orwin··on QBittorrent breaks out of sandbox to commit crimes
In that case, it vastly more productive to say : 'I do believe this is false/poorly presented/a gross generalisation, and would like you to prove me wrong by citing sources'. At least you do not hide behind the "I'm just asking questions", which read as disingenuous like I said, mostly because it's overused rethoric.
orwin··on QBittorrent breaks out of sandbox to commit crimes
The issue with the "i'm just asking questions" is that it is overused by disingenuous (i started writing nefarious but i think you can be nefarious but mean good, whereas people who do this _always_ mean to trick other humans) people. So nowadays, if you want to go ask a question to go further on a topic because you're interested in it, you need to add a preamble that explain. See:

"How did ancient egyptian managed to cut rock that cleanly without modern tools?"

vs

"I'm very interested in old tools and techniques, do any of you have resources about how Egyptian used to cut granite?"

Sadly, this is the state of the internet, because some people can't be genuine (probably think it's a weakness or something dumb), now everybody assume the worst of everybody else.

To me, the divide Twitter/Bluesky is the divide between terminally only idiots and terminally online simpletons (you decide which is which). Decent people are on neither.
orwin··on AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems
I think people on this website have a way, way to high opinion of themselves. Barring a few exceptions, we are middling developers, or way worse than this. Just read the comments from a year or twoon how chatgpt4.5 is the best at coding or how Claude sonnet 4 is better than a lot of Devs... At least I don't have imposter syndrome anymore.
orwin··on AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems
It just takes forever now. The understanding is lower, the effort is lower, and frankly, I think the interest is lower too. I might be in the last generation who truly had fun working on a 'shrodinger' bug.
orwin··on Burnt out on a three-day week
I would never advise anyone to get mental health advice from a computer, but if you're contemplating using the service of those 'life coach', yeah, consider using an AI. Even Emacs' therapist.

I've read in this thread that Texas removed provisions for a mandatory hydration/sunscreen break after 4 hours of work.

orwin··on Japan halves speed limit to 30km/h on all narrow city streets
Going 60 you need to have a _really_ good bike and want to go that fast. I barely manage to keep 30 for more than 20 minutes, and I would consider myself an average cyclist on an above average bike.
orwin··on Mamdani bans AI in NYC schools
You should try to read books on the luddite movement (or use an AI to dive into the specifics I guess) before trying to use it to disparage someone. As it stands, to me the luddites were pragmatic workers who stood up for themselves, so it is quite a compliment.
orwin··on Mamdani Bans AI in NYC Schools
I'm pretty sure we ran these experiments in France in the late 80s/early 90s, it was pretty clear that exposure to real computers was useless in elementary school, and even in middle school technology teachers weren't a big fans of teaching computer skills before 14 (basically around the same time as they taught tin soldering).
orwin··on Ask HN: How do you survive a job you hate which is slowly making you sick?
If you don't want to quit, another way is trying to hire at least a developer who have the same PoV as you do, and is eager to improve. Tbh reading the second paragraph I thought 'thats such an interesting mission, I wish I could help him' (I'm _very_ happy with my current mission though, I'm not asking for a job to be clear). Find someone who thinks the same. Maybe your school alumnis? That's where I would check.

Being alone is what is truly demotivating imho, and even my job where I like the mission, the company culture and I like the juniors at a personal level, I would have quit or at least started to check out and stop caring if not for the other senior in the team.

Also, you can care about the mission w/o caring about the company and the management, and refuse the additional pression (easier to say than to do, It took me half a decade, a nasty manager and a psychologist to learn to say no).

Good luck, take care of yourself, I like the part of your personality that leaks through your writing, you seems like a good person, keep it that way.

It's ok, it is slightly llm-like but not in the worst way, like it was edited after. You aren't Claude at least.

orwin··on AI Can Make You Suck Faster Too
I now started to us AI to help review my juniors PRs, because I couldn't keep up with the amount of code they ship. It started poorly, but now I have my method: I first read the code and flag the lines I'm not sure about, then ask any frontier model (I like Claude here for analysis, even if I don't use it for the rest) to explain the PR and to put effort on the parts I flagged (basically explain in detail the code, not only the PR), and to search through the libraries. Sometimes it notices something I would have missed (like missing an 'order_by' or off by one errors, because the underlying lib wasn't coded like the original AI pretended it was).

I also changed the way I do review because it has been more than a year and the juniors/new hire are still lost, wether on domain knowledge for the older new hire, or just capabilities for the juniors, and discussing with other departments, it's the same for like 95% of them. Now, rather than correcting the PR or adding a request for change, I add a whole unit/functional test to the PR and let that as an exercise to pass the test. They can use AI but I tell them to try to find what part of the code doesn't work before generating the fix, hopefully they'll take ownership of the code if I keep doing that.

orwin··on Since it was stripped of planetary status, Pluto’s defenders have been fighting
Why 1000 km radius? I know that 1000k diameter might be important for cold bodies to keep their equilibrium, but what does 1000km radius give?

Because honestly anybody who played stuff like KSP RSS or any space game taking place in our solar system represented at scale with adequat orbit weirdness probably told themselves "that's Pluto? Ok i get it, not a planet".

I only know a little about this subject, but I was a youth camp counselor for 8 years, 6 of them specialized in 3-6yo.

I agree with the author on the '2yo is too young' point. Obviously it depends on the children, we are all different, but I have noticed that even some early 3yo have trouble 'socializing' (or what count as socializing at this age, before ~4-5 yo, I.e stealing from each other, fighting over the stolen objects, then learning to share.).

I also agree that we don't know much, but: I would 100% advise every parent to attend least send their children to a youth camp during summer around 5-6yo (4 even if you think he is early in his development). If the counselor is great, you will get back children who have sung with other for a week (once two of my charges started harmonizing by themselves, without me prompting them to, this was great), learn enough knots to impress you (especially considering the focus and dexterity of a 4yo child), and tell you stories about building homes for forest fairies. And even if the counselor isn't _that_ great (I will stop giving myself flowers someday, today's not the day though), your child will socialise for a week, probably learn interesting stuff (and probably sing too, this is like counselor 101).

> and the left thinks it's on corporations (not themselves)

Of course... Every year where the consequences weren't in sight, saying we should consume less, buy less, eat less meat, I have been called 'degrowther' and it has been explained to me that I would increase human suffering because it would reduce the economy size. Ok, fair, I just wanted to help future human, but if you don't plan to have any, you do you.

Now I'm told I think it's corporations that should fix it. Of course.

By the way, I still think it's consumerism (and consumption capitalism) the reason we can't deal with the issue. That corporations are the biggest voice that push for this system is incidental, but yes, breaking big corps in smaller entities would probably help solve the problem. A bit too late now, but better than never.

Also, who on the left think that corpos will do anything to help humanity? Really? I think at most, some thinks it's the government to do everything but corpo? Really? Your friends on the left seems to me very, very much in the center, center right to be exact.

orwin··on You Know GDPR Is Good Based on Who Hates It
I won't shittalk much, but i had to "lobby" around the time GDPR was in the work, probably right after the vote, but before it was implemented (it was more to discuss about hosting health data, HDS in french), and it came up because the CNIL guys were here too (french watchdog tasked to implement most of GDPR in france. Basically EU draft laws, but each country decide how they apply). While the technical guy were extremely competent (surprisingly so, i think he might one of the 3 engineer i've discussed with who impressed me the most, and i've talked with someone who worked on netscape and firefox in the 90s, as well as the man behind scikit-learn). i got the distinct impression that no one understood the law, even (very surprisingly also) lawyers, and it felt really, really weird. Also they didn't seems to understand why it was important (part of our speech was based on the GDPR and the reason it existed)

In the end i think Azure got to host of all French health data a year later despite the lobbying. Maybe with how the US look with Trump at the helm it will change (to be clear, it was a really weird lobbying in any case, our project was to test pseudonymation algorithms (and probably others) made by our researchers on our platform before selling them to scaleway or OVH depending on who won the project)

orwin··on Aptera announces a $44M to design and build a solar electric vehicle
My mum will buy one to work (home nurse) while keeping her big car around for larger travel. Especially with gas prices, I think you will see those more and more.
orwin··on Aptera announces a $44M to design and build a solar electric vehicle
From someone with a boat and solar panels: cheap solar panels needs cooling, so space between the panels and the stuff they are stuck one. This reduces aerodynamics a lot, which isn't an issue with something going 8 knots max, but I have a friend with a trimaran whose solar panels reduce his max speed of 20 knot to 18 (38kmh -> 33.5), which is why he decided to remove them from his amas and have movable solar panel instead (he put them when he beach or stay at a mooring). My next boat will be a tri too, I just have to find half a million somewhere.
orwin··on The internet is kind of a predatory cesspit now
Not OP, and I will assume you ask about making irl friends online: niche multiplayer videogames always were the best way to make irl friends. I still have a few friends from a web game where you had to coordinate 5-10 people for ~1h a day (and enemies could counter if they chose to connect around the same time) that I played from 2004 to 2013 (with breaks in between). Later it has mostly Hoi4 and civ6 (which are now less niche, but the mp communities used to be extremely niche before ~2020) (civ6 still is). I have a friend who I've met through another because they played on a SWTOR roleplay server together. Also, now that I remember, a friend of mine turned 40 a year ago, and I was surprised of the younger friends (less than 30) he made. They told me they met through WoW classic, managed to find out they lived close from each other, and decided to hang out/play RPGs (pen and paper) together.

orwin··on US Government designates host of noblogs.org a "global terrorist"
Fascists are just against the rule of law. They designed a multi tiered system where they have more rights than the one they judge inferior. An antifascist is someone who fights against fascists, either violently or, more often, through documenting of fascist groups, taking pictures and counter protesting.
orwin··on Air Conditioning Is Not a Luxury, It Is a Necessity
At least in France, almost all excess deaths were in hospitals and retirement homes. The rest were workers. And we had more heat than Germany. Yes, it is a necessity in some places (schools, nursing homes, hospitals). an AC at home is a luxury. Which, great if you can afford it.
orwin··on Gao: One in four f-35s can fly all missions readiness
Do any of you have any idea of what is happening? is this caused by the new software (i remember you had a rewrite from TR1 to TR2, was it good?)?

disclaimer: I admit i am not a huge fan of the f35 (and especially f35B) because i think VTOL is a gadget which inclusion cost too much in capability, especially when a stealth aircraft have naturally more issues to cool itself, and made the overall design more challenging and worse than what could have been. I still think it is the most capable multirole today, still have the most complete set of EW equipment and its nose size allows a lot of range for its radar. But it is worth it if you can only fly half?

orwin··on US removes Syria from terrorism sponsor list, lifting major investment obstacle
I'm not saying Atatürk stabilized his country by genociding and massacring, I'm saying the league of nations decided that it was an acceptable cost for a leader who seemed stable to avoid a second balkanization.

My point is that I would rather have the current leader in Syria than an Isis that use it as a base for transnational terrorism (like lybia was under Ghadafi) or a group of uneducated cunts like the current Taliban leadership that terrorise most of the population. The best would have been no civil war at all, and a democratic transition. We don't have that.

The current leader is violent and undemocratic, he doesn't deserve the position he have.

Nevertheless, cutting Syria off, or worse, triggering a new civil war because we don't like him and we are afraid of his politics before we actually see his politics is idiotic. Especially since his policies have evolved to something way less integrist and way more legalist (hence my comment on no terror attacks), which, imho and maybe I'm wrong, is probably the best chance for an islamic administration to be part of the modern world (the best scenario would be a secular government: we wouldn't have that in Syria even if the SDF won). Let's give Syrians a chance.

No, I don't like the style, but author is right here, you cannot secure insecure design. It needs to be reworked from scratch.
