when you send them Bitcoin. You can trade these credits for dollar credits. On a functioning exchange, you can withdraw these credits one-to-one for Bitcoin or dollars to a wallet or bank account you control.

In the future there will potentially be decentralized exchanges where a Bitcoin transaction can be a component of an exchange transaction and there is no third-party involved. But not today.

oscilloscope··on Bitcoin Builder: Trade “MtGox” BTC and “Real” BTC (and back)
MtGox has internal transfers between accounts on their trading/accounting system. These are not actual transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain.
oscilloscope··on Mt. Gox Impact Diminishes as Market Price Dissociates
If the "battleground" is the exchange value of Bitcoin, then calling it a market is not an exaggeration.
oscilloscope··on Bitcoin transaction malleability: looking at the bytes
Have any of these been confirmed? It could be related to malleability if these are test transactions that were invalidated by mutated txids.
oscilloscope··on Bitcoin transaction malleability: looking at the bytes
Most wallets only have the crudest tools to prevent identity attacks like this, such as setting a preferred address for the next payment. Frequently, you won't even see what the inputs and outputs of a transaction will be before it's broadcast to the network.
oscilloscope··on Bitcoin Exchanges Under ‘Massive and Concerted Attack’
More like 3rd. In the 8 hours since vidarh posted this, Dogecoin surpassed the Peercoin market cap. The 24h trading volume of Dogecoin is also nearly 6x that of Peercoin right now.
oscilloscope··on 4D Tesseract: Fourth Dimension Game
One can use parallel coordinates to visualize N-dimensional objects in the 2d plane. The hypercube's pretty easy to understand in the orthogonal projection, but for anything more complicated than a 24-cell, parallel coordinates really helps.
oscilloscope··on Over one billion searches were made on DuckDuckGo in 2013
DDG is much faster than Google for me. All Google services are very slow when I'm logged in. GMail, Google Search, Finance, YouTube, everything. They can take 4-8 seconds to load a page, and sometimes they hang indefinitely.

Incognito mode or a different browser brings Google back to sub-second speeds, but it's frustrating enough that I set DDG as my default so that straightforward searches resolve quickly. I switch over with !g whenever I need better search results, news, etc.

oscilloscope··on Dogewallet hacked - 21 Million Dogecoins stolen
Dogewallet had been engaged in several sketchy security practices, such as not using https. It's unsurprising that funds were stolen.

It will be interesting to see if security flaws like this cause as big a splash in the Dogecoin community, since it's sort of a big joke anyways.
