Why would I think that?
onpensionsterm··on Cyclists now outnumber motorists in City of London
>- Immediately stopped having insomnia. Better feel overall;

It's interesting you mention that. When I took up cycling to work in Manchester, I started struggling to fall fully asleep because I'd have short pseudo-dreams about the POV of cycling on wet, dark, busy roads & jerk awake, scared that I was falling asleep at the handlebars.

onpensionsterm··on The Galaga no-fire-cheat mystery (2012)
>you got cussed out by the high priest of IT because your backups were taking up more than 500KB of drive space.

IT becoming upset when the things people need to do to get work done deviates from their IT model?

Some things never change.

Destroying value and market price are unrelated concepts.

The eternal cognitohazard of discussing crypto online is that you are dealing with deeply invested people without any guarantee that they understand finance in general.

onpensionsterm··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
Perhaps you should delete prod so you have to work harder, compete harder, learn faster just to save your job
onpensionsterm··on Toyota CEO talks about why he isn’t all-in on EVs
>we haven’t had to increase the capacity of our electric grid in decades

Who's we? In China, generation has doubled in a decade. What a sad time to be alive if even existential failure isn't a strong enough motivator to get a developed country to pay for some infrastructure.

Vietnam's transport stats are skewed by insane import and luxury taxes.
onpensionsterm··on Evaluation of TikTok vs. Instagram Reels
>They could have cherry picked other sample posts to demonstrate the exact opposite.

They couldn't, because it's 'the algorithm' that does the picking & Facebook's algorithm optimises for inauthentic or boomer. Cherry-picking posts isn't a standard usecase.

onpensionsterm··on Map showing birthplaces of "notable people" around the world
The word 'racist' didn't appear until your post. It's a shame we can't discuss obvious language bias without you becoming defensive about imagined sleights.
onpensionsterm··on Things I wish everyone knew about Git (Part II)
>Some people automate this: they have a process that runs every few minutes and commits the current working tree to a special branch that they look at only in case of disaster.

This sounds nice. Does anyone have a concrete example?

I'd like to try with a cronjob but it would be useful to avoid having to create the job manually for each repo & I don't want a job repeatedly scanning all my disks. Is there anything like a global post-clone hook? Additionally, I'd be worried about race-conditions from saving work during the job.

onpensionsterm··on Goodbye, shitty Car extends Vehicle object-orientation tutorial (2011)
Not including the racist discrimination example, I'm not sure that this is a bad problem. I believe there is a tendency for us to leave the schooling system and start viewing interviews as though they were our new exams, where failure is your own fault. I argue that interviews are the starting point of a new relationship, so the closest analogy is actually a date. If you're on a date and express your values and the other person rejects you for it, it simply means you don't make a good relationship - even if it's just because the other person has unfair demands.

So don't project programming ideals you don't believe in. If they can't reconcile different opinions, it's their problem. You won't have the conviction or experience to do it convincingly anyway.

onpensionsterm··on Should GitHub be sued for training Copilot on GPL code?
You're describing something that happens regularly. Especially in music.
onpensionsterm··on Should GitHub be sued for training Copilot on GPL code?
If you accidentally recite someone else's work, it's still plagiarism.
onpensionsterm··on “Harbinger households” consistently buy products that get discontinued (2019)
You're rarely going to find good basics in cheap shops because they have to differentiate on 'design'. The same goes for t-shirts, if you want a plain t-shirt you first have to avoid anywhere with surplus graphics, pockets, buttons, whatever.

If you look further you can find high-quality denim and t-shirts in a variety of cuts. Even bespoke. But they differentiate on quality and things that matter to enthusiasts, so a brain poisoned by mass-produced fast-fashion will wince.

onpensionsterm··on Copilot sells code other people wrote
The only one making money here is github. Very few programmers are selling open source code. And programmers are (in)famous for not buying software.
onpensionsterm··on Mundane chores are all the rage in gaming
I'm not sure the qualifier 'in gaming' is necessary. Lots of us spend a our free time doing gardening, DIY, walking or cooking for entertainment.
onpensionsterm··on Please, don't build another Large Hadron Collider

onpensionsterm··on Please don’t let anyone Americanise it (1992)
Which is why non-localised US media can be so successful in other countries, even places where English isn't the first language.
onpensionsterm··on The Google incentive mismatch: Problems with promotion-oriented cultures
That turns the incentive away from creating shareholder value and towards hazing and navel gazing.

There's also the issue of conflating the incentive/reward schemes with the need for roles to be performed. Being good at inverting binary trees won't make you a good manager but when the manager role carries money and prestige then it's the hammer you use to reward the shape rotators.

onpensionsterm··on The Google incentive mismatch: Problems with promotion-oriented cultures
If it was about masculinity itself being irredeemable, the adjective wouldn't be there. Surely a website of programming enthusiasts can figure out parsing?

onpensionsterm··on I stopped advertising and nothing happened
IP isn't free & ad spend doesn't scale with quality.
onpensionsterm··on I stopped advertising and nothing happened
It seems like a disproportionate amount of ad spend is protection money to avoid the Don't Be Evil mob from selling your trademark to your competitors. A search for Total Car Check should not return competitors above the website itself.
onpensionsterm··on Samsung's latest Galaxy A53 is 33% slower than the previous Galaxy A52s
Yes because in 2022 Android is still a sluggy slow hellscape
onpensionsterm··on I decided that I must live my life on my terms
So if you become content with your money and then find you have medical or retirement bills that your contentment failed to plan for, what happens next? Do you choose to be happy about foreclosure? Money is the thing that frees up your time and mental bandwidth for what matters.
onpensionsterm··on Daily steps and all-cause mortality
It takes a phenomenal amount of exercise to be equal to reducing food intake. Reducing cardio to a weight loss method means that people who are unfit but not overweight or strong but relatively sedentary think that they don't need to do it for their health. Then they die of heart disease.
onpensionsterm··on Daily steps and all-cause mortality
In my view, failing to experience training your body and seeing yourself improve is analogous to never finding love, never enjoying art, never enjoying learning. It's a part of the human experience we've evolved dedicated pathways to make us enjoy and opting out of that is a crying shame.
