ooboe··on The first new cat species discovered in 100 years
"Also found in Whoppers From burger king"

Still needs some work!

ooboe··on CO2 overload, detected in human blood, suggests toxic atmosphere within 50 years
This is the reason closed environments (e.g., space vehicles, submursibles, rebreathers) have CO2 scrubbers.
ooboe··on I ported Mac OS X to the Nintendo Wii
The picture with the black seats in on a train and the one with the green seats is on a plane.
ooboe··on Netflix raises prices for every subscription tier by up to 12.5 percent
Yes, it is.

No ads or previews to skip before each episode. Skip button seems to appear at different times.

No waiting for the skip button for recaps or intros. Sometimes they decide not to appear. If you jump 10s, sometimes they don't appear. Most pirated shows are appropriately bookmarked.

No waiting for the "next episode" button to appear. Sometimes they decide not to appear. If you jump 10s, sometimes they don't appear.

Some services make it harder than it should be to get to the episode/season list.

Must use their player. Usually means controls and subtitles appear on top of video. Screen dimmed on pause. Wack-a-mole controls.

That's not even counting the "few outliers" that I seem to encounter frustratingly often.

ooboe··on The demise of public key encryption will come sooner than thought, Google warns
From the article "Google said it is giving itself until 2029 to prepare for this event."

ooboe··on LaGuardia pilots raised safety alarms months before deadly runway crash
To get an idea of the crazy workload some of these controllers are experiencing, the beginning of this video has an untrimmed 1-minute excerpt of ATC communications for Newark approach. Even the rest of the video, which has some editing, has no silences removed.

ooboe··on HIV Life Cycle – animated and narrated [video]
Several universities and organizations have labs dedicated to producing these kind of videos, but 12 years ago the BBC made a good documentary aimed at a general audience on how adenoviruses attack a human and how the body defends against it.

ooboe··on Air Canada is responsible for chatbot's mistake: B.C. tribunal
Air Canada is going to get a lot of publicity over an $812 judgement in a provincial small claims court.
ooboe··on Air Canada is responsible for chatbot's mistake: B.C. tribunal
"In an argument that appeared to flabbergast a small claims adjudicator in British Columbia, the airline attempted to distance itself from its own chatbot's bad advice by claiming the online tool was "a separate legal entity that is responsible for its own actions."

"This is a remarkable submission," Civil Resolution Tribunal (CRT) member Christopher Rivers wrote.""

ooboe··on Ontario plans to refurbish Canada's oldest nuclear power plant
The province of Ontario in Canada is planning major refurbishments and expansions to their nuclear power generation. They want to nearly double the capacity of what is already the largest nuclear generating station in the world.

ooboe··on Chromium found in lead-tainted fruit pouches may explain contamination
Hah, 'chromium' was not a useful search term when checking if this was a repost.
ooboe··on Chromium found in lead-tainted fruit pouches may explain contamination
Finding lead and now chromium in apple sauce that has poisoned hundreds in the US supports suspicion that lead chromate is the source. Lead chromate is frequently used in "economically motivated adulteration" of spices, notably cinnamon and tumeric.
ooboe··on United finds loose bolts on plug doors during 737 Max 9 inspections
The 4 bolts are there to restrain vertical motion of the door which I presume would not involve large forces. They are meant to keep the door on the 4 cylindrical posts and 12 stop pads and it is those posts and pads that take the pressure differential forces on the door and keep it from blowing out. They are way beefier than the bolts and I believe they are still intact on the accident plane.
ooboe··on United finds loose bolts on plug doors during 737 Max 9 inspections
The 4 restraining nuts and bolts on the door have a cotter pin like mechanism to prevent them from loosening. If assembled correctly they cannot loosen unless the pin fails.
ooboe··on Venus is not Earth’s closest neighbor (2019) [pdf]
Didn't work out so well for Branson.
ooboe··on Internet drama in Canada
Considering things from the mobile perspective (but largely true for internet too):

> Yes, most of it is empty and unserviced

Well, that's the key, isn't it. Look at the highly optimistic coverage maps from the companies and you'll see how little of Canada is covered. Actual coverage is significantly poorer than those coverage maps indicate outside urban areas.

> but building a national network costs the same amount no matter how many users it has

These "national" networks are a few paltry routes across the country and in no way compare to the national networks of other countries.

The most obvious counter to the apologists' landmass argument is the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan where mobile rates were half that of the rest of Canada despite having lower population densities than most of the other territories. They both had robust state-owned companies that competed with the big 3 (likely soon to be big 2) and all 4 profitably operated at these lower rates. In a very controversial move, the state-owned company in Manitoba (MTS) was privatised in 1996 and bought out by one of the big 3 in 2017. A few years later the rates in Manitoba rose to match the rest of the country. This highlights the real reason for expensive mobile in Canada.

ooboe··on MS Windows Defender and DeCSS
Yes, if true, this would invalidate the "heuristics error on exe" argument.
ooboe··on MS Windows Defender and DeCSS
His comment in /r/sysadmin:

"Setting a Windows Defender exception to the folder does not prevent the quarantine from occurring. I re-ran this test three times trying exceptions and even the entire NAS drive as on the excluded list."

Windows Defender is overriding the user whitelist?

Garbage TV link, but they address your question. One thing they get very right is that, in non-game, non-rushed environments, even the worst NHL hockey player can pick any corner of the net.

ooboe··on Lou Ottens, inventor of cassette tape, has died
One of the great pioneers of electronic music, Delia Derbyshire, part of the equally pioneering BBC Radiophonic Workshop, hacked reel audio tapes and machines in the way you describe and much more, to create her sounds. She was so OCD in doing so that it was a bit damaging, and may have viewed the later digital synths as a godsend or with disdain. She created the Dr. Who theme.

ooboe··on ‘It just blew fire’: Kauai woman watched as an engine fell apart on flight 328
That fire through the thrust reversers burned all the way to the ground. It was probably lubrication oil, hydraulic oil, or CFRP burning.
ooboe··on Spy pixels in emails have become endemic
The BBC admits to using them too in the article.
ooboe··on Boeing 757 cargo door opens after takeoff
Most commercial airplane doors cannot open directly outward. They unseal inward and then twist to clear outward. At altitude the internal pressure will push them directly outward and render them unable to open, even if the locks fail. In this regard they are fail-safe.

The DC-10 eschewed this standard in favour of doors that opened directly outward with catastrophic results if the locks failed.

ooboe··on Dyson air purifier outperformed by cheap DIY box fan filter in Marketplace test
I have used a Miele bagged cannister and a Dyson bagless cannister, both corded, and a variety of cheaper units. Miele all the way.
ooboe··on Dyson air purifier outperformed by cheap DIY box fan filter in Marketplace test
Yes, emptying bagless units is a disgusting process. Even outdoors, it's not pleasant.
