Or lower.
oscardelben··on Nokia to developers: no Qt for Windows Phone development
Because Objective-C is far from being an horror language, but perhaps your impression (and so mine) is conditioned by your past experience with your languages of choice.
oscardelben··on Are you working for github yet?
Part of the hires they did was for some new projects (I think iphone related). I'm very happy for the new hires, it must be great to work there.

oscardelben··on US Manufacturing Isn't Dead, But its Jobs Are
I'm a non-native English speaker as well. More than this specific example I hate when someone uses then instead of than, because it often makes the sentence hard to understand.
oscardelben··on Turn off the clock on your menu bar
You may want to give the "Pomodoro technique a try"
oscardelben··on Paypal's fraud prevention routine does it again
Note that when your account gets limited, your customers get an email which basically says that you are suspicious, and you can't accept any new payment until you get it fixed. I highly recommend that you DON'T launch with paypal unless you have all the documentation sorted out. And no, I don't know what you should do exactly.
oscardelben··on Today, Web Development Sucks
> "proven paradigms" is a ridiculous term by itself in software development, putting it in web development context just makes it dumber. If desktop apps are so good, then how come web apps are still around? There is a reason why people still prefer jQuery over many of those.

I'm not sure usage counts are an indicator of quality. I bet the majority of javascript developers use jQuery because it's what everyone else is using, similar to why they're using php for writing their apps.

I'm not saying that jQuery is bad, just that usage counts is often a bad indicator.

oscardelben··on Power user replacements for OS X default apps
I think it comes down to personal preferences.

I've tried several times to switch to Chrome, but for me Safari is better. For example I like how I can access bookmarks from hotkeys.

Same for textedit and terminal, I can't think of any reason to switch, and I've tried several alternatives.

oscardelben··on Poll: What is your personal annual income?
I think the norm is around 1400 euros, an upper salary may be 2000 euros or 3000 if you're very lucky. If you're self employed (like me) you also pay half in taxes.

Edit: as an example, I have difficulties charing more than 20-25 euros/hour here, but for the same jobs I charge 80-100 dollars/hour when I work for the USA.

oscardelben··on Poll: What is your personal annual income?
Really? I see the majority of people here are in the 100-250 range, but here in Italy I know nobody in that range for tech jobs, and I expect it's the same in western Europe.

Edit: I see that the ranges proposed are slightly different, but it's still true that the majority of employees here earn less than 50k

oscardelben··on [dead]
Yes, but it's not like if you stop for one day then the rest of the world gets ahead of you. If that's the case either you're working on something to be the first (nothing against that), or you are solving the wrong problem to begin with.
oscardelben··on [dead]
> One thing is for sure, every time you do that the rest of the world gets ahead of you by a full day.

Employers who have people working on their factories 16 hours per day must think the same thing.

oscardelben··on Pivotal Tracker will no longer be free in 6 months
I know many people here charge $150/hour. 15k/week for two persons working 40 hour each is about $187/hour which doesn't look unrealistic to me. That's not to say they're cheap, they certainly aren't, but if you consider that a company has many expenses beside employees salaries then it's not that high.

Perhaps the biggest thing here is that you must hire a pair, so it actually comes to about $374/h, but if it's true that you get the job much more quickly with a pair then I don't see the issue.

oscardelben··on Website calculates how your life might be like in another country
I'm surprised that longevity in the US is lower than many other countries (the same is true for Italy as well). I wonder if the food industry and the obesity problem contributed to this problem.
oscardelben··on On downloading books: “Free” Books Aren’t Free
Actually you can get it faster by downloading it from your kindle.
oscardelben··on As predicted on HN: Kindle Lending Club
The site returns a lot of 500 errors randomly. I requested to borrow a book but it's not clear wherever my request succeeded or not. It looks like this website was being made in a rush.
oscardelben··on Request HN: Can We have a Private Messaging Feature in HN?
In your case, you could start by putting your email address in your profile in the about section, that's why we've been contacting each other so far.
oscardelben··on Chernobyl: Environmental dead zone or eco-haven?
If you search on youtube for Pripyat, there are many videos available that shows you how's the city now.
oscardelben··on Stolen laptop contains cancer research data
People need to learn the basics of working with a computer. I can't imagine working for years on an important project without any backup system whatsoever. Getting your computer stolen is only one of the tens of the possible scenarios of things that could happen.
oscardelben··on The Italian entrepreneur who moved his team and got funded in 19 days
I don't live in Venice ;)

Edit: but even if I move to a bigger city, like Milan for example, what's the point if there are no money to fund startups?

oscardelben··on The Italian entrepreneur who moved his team and got funded in 19 days
Italy is a place with many talents, but that's not enough, for two reasons at least.

First: why should I stay here when people have no money to pay me for my talent?

Second: let's say that I want to start a startup, it's extremely hard to find talented people near you. I live in a relatively small city, which with the province makes about 500k persons I think, and I know nobody who knows rails well. And we're talking about rails, what about Clojure, Objective c, etc.

Maybe there are good people out there, but for cultural reasons you don't even know they exist.

oscardelben··on Measuring hourly snowfall with a webcam and PHP
A bit ot, but is there a standard way to measure things? (I'm thinking about inches vs cm, or gallons vs liters).
oscardelben··on Ask HN: What makes a blog great?
I think writing stuff that makes people either think or change their habits. At least that's my experience with my blog.

oscardelben··on Oooh - I'd kill for a four day week...
I don't know, I'm italian and people here don't know English, yes a few do, but it's still the exception. I've also just lived 6 months in Madrid and it's even worse. I know that countries in the north of Europe are better in this sense but I see Greece to be more like Italy and Spain education than say, Netherlands education.
oscardelben··on Oooh - I'd kill for a four day week...
Don't worry about the past. What can you do from now on with the extra time?
oscardelben··on [dead]
I'm going to give you some quick advices:

in page optimization is important, use well your url and your h1 tag. Other than that, what really is important is the number and quality of links that you get from other websites, and the anchor text they use.

So for example if you want to rank for "web development", you need to get a lot of organic links from people with the text "web development".

Of course there are many other factors, but this is the essential.
