orokusaki··on Complaint filed against Irish subsidiaries of Apple, Facebook
Sure, but what if I place a camera on each side of your property (outside the property line) of your house, pointing to the edge of your property, then use your tax dollars to pay employees to watch you on the cameras every time you leave your property? Would you enjoy that? If not, why would you put up with it? It's your state, not the government's state. The government are your employees, not your owners, so you have to decide which rights you want, not just which rights can still be defended by existing laws.
orokusaki··on Complaint filed against Irish subsidiaries of Apple, Facebook
Let me see if I understand this correctly. It's OK for the state to have 120 cameras on each street corner watching your every move (see London), but it's not OK to share your Facebook posts?

Disclaimer: I'm very much against any invasion of privacy, and am only being facetious to point out the obvious, which is that people should stand up for their rights when it becomes obvious, not just when it becomes sensational news

orokusaki··on AWS: We’ll go to court to fight government requests for data
Ha, this coming from the same company that is helping the CIA build a 600 million dollar data center for spying...
orokusaki··on Poll: What Language would/do you use to build a web application
I'd say Python handles package management better than just about anything else, period.

Regarding "whitespace"... best stick with PHP or Perl.

orokusaki··on Ask HN: How do you get a “PhD required” job without a PhD?
In other words, do what you love and do it well, and don't ever let "papers, please" get in your way.
orokusaki··on Ask HN: How do you get a “PhD required” job without a PhD?
FWIW, I won't bother with anybody in my life that requires a degree for anything, even teaching. Having a degree for something is, IMHO, no better than having a JD Power & Associates award, which is not very valuable. Now, are there countless people with PhDs who are terrific and very intelligent? Yes. Are they terrific and very intelligent because they received degrees? No, and furthermore, they'll probably achieve less than their drop-out counterparts (e.g., Steve Jobs, Bill Gates) or their "bad student" counterparts (e.g., Albert Einstein). Even Napoleon Bonaparte dropped out of Berkley at age 22... just making sure you were paying attention :)
orokusaki··on NSA admits listening to U.S. phone calls without warrants
Please, somebody - who knows the URL (or the HN post) wherein the guy (IIRC, a lawyer) states the 10 things the government will do to reduce the fallout from this? I'm totally freaked out because the guy was right, down to the last step, so far. One of them was, "They'll admit to something not as bad" (as a method of deflection - and think about it, most people view "listening" as something that won't affect them directly, unless the NSA hired about 250k more employees just for this task), one of them was that the government will say they were within the law (which is contradictory, of course) - happened here: http://techcrunch.com/2013/06/16/u-s-government-denies-repor... and 2 more of the steps happened in the past few days. I want to find that article, so I can spread it to everyone know I know (about 10 people :)

Thanks orokusaki

orokusaki··on Poll: What Language would/do you use to build a web application
Python, because Python rocks! No, seriously, if you haven't tried Python, try it. It's getting better every year.
orokusaki··on Toxic workplace, what do I do?
This sounds like pretty much every software project/team that's managed by a large company (or a subsidiary thereof).
orokusaki··on HN: What's the coolest new tech that isn't popular now but will be in a year?
Wetware to hardware interfaces, no joke.

There is many a company working on what will inevitably result in very rudimentary mind-reading machines within the next few years, and the early stages of these techs will surely be "cool" next year.

orokusaki··on HN: What's the coolest new tech that isn't popular now but will be in a year?
I think Bitcoin was considered cool circa early 2011. It can almost be considered mainstream, if not for that little fact that Fox News, et al define what is commonly known as "mainstream".
orokusaki··on Hacker News is depressing
Exactly.

Otherwise, include a license with your work, state that it is copyrighted, and still expect people to say whatever they want about you or it... Or, put it on your own private network, known as Not-The-Internet.

orokusaki··on Hacker News is depressing
The Internet is not yours. If you put content on the PUBLIC Internet, consider yourself to be consenting to any abuse the Internet as a whole wishes to dish out in return.
orokusaki··on Hacker News is depressing
Why does anyone care whether one group of people (e.g., women) wants to participate? I love how the antithesis of "equality" and "fairness" is always creeping its way into every sector under the misnomer of the latter two.

"Here, be fair to everyone by limiting what you say so that women can participate."
If you want to participate in a community, do so, otherwise don't. A community is an emergent whole comprised of the free will of its constituents, not some inorganic machine that should be influenced by special interest groups (e.g., <XYZ group>'s Rights Advocacy).

TL;DR - If you don't like our community, go the fuck away or make your own "community" wherein your dogma can be enforced.

Alt TL;DR - If you love something let it go...

orokusaki··on A Saudi Arabia Telecom's Surveillance Pitch
At the risk of sounding paranoid, if I were Moxie, I'd be on the lookout for sure :/ when you get into this sort of thing, not to mention the money involved, you're running serious risk of being "cancered" to death.

Time to ban the Internet?
orokusaki··on The story around the Linode hack
The ability for "hackers" to thrive is a necessary price to pay to secure our rights on the Internet. Trading freedom for security pays nothing, and never will. Let the FBI work their asses off to try to bust these people.
orokusaki··on What's the tallest point on Earth?
I know. I can't stand Quora. I'm not sure why I followed the link, but for once I was pleasantly surprised.
orokusaki··on What's the tallest point on Earth?
Wow, that was a great answer. I'm actually watching a show about Everest this very moment, and was telling my wife about how Everest is less prominent than 3 other mountains (except for the fact that there is a special definition for prominence when it comes to Everest).
orokusaki··on The fall of apple
Wow, doctape.com looks pretty cool. Minus a bit of the "header and footer are too big" complaints the others had, that looks like a pretty good app. BTW, I think Apple is about to release something on the order of a personal robot. I'm just saying...
orokusaki··on Ask HN: Can founder release a product under a new company using employees?
Time for court. No kidding.
orokusaki··on Ask HN: Freelancers...what PM tool do you use?
Your problem's cause is rooted in a a basic economic principle, supply and demand. When you quickly reply to each email, you become a cheap resource for help, undermining the usefulness of the client thinking through problems themselves, or perhaps thinking through their problems a bit longer before sending another email.

The solution? Delay your responses by 1-2 hours. Decreasing the supply on your side will serve to increase the "cost" of each interaction, since they have to wait for reply. You'll find the emails stop sounding as frantic and disorganized/incomplete, and not as many are sent.

orokusaki··on Those with $120K+ salaries... what do you do?
I'm a Python (specifically Django, currently) developer. The key isn't what you do though. It's A) being an entrepreneur (1099 > W2), B)work your ass off, and C) always ask for more but act like you have some humility in the process (don't play much hardball with dev managers...).
orokusaki··on PyPy's Speed Center
Memory usage is considerably down, in most cases as well (up in some, however)
orokusaki··on I Knew a Programmer Who Went Completely Insane
Poor guy, this is sad. I did have to laugh at, "He asked for a pencil and a piece of paper so he could write a program down.", however.
