Hiring is a hard problem of computer science, maybe even harder than naming things!
This is why I love capitalism!
- When the goal of medicine is profit instead of helping patients the outcomes will be poor.
- When the goal of education is profit instead of teaching students the outcomes will be poor.
- When the goal of politics is profit instead of collaboration the outcomes will be poor.
- When the goal of business is political, educational or medicinal the outcomes will be poor.
Generic formulation:
Any attempt to apply a metric that works in one context to the entire system will result in poor outcomes.
Chances are you'll make new friends in the process and, in my experience, chances are that new friends will lead to new job opportunities.
Caveat: This is not a lucrative strategy, but it is a sustainable strategy.
Luckily there are other organizations out there that encourage kindness rather than penalizing it.
Only catch is, you probably won't make it through the first interview if you don't start practicing being kind right where you are. Soft skills are hard and take sustained effort to internalize.

The mayhem created by deinstitutionalisation is vastly under-appreciated.
Some expensive lessons are about to be learnt.
(assuming democratic governance remains in effect, otherwise all bets are off)
Ask one of the many people who know today!
Think the same is: Screw everyone and everything as hard as possible for maximum personal gain even if it's only going to benefit me in the short term and take special care to let everyone know how great a guy I am while simultaneously skullfucking them!
Think different is: Hey, check it out! There's so many of us here, let's work together and then who knows how far we could go?

The true measure of success and character is not the money you're making but the actions you take to protect your reputation by passing up on opportunities to behave like a common or garden-variety street crook.
Society has a long memory and the last of your filthy lucre will be long gone before anyone's gonna give you the time of day again.
Build a search index that excludes anything with ads on it.
Yes, that excludes a lot of content and no, I really don't care if it does. We'll always have Google for that.

Anyone who's spent time in musician communities will also understand just how good you need to be if you're still doing it after two decades.
I still think there's a massive gap in the market for an ergodic startup community where the young ambitious people tell the Gen-X's to go fuck themselves with a police baton and instead enjoy the benefits of pooling the risks & sharing the rewards.
