orph··on Dropbox acquires Hackpad (YC W12)
Luckily Hackpad isn't going anywhere so you can go ahead and sign up to try it out :)
orph··on Man Walks Nearly 3000 Miles Through China
I calculate my life saving in terms of years I can spend walking non-stop. At ~20 years worth, I'll begin.

After soloing Annapurna and GR20 and many US national parks, walking is the only thing I really want to do with my life.

orph··on Are The Techno Riche Really Ruining San Francisco? Yes, Says Rebecca Solnit
Ellis Act is tricky. It's threatened far more than it's executed. That's because it bad for renter credit (supposedly) to have an eviction and it imposes a bunch of random restrictions on the owner. So it gets threatened and then occupants take a payout and move out quietly.
orph··on Britain’s Ministry of Nudges
This already happens today in the form of PSA and the Ad Council. See http://www.adcouncil.org/Our-Work/Current-Work for a sampling.
orph··on Announcing App.net Broadcast
The difference is that you already have Facebook installed and don't "need only to download the free App.net app for iOS or Android."
orph··on Two Harvard University Alumni Win Salesforce $1M Hackathon Prize
major congrats to turian and thom!
orph··on Smoke alarms, fingerprint readers - why the HN community gets it wrong
I hope HN continues to treat great new ideas with muted ambivalence. Reading articles with >10 comments is a waste of time.
orph··on After switching 37K PCs to Ubuntu, FAF says open source cuts costs 40%
Give me a break. This is a single data point, in an industry (and country!) not known for its efficiency.
orph··on Java to Scala converter
Would love the opposite, a scala -> java converter.
orph··on A different way of looking at responsive design: Intention.js
So you'd have to refresh the page when you change phone orientation from portrait to landscape?
orph··on Help, I want to quit the startup I founded
I know how you feel. Txt me when you need an ear. We'll hang out, get drunk. 415-810-4267.
orph··on Announcing Xamarin 2.0
Ubuntu removed Tomboy from their default install due to Mono dependency. Tomboy is still a well used and liked application on Linux desktops. Just one example of many great apps "killed" that I am most familiar with.
orph··on Coroutine Event Loops in Javascript
I wrote this Erlang-in-Javascript API 5 years ago using coroutines: http://beatniksoftware.com/erjs/. I'm not holding my breath for pervasive `yield` support.
orph··on HackPad is expanding its reach, maybe even to the White House
Check out https://hackpad.com/qlMMTiNuRl6#10-Reasons-Hackpad-is-Better... for some highlights.
orph··on HackPad is expanding its reach, maybe even to the White House
We have really tight jeans. Like really tight.
orph··on Amazon EC2 currently down. Affecting Heroku, Reddit, Others
Adding insult to injury: when trying to view instances in the console I now only see "Rate limit exceeded".
orph··on YC W12 Shoptiques PR Hack
I don't get it. The site is obviously targetted at women, why send out booth bunnies to hug men? In pink t-shirts no less, instead of trendy boutique fashion?
orph··on Ask HN: What's the best live blogging/etherpad-like service?
hackpad op here. give me a ping, i think we can support you.
orph··on What We Should Have Said To PG
How is this different from Hackpad (YCW12)?
orph··on Growth Hacker is the New VP Marketing - Andrew Chen
Well actually, "doing something clever" is damn close to the origin of the word.
orph··on Another EC2 outage (yet AWS dashboard says no error)
Back now. My logs show it was down from 2:23 to 2:41.
orph··on Another EC2 outage (yet AWS dashboard says no error)
At least I wasn't imagining it.
orph··on David Beazley Keynote at PyCon (Live Notes)
There's great notes for a lot of other PyCon talks here: https://hackpad.com/LQgZLPeokTB#PyCon-2012-Notes
orph··on A Better Live Wiki: HackPad (YC W12) at SXSW
We just rolled out code highlighting and (very alpha) inline LaTeX support! Learn about those here: https://hackpad.com/o9ey5hjlyBQ#Hackpad-Code-Syntax-Hilighti... and here: https://hackpad.com/gcErGj2WsQr#Embedded-LaTeX
orph··on [dead]
I don't see what the big deal is. He's a completely endearing a lovable guy if a bit eccentric, just like all the best in our field. I loved listening to his demo video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAr-xYtBFbY), it had me smiling all the way through.

His joy of experience in knowledge and production and problem solving is what hooked me on computers in the first place.

If you think he's crazy, you should go see Stallman talk.

orph··on Show HN: HackPad is the best wiki ever
We don't store Google contacts on disk, so they will disappear with a couple days of account inactivity.
orph··on Show HN: HackPad is the best wiki ever
This just hides the sign in modal dialog. Your changes are not saved until you sign in.

It's totally awesome that you're poking around in the code :)

orph··on Show HN: HackPad is the best wiki ever
This is probably an IE bug?
orph··on Why every programmer should have a Tiddlywiki
I wrote a personal wiki for Linux called Tomboy.

I've been working on Hackpad.com lately. It's a realtime wiki based on Etherpad. Pads are private by default, and you can invite people to edit them later.

I think it's better than tiddlywiki. Why not try it out?

orph··on Facebook is Big and Boring
Are you kidding me? Facebook just contributed to toppling a dictatorship in Egypt.

We are still seeing the rippling effects that this form of social interaction brings to people's lives. I don't think that's boring at all.
