ordiel··on Namecheap: Russia Service Termination
Thanks for clarifying why not to use your service
ordiel··on I took a job at Amazon, only to leave after 10 months
This is slightly similar to that moment when checking code and ask who is the dumb ass who wrote a certain piece just for git blame to show your name...
ordiel··on Should you contribute open data to OpenStreetMap?
No, but they can change the licence to indicate it cannot be used for displaying "data agregations" (like the one FB does), that way forcing those wanting to use the OSM data plus that of their quality asurance to either not using OSM data or to make their QA data public (hoping they will chose the latter) which would in deed benefit us all
ordiel··on Microsoft forked MIT licensed repo and changed the copyright [fixed]
And so ther revert the ones done in the past I hope...
ordiel··on Face recognition is being banned, but it’s still everywhere
As I heard "somewhere", 'now that they have forced you to wear a mask, dont remove it ;)'

(I know the profiling works even whit only the eye section yet you get the gist)

ordiel··on Ask HN: 27, accidentally became wealthy, lost drive. What should I do?
Was your drive money for the sake of making a living or the like?

I personally have a project I would like to fully invest my life on and I would love to have the opportunity of not having to work (even when I am doing it for a FAANG) so I can see it progress, i think it may give me a fair amount of money, yet the real drive behind it is so I can improve people's lives. I think you need that, find that something "you would like to be rememvered for". Notice I am not siggesting you to put all your money on it, but your hearth. Figure out a cause that engages you, IDK what would that be for you, preserving nature. Researching something you are interested on. It does not has to be something radical nor new, you could follow the path someone else has already walk just for the joy of learning, who knows, aybe you will see something they did not.

And please! Stay out of drugs. I am a christian believer and yet even if you are not there is plenty of wisdom on that book so please note the following:

KJB - Genesis 3:17

"And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life"

cursed is the ground for thy sake

The curse of having to work toake the land productive is FOR THY SAKE.

Leisure and money will destroy yoyr life if you dont handle it properly so keep yourself meaningfully occupied.

Enjoy such a great blessing, dont tunr it onto a curse on yourself.

Cheers

ordiel··on Work/life balance should be difficult
I work for a living, I don't live for work.

Giving too much importance to work is stupid (IMHO) and its a highway to feeling your life was entire shit by the end of it whenever that is... I think this pandemic serves as the best example to how disposable you are to a company... Just one more replacable cog in the machine...

ordiel··on Drop-In Replacement for Memcached
Most certainly opening the door to a diffetent kind of bugs. This mentally of tying bugs to a language demonstrates a very poor understanding of the issues themselves, and if anything a large impacting bug demonstrates wide adoption of an individual piece, most probably choosen due to its stability or ease of use.

Remember heartbleed?...

ordiel··on Log4j: Between a rock and a hard place
People and, many companies seem to forget that such software comes "AS IS" and it means, AS IS, I would be glad to see fortune 500 companies try to put together a team providing flawless logging capabilites. In reality I know they would not be able to get to be half as good as an open source library, fist of all drowning developers in unnecessary administrative tasks, imposing stupidly unreasonable deadlines and fully ignoring engineering advice from... well the engineering team. It's an insult that those companies profiting masively from so many open source projects still have the audacity to put blame on (again) software whose premise is "AS IS" specially when if you look at their projects (even the ones they sell to their customers) are basically bullshit put thogether with spit and boogers (and I've work in more than one FAANG to know this is truth by experience)
ordiel··on Twitter suspends account tracking Maxwell trial
Sniff sniff, smells like Cli ton amd a bit of orince andrew...
ordiel··on Zinc Search engine. A lightweight alternative to Elasticsearch written in Go
When people say "Lightweight alternative" most of the time they are implying less features also, they are not lightweight just because
ordiel··on YouTube deleting comments who criticize their hiding of the dislike count
I am more than ready to degoogle myself, if only my pinephone were fully functional :/. I need a phone that can support ANY OS of my choosing, not the one the vendor provides/allows, I am a paying google customer, drive and youtube, the former mostly due to the music, I guess its time to go back to the good old days. ARRGH!!! ;)

ordiel··on Our journey in dropping the ORM in Go
Meenwhile I am "traped at a fortune 500 enterprise" with a half baked project that I think would address all this, yet to affraid to drop that job due to "stability" (which COVID came to meke laughable) and also too afraid to make it publicly available for I think its not yet ready even to start reveiving feedback (even tho I have been able to start usong it gor simple cases) and draming of the day I will be able to spend all my working hours on it...
ordiel··on Morning exposure to deep red light improves declining vision
I am just wondering if this is something I could achieve with hue lights and what is the tonality I need to set them to in RGB
ordiel··on TIL the assumption that string length does not change when upper-cased is false
Bite lenght will be affected by the length of whatever is it that you are encoding, in this case an additional character would shift them by 8

I guess what I amsaying is:where are you marking the diffefence? any string (and all data) IS at the a series of encoded bites

ordiel··on TIL the assumption that string length does not change when upper-cased is false
Set top boxes (the things you use to decode paid tv signal and watch "the [shows] programing guide" ) uses a format called EIT (Event Information Table) which is transfered as an encoded binary file, for which MANY of the titles and tv shows info is capitalized (mostly* due to readability, you know so an L does not look like a 1) I worked on a proyect for such file generation and it is HIGHLY sensitive to the lengt of the data (since it will be encoded to a binary and if you add a single bite to the length of such file the rest of the info turns into garbage) ... Now that I think about it I may probably drop one of those guys still there a call to let them know the shows in german may have a bug... Can I get my 20 now?
ordiel··on Data-Oriented Architecture (2020)
Then develompen velocity goes down the drain :/ (which grows exponentially more unmanageable the more developers/applications you add to the mix)

In my opinion what you suggest would be a good solution... But try to pass that by mos. Manager for which (in most companies) we are already late to compleate the newly received feature/requirement

ordiel··on Data-Oriented Architecture (2020)
In my opinion (to summarize) this solve one of the main problem introduced by (wrongly implementing your microservices/ splitting your monolith) which is data intrgrity there is a reason why many cloud services are "eventually consitent" (no wonder the head quartes for such are located in such leftiest cities since its obvious they like the word-playing. By adding any modifier to "consistent" they are telling you it is NOT consitent, even if that is for a "brief" period of time). With this aproach you centralize your data and implement multiple actors working atop the same set of data; as they say in the article this comes to its own costs, mainly due to the limitations of existing ORM's (see https://blogs.tedneward.com/post/the-vietnam-of-computer-sci... you can jum onto "vietnam and OR mapping" to save you a bunch of historic bull crap) where then you have multiple applications working on the same set of data you go onto a more horrible place than data integrity issues, which is data corruption issues... In brief, choose your own poison, you like debugging the DB/data issues, debugging your apps, or having an un scalable system?
ordiel··on Glass is the hidden gem in a carbon-neutral future
As a side not suporting my case, haven't you seen how many post here in HN talk about "patent trolls"; and why all (oh excuse me, most) of those are actually talking about America?

Maybe "slide to unlock" rings a bell?

You dont see those type of things in, lets say, Brazil or Mexico (where I am from) since in case the bottle has an anomaly you go back to the counter and they would just say... "Oh sorry about that, here is a new one", you know... Being civil, instead of keeping it as a "golden ticket" to take it to the court. Why, because people realizes that the coca-cola truck may have it a bump a bit too hard and that just life, we know it and we just go on with it...

ordiel··on Glass is the hidden gem in a carbon-neutral future
A bit of internet collective wisdom borrowed from the highly reputable source of reddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/22j0n6/why_do_am...

The attitude I am referring to is that of when people having it too good need to find something to complain about insted of brushing off a generalization (which as most stereotypes is based on factual bases)

Based on the snarky-ness of the article favoring "the greatness" of European nations (compared to the rest of the world), maybe I should have said "not in the US, where 'most' will sue you for looking wrong at them"

ordiel··on Glass is the hidden gem in a carbon-neutral future
And the following is literally the first paragraph on the article:

"Glass can be recycled infinitely without losing any of its properties. Why, then, are most countries — with the exception of those in Europe "

Thanks for serving as the perfect excample to the type of attitude I was referring to

ordiel··on Glass is the hidden gem in a carbon-neutral future
Of course you dont want that... In the US, where they will sue you for looking wrong at people or they will rally up a crowd in protest... In the rest of the world where people are normal that is not a problem. Specially considetong that if the glass is already fragile it will either crack during cleaning or while being transported. If the bottle can handle being clinking on the bands while being filled up, I am sure it can stand being on the fragile hands of some folks
ordiel··on Try charging on the right and not on the left
Apple hardware quality and the design decisions have gone to shit since jobs died. The folks thet were feed up with the hype of his return to a diying company (and with a good reason, since the company really improved) are the ones keeping the company alive... In my opinion unless something changes it wont take long for it to be the dying company they use to be... They have a grat "body" but they lack the "heart" (and apparently the brain also)
ordiel··on London's Thames, once biologically dead, has been coming back to life
I wonder if the native wildlife is also complaining about the "myriad of biodiversity" on the river ;)
ordiel··on Gmail’s fake loading indicator (2020)
Or you know, set a maximum payload size to load the main page then load the rest of the needed content (when it is actually needed). Set a well known header on the contents and use that header (and the time it took to retrieve it) as a way to detemine the aprox time it would take to retrieve your well known payload size... I know I am over simplifying it but... Its Google and they hire some of the most brilliant minds in the wolrd and put them to do unit tests... I think many of them would be happy to be put up to a problem of this type
ordiel··on Experiencing History in Assassin’s Creed
TL;DR

Assassin's Creed games were good and historically accurate untill they got the original creators out (and Desmond dies) From there onwards is pure shit intended to sell games to button-smasher type of players....

ordiel··on Making the dislike count private across YouTube
Oh! the maximum expression of irony comes by seen how many dislikes that shit is getting...
ordiel··on End Software Patents
I think complexity is an aspect that need to be considered here... I personally would feel like instead of spending 10 years working on something that will be copied so someone else takes the benefit I would much rather not to inovate and waste that time.

Similar as to how google did steal the JVM claimimg that just because they "added" "some" memory features they suddenly revolutionized the entire thing... Bullshit specially being open sourced they could have easily added those features so that THE ENTIRETY of the java/jvm ecosystem could benefit from such improvements, even in desktop, ALSO allowing what now we even came to know as "android apps" to run in other platforms since well at the end... It just a jvm. A move which by the way has become even much clearer now that they are changing the tratitional packaging format (casually) now that android apps begin running on other devises. Its clear it's intent was to get a bunch of already well trained coding monkeys by effectively copying the entire API so they could quickly ease adoption of their platform without giving back to the same jvm community that they copied/reused to make billions

Sadly the person choosen to explain this at the SCOTUS was too stupid and not technical enough to put this into words

ordiel··on A Note About Recruiters
For (some startups) it makes sense, especially if you onlu want a code monkey (for which I would recomend recriuters to go to colleges) but their teams (or they themselves) impose this stupid "minimum X years of experience". I've known golks with years and years of experience who know no shit, so if anything those years prove they are willing to suck it up bit no muvh more; as I have also knows some fresh college graduates who are a fucking bomb.

Now saying its a numbers game also makes sence yet they (recriuters) are ignorimg the fact that each one of those "numbers" they turn into an interview will require 2 or 3 hours from the developers who will actually serve as a filter... I (personally) am tired of having to interview people who from the first 10 minutes I know won't be a good fit just because the recruiter is playing the "numbers game"
