orwin··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
At least not if from the EU.
orwin··on AI borrowers face tough sell in risky corners of US credit market
We have now multiple studies in France that show that R&D tax credits do not have any meaningful impact on actual research and new patent, and show that they have the most impact on hiring for 'PME' (small and medium companies) per euro credited.

I'm not against tax breaks for R&D, but they shouldn't benefit Facebook.

orwin··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
Not really raised to hate the US, but they do learn in school that the sarin Saddam Hussein used on their parents and grandparents were from US stocks. Which is factually true, even if used as propaganda.

Houthis used to only attack Israeli ships, because of their truce with the Saudis. Now that their diplomats got bombed at an airport, they are attacking Saudi ships, including tankers, too.

Against GP point though: the Houthis probably won't attack non-saudi, non-israeli vessels anytime soon, so it shouldn't change the route so much.

orwin··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
> Automatic weapons ban lifted

Weirdly, you still have a ban on sniper rifles and on AP rounds.

orwin··on Nicholas Polson has authored 258 academic papers in 2026 so far
I went to a "town hall" at my company last friday, the slides were all obviously AI-generated, the text was too, without anybody proofreading it.

How do i know? Because i doubt "Access&Identity will help us push forward the productivity of all collaborators" was what the team responsible for the prompt wanted to say.

orwin··on America.gov
Only conservative do. Some old one do not, but they're the exception.
orwin··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
And they are very expensive to refine compared to Brent.
orwin··on US Forces Exit Iraq
(they still had some US-made biological weapons to be fair)
orwin··on Deutsche Bahn "joke" is no longer funny
BTW: Germany have fewer trains than France if you take into account Paris RER and transilien.
orwin··on AI companies in race to demonstrate their model most threatening to humanity
Pretty sure you can check where Chinese government subsidies goes, and AI companies are not the target. Are they benefitting from Chinese government subsidies to powerplants and semiconductors? Yes, of course, but they don't benefit from direct help.
orwin··on Tells of a Slop UI
Huge issue in slop comments.

And btw, if you have slop comments in your PR, you'll get a review from an agent (my company pay for it). I won't bother to read if you didn't bother either.

orwin··on Earth is tearing apart beneath the Pacific Northwest
I'm not anti AI-text, especially if it's technical, but come on, my brain tried to escape my skull reading the first few sentences. Can some effort be made at least to make reading palatable? if it's AI writing, why not just prompt it to go to the point and aoivd trying to sound clever while being annoying to read? I think every article generator should put an absolute "do not use metaphores: you're very bad at it and it is off-putting" in their agent.md, at the very least.
orwin··on CEO of Mistral: AI is software. It can be controlled
Because we were sold ASI for Sonnet 4.8. the for Gpt 5.3. then itvwas Astra and Fable. I use AI coding agents. Maybe I don't have access to SOTA, but I use the closest models that were supposed to be great. They're not. They still need to compact the context. They're still susceptible to poisoning. You still need to restart them from a memory file to clean up the context, and the only way to use agents 'swarm' is to give them a very short life.

I don't think my position is the one that needs arguments tbh. I'm even lowering my standards, moving my goalposts closer to the AGI crowd. I will admit we've reached AGI when a LLM can play a 1800 elo FIDE (not 1800 on a fake AI only elo rating) with a specialized harness made by a human. Previously I insisted the specialized harness had to be written without human supervision, now I don't care.

orwin··on CEO of Mistral: AI is software. It can be controlled
It's in the article, no? Mistral's new idea to control AIs? To give them a state basically? No one discuss the idea here, weirdly.
orwin··on Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
Clearly, Luigi found a far more effective way.
orwin··on Where's the Beef?: The lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't
I'm pretty sure it's just the taste of meat that the author didn't like. My half-sister don't eat most meat for taste reasons, and the nausea after tasting beef the author describe sound exactly like her reactions.
orwin··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
I don't understand why people are so bullish about SMRs. 25 years ago we were trying to increase reactor size and testing breeders, no we want smaller reactors, for what reason?
orwin··on Netherlands bracing for potentially devastating US sanctions against the ICC
The first gulf war, the one that happened 4 years after the US government sold Iraq war helicopters very cheaply, and help them improve their chemical weapons to use against Iran. Two years after it gave Iraq targets for their brand new cyclosarin weapons, as well as political support to prevent Iraq from loosing.
orwin··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
We're not talking about unit tests here. We're talking about data structure and code complexity.
orwin··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
Lol no. Just get your company quality gates and put it in the Claude.md.

I guarantee you will pass the gate, and the code will still be dumb, except now you'll spend 10x the tokens.

orwin··on US troop deaths during Iran war exceed Pentagon count by at least four
No women and no children worked in salt mines. Salt mines were often temporary punishment or permanent punishment akin to a death sentence for slaves and captured enemies. The way Belgian/German concentration camps were managed in Africa was new. And paved the way to Hitler.

And I don't want to poorly paraphrase Aimé Cesaire, so I'm taking a translated quote: 'What he cannot forgive Hitler for is not crime in itself, the crime against man, it is not the humiliation of man as such, it is the crime against the white man, the humiliation of the white man, and the fact that he applied to Europe colonialist procedures which until then had been reserved exclusively for the Arabs of Algeria, the coolies of India, and the blacks of Africa.'

orwin··on Uber arbitration award over Emily Normandin-Parker’s death
(in my country, to get a bus driver license, you have to go through training that explain how to act in weird situation, how to identify dangers and which danger to prefer. You have a whole hour about always stopping at a safe place (parking, bus stop, red lignt, stop sign) before getting involved with anything that happen inside)

Untrue for sails, untrue for dinghys, untrue for foils, because price discrimination. I thought it might have been true for catamaran, but I looked it up and it seems that Hobie Cat 16 are still more popular than Nacras for some inimaginable reason, as for once it's not price related.

If I go on another subject I invested time in, RPGs, D&D is the most popular system while inferior imho to a lot of others. Even if we have to keep the very flawed d20 system, the way forgotten chronicles handles everything is superior (and if in your bad opinion it's not the case because weirdly you like the class system, you probably would prefer pathfinder instead of dnd).

orwin··on US troop deaths during Iran war exceed Pentagon count by at least four
I'm just talking about the tactics the Nazis use and the work camps. Huge inspiration from Belgian Congo, Madagascar "tache d'huile" tactics and the German Mozambican work camps into genocide around WW1.
orwin··on War may be coming. Are we psychologically ready?
> I read an article in early 2000 that stipulated that EU and USA are borrowing so much money that eventually they will HAVE TO recoup through war, Conquering Russia.

Lol. Not how money, nor borrowing as a nation-state works. Probably from a trader-adjascent idiot who thinks he understands econ 101 because his qwants makes him money. Macro-econ is probably the subject with the biggest dunning-kruger syndrome you can find, so I advise you to either read a lot (and I do mean a lot), catch up at least to the bachelor level and continue reading econ books (written by economists PhD, not wall street insiders that journalist claims are economists), or just avoid the field completely and never believe anything an 'economist' write or say on TV, if he/she isn't a PhD.

orwin··on US troop deaths during Iran war exceed Pentagon count by at least four
(not really, it was more from how French, Belgians and Germans treated the African population they occupied) (not a fan of the US but I have to defend them here)
orwin··on US Military had close call after using AI for hallucinated intelligence report
Yes, a common view at the time was that the only de-escalation possible would have been through workers cooperation, which is why so much of the Marxist flank of the SFIO argued in favour of pacifism: to buy time for the workers to unite.

Which probably wouldn't have worked, but maybe it could have been a much, much smaller conflict.

orwin··on The US 'Kill Chain' That Destroyed an Iranian School
I don't care about whataboutism much, so I won't argue with you on your points, but know that it seems a large part of the 1200 killed during October 7th were killed by the Hannibal doctrine, which for the first time was applied to Israeli civilians.
