onyva··on Removing safeguards and oversight, cabinet okays mass surveillance to halt virus
You need to assume they were all tracked before. For sure Israeli Arabs and Palestinians were always tracked. So not really news as such.
onyva··on Show HN: Buy a gift card and support small business
I'd like to see a similar pledge from small business owners. Stop supporting Neo-liberal idiots. It's great while it works, for them, but it's a horrible mess for ALL of us when it doesn't.

PS. I believe majority of small business owners vote-in pro-business governments and politicians (from Drumpf, to Nethanyhu, to Boris and the rest). Mostly Neo-liberal charlatans, which only work to strip public services to bare minimum in order to artificially boost the economy (i.e. mostly make their friends even richer) while putting us all in danger.

What we all need is a strong, pro-active, and humane government, which understands the economy, but doesn't throw us all under the bus.

onyva··on Europe should forget about Green Deal, focus on Coronavirus – Czech PM
Talk about missing the point.
onyva··on [dead]
Good catch. Thanks. I was looking around the site since I thought I’ve seen it posted here quite often and was wondering why.
onyva··on Coronavirus sparks nationwide strikes in Italy
Good for them. The world runs on the backs of these people. It’s sad though that tech and social media did not lead to greater social justice, it took a virus.
onyva··on Germany tries to stop U.S. from luring away firm seeking coronavirus vaccine
USA is so far behind China and Europe in so many ways, I don’t think these type of dirty games are gonna make Americans feel better about themselves. It’s a dying society and it shows.
onyva··on White House seeks Silicon Valley help battling coronavirus
Step one: close Drumpf’s twitter account and delete all video clips of him talking.
onyva··on Americans divided on party lines over risk from coronavirus: Reuters/Ipsos poll
The USA is really quickly drifting away from our civilization. Way too many Americans have lost any connection with reality and have become Fox News zombies, to continued believing Drumpf was an accident or Russian hack.
onyva··on Show HN: Saga – Git-style version control for non-text files
I guess it offers more specific features compared with git-annex or lfs?
onyva··on Confessions of a Call-Centre Scammer
They still have a long way to scam as many people as Facebook or Google, I dare to think.
onyva··on Firefox 74
Absolutely zero trust in for-profits, especially ones who only care about an exit or getting bought by Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc. It'll be too late to get your data out of their hands at that stage. Regardless, so far we've seen that no software/company is 100% reliable, no matter what their expertise...
onyva··on NetNewsWire Is Available for iOS
Yes. I agree the UI is a bit overwhelming. Slick though and looks great on an iPad too. But since I host my own, I did find it useful. Also supports Pocket, like I guess you’ve seen. Would love to hear recommendations for another app which supports NextCloud.
onyva··on Firefox 74
Because I trust Mozilla with my data. Would love it to support alternative backends, like NextCloud, though.
onyva··on Firefox 74
Even it were true, which is not, Facebook had been anything but fair to its users (and non users) in case you didn’t get a chance to follow the news. Since Mozilla is all about user’s privacy and safety online and Facebook is such a huge menace than it actually makes sense to offer a targeted solution. But again, it’s just an implementation of a container, nothing specific to Facebook.
onyva··on Firefox 74
Same for me on iOS. Commented above. It’s also annoyingly slow.
onyva··on Firefox 74
I wish they’d fix Lockwise on iOS. Not really working. In my case takes ages to open when set as default, and never auto suggests login for the active site, either from Firefox or any other app.
onyva··on Switzerland stops contact tracing, reduces quarantine to 5 days
I've heard yesterday Switzerland is really not prepared very well. They are relying on hospitalization, but clearly the calculation is they'll only take in high risk cases.

first commenter says when her child developed flu like symptoms they were told they can't guarantee what she has, go home and see what happens the next 5 days, wearing a mask not to spread it to others...

onyva··on Mount cloud storage (S3, Backblaze) using SMB/NFS directly to your file system
Doesn't rclone mount offer a bigger selection of cloud storage providers? https://rclone.org/commands/rclone_mount/
onyva··on Detroit to restore water to allow people to wash hands to avoid coronavirus
Nobody is acting on “media scare”, as you and Fox News are calling it. It’s called science, and it’s driven by facts, based on data from sources such as the WHO. The information given explains the risks and precautions that should be considered. You don’t have to believe but please don’t spread misinformation.
onyva··on Detroit to restore water to allow people to wash hands to avoid coronavirus
How is the USA considered a “developed country”?
onyva··on You are using a video conference application mostly developed by Chinese – Zoom
Any non free software tool (or open source), USA on Chinese, would be a risk, no?
onyva··on NetNewsWire Is Available for iOS
I'm currently using Fiery Feeds on iOS, mostly because it supports NextCloud News very well (for me it's the most important feature).

It's also very well designed, switches to "Reading Mode" automatically (if you choose) and lets you switch to to Excerpt/HTML views when Reading Mode is ineffective.

onyva··on Coronavirus: Israel to bring in 14-day quarantine for all arrivals
Is it though? You really don’t know Israel very well. It’s a shtetl and it’s all transactional. Not only it’s not necessary, the implications are substantial. The original plan of the ministry of health was to only impose this on high risk countries, few European and the USA. But then Pense called and pressured them to make it all countries, so the USA would not stick out and look bad.

onyva··on The Brave browser is brilliant, but probably not for the reasons you think
I think if you have something worth saying, having an audience I a reward. True that there are different types of content, say “tutorials” that are valuable and wouldn't have been produced otherwise, but the monetization platform are themselves an incentive to produce stuff that really no one ever would’ve wanted to read or watch. Look at the profits of YouTube. Yes 1% is very valuable but most of it pure rubbish, that’s not only is dumbing societies down and inciting violence, it’s also a horrible waste of resources, human an natural.

I don’t know what’s the answer. Maybe a separate “commercial” internet, sort of shopping internet, where you you accepting the rules and the reward is your attention, time and resources for free content.

onyva··on Tesla's Elon Musk says the coronavirus panic is dumb
I hope he and people like him (Trump) will be held accountable for spreading misinformation and putting people at risk.
onyva··on A Collection of Covid-19 Company Policies
I was looking forward... maybe qualify: USA based, Hi-Tech, etc...
onyva··on Coronavirus: Chinese police wear smart helmets to detect people with fevers

onyva··on The Case Against Microsoft and GitHub
Main points since the article renders strangely for me on the iPhone:

Collaboration with US military for conducting mass murder

Collaboration with NSA for illegal mass spying on innocent people

Collaboration with ICE who runs concentration camps

Drop Microsoft. Drop GitHub. Drop LinkedIn. Drop Azure. Drop Windows.

onyva··on The Brave browser is brilliant, but probably not for the reasons you think
Free is NOT the problem. Free is the “business model” of the internet. Just because some people want to monetize it doesn’t mean we need to give up and just let them do what they want. Selling ads is not the purpose of the internet. Content created to sell ads is most of the time garbage. No chicken, no egg no puzzle to resolve.
onyva··on The Brave browser is brilliant, but probably not for the reasons you think
It’s actually worse since they’re clearly promoting it claiming it’s open source and it puts privacy first, which are better selling points then the fact that if comes with a Trojan horse in form of an ad network, clearly.
