onyva··on Hypothes.is: An Open Annotations Platform
My biggest problem with it was the lack of support for frames. Many sites I use serve documents in frames making hypothes.is unable to see them. Also, why not work with NextCloud and create an app to annotate documents there. NextCloud over public or private share?
onyva··on Microsoft calls for a closer look at app stores
Oh Brad Smith. Like, only few years back he was heading Microsoft’s onslaught against Linux and open source with exactly the opposite, calling Microsoft technology “open” because they published APIs. I wonder where Republican law makers got their straight face hypocrisy and cynicism if not from companies like Microsoft.
onyva··on Mozilla VPN
Agree. I’m currently on Proton but I’d like to see Mozilla bundle the essentials, with vpn and mail as the basics.

Also, consider if possible affordability for students and senior, who might not be able to afford a subscription. Maybe limited bandwidth for free w/o subscription? Something like ProtonVPN provided.

onyva··on Ask HN: How do you read long PDFs?
I read and annotate in Emacs mostly, using pdftools + org-noter.

Specifically org-noter can synchronize its buffers with the pdf you’re reading. It’ll also create a skeleton from an outline, if available in the PDF, and even extract highlights and notes in for you. It’s really quite useful tool.

On iOS I read and annotate using PSPDFKit’s PDF viewer, which is incredibly featurefull in the free version, but even more so with subscription (too expensive IMHO).

One nice feature it has, for readers of Hebrew and Arabic, is flipping the edge to right or left. Also editing meta data etc.

In respect to your question, also keeping position in file, bookmarks etc and it uses iOS’s file picker, so you can store your PDFs anywhere accessible (for me on Nextbloud WebDAV share).

onyva··on Facebook fires employee for publicly scolding a colleague
No but the issue is a statement on the project’s page, which is a public good. Expressing support for a just and important movement for social progress like BLM is, in this respect, expected and thus asked. It has nothing to do with politics. It’s a social movement that the right is trying to vilify and turn into a political wedge issue, as well as cultural “Other”.
onyva··on It’s time to end China’s ‘United Front’ operations inside the United States
Republican worries about repression in China. Perfectly ok with repression in Russia and the ties between this administration and Russian political operative? Wow. Mind blown.
onyva··on The Brave web browser is hijacking links, and inserting affiliate codes
Right to happiness is not a moral question that needs to be debated every time someone on Fox News needs to generate mass hysteria for profit. I think the average person can differentiate between what’s moral and what’s immoral and where are the boundaries between the two. The USA is in a complete meltdown because some still insist on staying blind.
onyva··on The Brave web browser is hijacking links, and inserting affiliate codes
Brave is really not solving any problem. People that truly want ads removed so they don’t get tracked or bothered, should simply install Firefox. It’s a brilliant browser regardless, and being developed and supported by a non for profit with a proven track record is what makes it trustworthy.

Brave can’t compete with that and Eich is not somebody anyone should rally behind in respect to ethical choices, or moral example. His personal choices to support legislation that will deny basic human rights from the LGBTQ community is a BIG clue.

onyva··on Civil rights leaders blast Facebook after meeting with Zuckerberg
This is not about censoring. Putting a warning beside a comment for BS is in fact very effective. Not only it humiliates the bastard, it also keeps a record of his ignorance for the world to see. There’s nothing special about the president. He’s elected by people. In this case it’s not even sure whom exactly since he lost the popular vote by a huge margin. But he’s a human and not above the law. The problem is the USA constitution that has no answers for the possibility of someone like Drumpf getting elected and then tools for congress to control him while in power. When it comes to decisions with big implications, border wall or brexit (in the UK) it can’t be left to a simple majority to decide.
onyva··on Man behind Sweden’s controversial virus strategy admits mistakes
Yeah. Oops.

Maybe use the opportunity to apologize for scapegoating medical support workers who don’t speak “good enough Swedish” to follow instructions. Same workers from similar background all over Europe of course, where authorities did a much better job with less xenophobia.

onyva··on Sonder: E-Ink Keyboard
Totally agree. I’m used to typing Hebrew and lately Arabic blindly on a USA keyboard but sometimes I get stuck and it helps to have a quick look. Problem is I’m mostly in Emacs and with its very own inputs it’s not going to help much, unless it’s programmable...
onyva··on Show HN: A Firefox add-on to strip Google search results of 'blacklisted' URLs
Wonderful idea. I find google to be marginally useful. Mostly though it returns a barrage of low quality results like mentioned here in the comments, that might be related but you really don’t ever want to see. Obvious though it’ll never be allowed on chrome’s web store.
onyva··on The front page of The New York Times for May 24, 2020
You mean the USA invasion to ... and the USA war in... I assume. These crimes are crimes initiated and committed by the USA and the UK for which only Iraqis and afghans had to pay the price.
onyva··on Google is now applying its coronavirus misinformation policies to personal files
Anti-Google article -> Brave ad -> Eye roll.
onyva··on Ask HN: Where did AMP pages go?
Didn’t know that. Another point for Firefox for sure.
onyva··on Thelaptoplist.com – Laptop Finder Quiz, Reviews and Compare Laptop
Amazon needs to die not affiliated. Would be great to see something like this based on data from OEMs other than Dell Acer HP and Lenovo.
onyva··on In Pursuit of PPE
Not sure if that’s the source but Rachel Maddow was reporting on this for a week now, if I’m not mistaken.
onyva··on Zoom Call with Israelis Lands a Gaza Peace Activist in Jail
You want to know what happens to Israelis who are “suspected” of talking to Palestinians, or foreigners who arrive or leave Israel and are suspected of having done that?
onyva··on Zoom founder sells $38mm of stock amidst FBI investigations
Wow. Dailymail tech news. That’s a new low.
onyva··on All my friends are dying
Because what the USA needs is even more deregulation? The only thing Drumpf is doing is deregulating the USA into a hellish nightmare that will kill thousands of people.
onyva··on Amazon warehouse workers are walking out and Whole Foods workers are striking
The only thing important and is the practice in civilized countries is universal health care and payed lives for sickness, child birth etc. The USA is a hell hole and this is why people need to fear loosing their livelihoods or their lives. These should not be the only two options available in any civilized country.

onyva··on Israel just published an app to stop the spread of the Covid_19 virus
You mean based on their non existing ability to track location accurately?

onyva··on How Accurate Is Israel's 'Terrorist-Tracking' Tech?
Same technology used for targeted assassinations of Palestinians in the name of “national security”.
onyva··on Show HN: An iOS app for building and tracking your habits
Got it. Wasn't aware of the backend supporting the app! Regardless, I'd rather pay upfront. The app can be offer limited time usage with all the features for testing.
onyva··on Show HN: An iOS app for building and tracking your habits
I'm more likely to buy an app then a subscription. I really don't understand why developers that don't deliver substantial content through their app think this model is necessary. It in fact discourages me from even testing the app in the first place.
onyva··on (WHO) World Health Organization Live Updates (Facebook)
Real fact based updates, tips and recommendation. Might interest parents with children, people with disability etc. (Not just formal announcements.)
onyva··on Dutch adopt controversial ‘herd immunity’ strategy
