Interesting - someone laser focused on education. When school went virtual he quit as a teacher, rented a space, and told 145 students he’d be teaching there. 140 showed up and they crushed competitors.

So he immediately felt virtual learning would not be as good as in person, school wouldn’t let him teach in person (he is in his 60s) so he quits.

I’d trust this guy more then the Ed unions saying virtual is just as good as in person

onphonenow··on Uber broke laws, duped police and built lobbying operation, leak reveals
I’d support anyone who broke the sf taxi cartel. For all the high minded rhetoric folks spew about how the regulations protected the consumer - it was a clear cartel - racist, poor service, insultingly bad in fact. The fact that govt agencies and departments bent over backwards to support this garbage is all you need to know about the peoples representatives
onphonenow··on Why Linux Succeeded
A good point. MS has done well with their compatibility efforts too. Wasn’t it don’t break vs don’t change?
onphonenow··on Why Linux Succeeded
The fragmentation here was I think a Linus misstep - when the wake lock and other ideas came out some subsystem maintainers were fussing.

But code talks and talk walks, the android folks were solving real issues - so my own view would have been to be supportive of their efforts which were not insignificant.

onphonenow··on Why Linux Succeeded
Easy answer.

The GPLv2

Linus Torvalds

—-

GPLv3 would have flopped. BSD results in variants and splinters. as a dictator Linus made a ton of good calls - and a dictator making good calls is pretty efficient.

The part that makes me laugh is fsf ignoring the views of their number one success as they fragmented copyleft with GPLv3. Linus has built THE most successful community collaboration. Instead the FSF brought in the lawyers

I’m one of those rule follower types. Worked in govt for a while. Long time democrat “big govt” voter.

If I’m losing faith it’s got to be a bad sign I think. So I believe these stats. I never thought govt was great, but very often “good enough”.

Then we got cdc blocking Covid testing, Biden doing his big EV summit without Tesla and going on about GM being the one changing things, the space launch system boondoggle, just makes it hard to trust govt will spend money wisely

Not really that bad. San Francisco used to have crazy bills. Trauma response fees go up to 50k even if nothing is wrong.

I can get the price of my fast food burger to the penny - but good luck getting a quote on something that will cost 50,000.

I did medical billing for a bit and in my space 70% of the issue was stupid politics

onphonenow··on Why No IPv6?
Right. NPT is not well supported. NAT66 is out there, but when you think of address space size is totally ridiculous. That said it does solve a bunch of issues.

These folks are pretty clueless about pediatric speech pathology work. They are making a claim these kids are logging in and navigating ehr systems to extract phi about other kids. I’m not sure they are aware of target for service here.

Zoom does not allow screen blanking as far as I know. Remote access in these settings is both Monitored and can be canceled.

So this is a series of weird if statements. If this disabled kid gets up and runs to file cabinet in office, opens it, funds a file and extracts data phi is violated. Sure but pretty darn unlikely

onphonenow··on Why No IPv6?
Not true, in a failover wan scenario new RAs can mess a ton of stuff up on the local network and are not immediate as the local network renumbers and if routes are flapping a total nightmare. Layer in bad ipv6 routing or handling causing timeouts and fallback to ipv4
onphonenow··on Why No IPv6?
Easy - it sucks!

I tried to failover wan on a biz network. With ipv4 NAT this just works. Local traffic doesn’t even blip. IPv6 is comically bad here. All the autoconfig magic falls on its face. I don’t want rotating ipv6 addresses everywhere. Things like nptv6 as a workaround badly supported. NAT66 etc results in comically large internal address space - the list goes on. Can we do ipv5? Ohh, and my isps won’t give out static ipv6 blocks to save address space but a static ipv4 block is easy.

onphonenow··on Netflix lays off 300 additional staff
There were claims that the last round significantly impacted folks working on some critical intersectional across race / ethnicity / gender identity type programming.

There were some articles about the layoffs last time and the major backlash that resulted. Protocol covered this, noting "Protocol identified at least 40 people from marginalized backgrounds who lost their jobs in the latest round of cuts."

Interestingly, as I read this Meta announcement a settlement on similar discrimination claims:

"Discrimination in housing, employment and credit is a deep-rooted problem with a long history in the US, and we are committed to broadening opportunities for marginalized communities in these spaces and others," Roy Austin Jr., Meta's vice president of civil rights, wrote in a blog post.

onphonenow··on The Evolution of THC Vape Cartridges
From the current data, we can conclude that the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) component of cannabis can be the main culprit causing psychosis and schizophrenia in the at-risk population. THC can also be the one exacerbating symptoms and causing an adverse prognosis in already diagnosed patients.

It is a well-known fact that many of the abuse substances cause psychosis, which is a part of the schizophrenia spectrum; cannabis is one [9]

Nevertheless, the fact remains that schizophrenia and psychosis walk hand in hand alongside with cannabis use. Cannabis has many strains with different ratios of components. The ratio of THC and CBD is the most important psychotomimetic property of any cannabis strain [14]. When a healthy person uses cannabis, he experiences relaxation, euphoria, and a decrease in anxiety and boredom. However, they might also have some undesirable effects like paranoia, grandiosity, agitation, hallucination, cognitive impairment, disorganized thinking and behavior, and depersonalization [17]. People predisposed to the development of psychotic illness are more vulnerable to the psychotomimetic effects of cannabis, more specifically, THC [16,17].

Per se cannabis does not cause schizophrenia or psychosis. However, we have longitudinal data supporting the causal link between cannabis and psychosis [18].

Correct, Google Business Plus is 5,000 GB per user. It's pooled, so if you have 20 users, you have 100,000 GB of storage for the team.

Most users use almost nothing so for our use cases google drive has no marginal cost and I've been seeing what I consider positive changes to the google drive story (and maybe speed?)

onphonenow··on Dropbox Shop Beta
Dropbox sometimes get's stuck for us (very annoying). We pay for google so have free google drive. We pay for office so have one drive.

We use dropbox as a poor persons collaboration tool. About 100,000 files in 20,000 folders. My major complaint - when it gets stuck syncing a quit on the app and restart of the app solves things - so I wish they would do that internally to the app, just timeout and restart whatever is jamming things up.

I do like the app / folders scoped permissions. For apps that play well there is an apps folder, and the app just has access to its own folder in there. A nice integration point for apps to dump files to for users to look at.

Three draws per HOUR?!

Pot smokers routinely go way way way over that limit. Is this a limit because THC levels will be supposedly deadly or because of something else (technical etc).

Public health / medicine has just gone off the rails. I believe pot smoking is bad for you, but where do they even come up with these recommendation.

onphonenow··on Alzheimer’s amyloid hypothesis ‘cabal’ thwarted progress toward a cure (2019)
As you pointed out in your original comment, VC's will def fund moonshots and big growth ideas with 1 in 10 or 1 in 100 chances for payoff. These don't make short term profits, but they have the potential to do something dominating.

SpaceX against a huge established industrial base. That's going to be VC type funding, not traditional funding streams. We had govt initially doing everything they could to shut spacex out, doing block buys, trying to crush them on paperwork etc.

My complaint is simple. We know the current billions spent under current approaches have not cured a wide variety of illnesses. So what harm is there in spending some, relatively small amounts of money, on other ideas.

What's interesting is the reaction from folks like you, NIH, academics and others. It's vehement rejection. But why not instead demonstrate your approach results in a cure. The rejection is because you know you are sitting on nothing.

We see this with spaceX. Established astronomers are crying bloody murder. But this is in part because they are afraid. Their huge thirty meter telescope gravy train (decades of funding into their labs) is at risk of being totally trumped by cheaper access to space, where telescopes work great.

Established businesses tend to be risk averse. So in short, a role to play here for new ideas.

Note: Be careful about snarky comments, those are best avoided on HN, and can be a bit embarrassing in hindsight if you try to be snarky but inadvertently are correct and then have to try and walk back a point that you didn't mean to make.

I'm curious if sites like the pirate bay are "high risk". If so, did it take $100M / year to keep them up with legal and HR teams etc?

These claims are often made, but I'm not sure they check out. Plenty of much much more controversial stuff stays online / is available. But supposedly wikipedia will be destroyed without these experts.
