oscardelben··on Stuck in the Middle with Bruce (2001)
I posted this about 10y ago and didn't get much traction, I got an email from the mods the other day asking if I could repost, so I did.
oscardelben··on Stripe Will Pay Workers $20k to Leave New York and San Francisco
I'm curious about how companies that rely a lot on immigration to fill positions how they are going to convince people to move to the US and work from home.
oscardelben··on Stripe Will Pay Workers $20k to Leave New York and San Francisco
I think it's very rare, I've worked at Google for 8 years and I've met maybe 1 person who works from home on a somewhat regular basis.
oscardelben··on Italian Ruby
It seems fine to me, there is nothing in it that makes me think it was written by a non native speaker.
oscardelben··on Remote work has its perks, until you want a promotion
Can't speak in LA, but in Switzerland where almost no one has AC it definitely does not cool enough during the night. During the summer even if I keep the windows closed all day I cannot get the temperature below 26-27 degrees. The main difference though is that I was not trying to work in this conditions as my office had AC.
oscardelben··on India: Google engineer latest victim of mob lynchings fueled by WhatsApp rumors
According to the article, it's 25 people having being killed since the beginning of the year because of misinformation spread through whatsapp. It seems like it should be a big deal for the company.
oscardelben··on Software Engineering at Google
You definitely need to tell your manager though.

EDIT: one personal example is at some point I took some external classes and used 20℅ time for it. But most cases are for developing some sort of tools or product.

oscardelben··on Ask HN: Thinking of moving to Europe from USA
Depends where you are. You'll probably make way more in Switzerland than in the US for equivalent positions.
oscardelben··on German Cities Are Solving the Age-Old Public Toilet Problem
I think you'll find that mentally ill people are treated differently in Europe, that would be a necessary first step of your want to do something similar in sf.
oscardelben··on Concerns for global spread of Zika mean Rio de Janeiro Olympics must not proceed
This is not how statistics work. You can't generalize from just your personal experience.
oscardelben··on We're hearing about troubles at Nest
I also never had one in Europe outside of the UK.
oscardelben··on Why expat Americans are giving up their passports

Have you ever heard of Italia.it?
oscardelben··on NSA Technology Transfer Program – 2014 Technology Catalog [pdf]
One of their offering under technology is converting computer programs with loops to ones without loops. Can anyone help me understand what the point of that is?
oscardelben··on What Do Animals See in a Mirror?
Would you?
oscardelben··on The Deadliest Animal in the World
Depends on the language I guess? In italian we only use mosca.
oscardelben··on How Statisticians Could Help Find That Missing Plane
Thanks for pointing that out.
oscardelben··on How Statisticians Could Help Find That Missing Plane
Last I heard they recruited a witch.
oscardelben··on How Statisticians Could Help Find That Missing Plane
I'd like to disagree with that. If your priori are particularly bad then you should expect your estimates to change quickly based on new evidence.
oscardelben··on Atom
Where did you get that impression from?
oscardelben··on This Man's $600K Facebook Disaster Is a Warning For All Small Businesses
> We immediately stopped the campaign and reached out to FB via a form (they have no email nor telephone) telling them about the issue, we included screenshots and other relevant information. We never heard from Facebook.

How is that even legal?

oscardelben··on Study: Believing You’ve Slept Well, Even if You Haven’t, Improves Performance
There is some other research that suggests that placebo works even when you know it's placebo.
oscardelben··on Ask HN: Help. I need to go away from here
-1 on start your own consultancy in Italy. Taxes will kill you. It's not worth it.
oscardelben··on Ask HN: Help. I need to go away from here
You can go to the US with a J1 visa until you finish your studies but it's hard. I would suggest finding something in London or Berlin first. There is also lots of remote work too. Personally, what I did to get out of there is creating an online identity (github, LinkedIn) and after a while you will start receiving offers. I'd also recommend applying to the hiring threads here on hn. That worked pretty well for me in the past.
oscardelben··on Real Men Go to Sleep
I worked in both, and while I see more people taking naps here in London, they definitely take naps in MTV too!
oscardelben··on Lavabit needs your help to fight for the right to keep emails private
I'm not sure convincing my government would make any difference since I'm connecting to an american server right now just to type this (I'm also working in the US). It's like saying that if you're connecting to a german server and they're violating your privacy then you should fill a complaint with your own government.
oscardelben··on Lavabit needs your help to fight for the right to keep emails private
One thing that really puts me off is the emphasis on protecting privacy for american people. Why should privacy be a luxury of people who just happened to be born in a particular piece of land? Why is it ok to spy on everyone else?
oscardelben··on Web development in C: Crazy?
You should have used lisp :p
oscardelben··on English has been my pain for 15 years
So, for most people the most efficient learning aid is to spend a few years abroad. A teacher helps, but you need to talk with and listen to lots and lots of different people. There is no way you'll become fluent in a foreign language without spending time there, talking with people for multiple hours a day. Get a job abroad, and you'll get better quickly.

> Watching movies and tv series without subtitles also helps tremendously. In Italy this is even worse, because they don't just add subtitles, they usually dub the whole thing with Italian actors

Except that if you hear a word in italian you can look it up easily because it's written the way it's spoken. On the other hand, I still have a very hard time looking up a word I head in English.
