Where does the idea of materialism fall?
Is the idea of materialism itself part of materialism?
I think the only way to do that would be to have a reentrant lock for each object individually. Isn't that potentially a big performance issue?
I think that is the main reason behind this quote from the article:
> Several attempts have been made over the years and failed to do it without sacrificing single-threaded performance.
Another hint that maybe the big Turing machine isn't quite cutting it might be the experiments showing that gravity isn't quite like 'just' an entropic force but seems to behave genuinely different.
Exactly. It can also be argued that not reproducing is probably the most 'green' thing one can do.
#if !defined(__AVR__) && !defined(__MSP430__)
#warning "Fix this FIFO - ++/-- possibly not atomic!"
#endif
into the header of that thingy then. Save work on small uCs, and be warned when moving it somewhere else.
Seconded. I think this one does a good job at resetting one's worldview to the state of 'what do we actually know?'
More to the point, you might want to have a look at this video from a female, also check out her other videos:
I sincerely hope many people WANT to live in cities.
That said, I do see some value in solar ways in the space savings.
OTOH, the vibe/'cutting edge' in big cities is just a fad/false religion more often than not.
But I do think it is easier to find like-minded people or people to connect to in bigger social groups.
Resonates with me. But I still don't know whether it is really the others or just oneself doing the driving.
So maybe we are going towards a 'Weirdocalypse' now?
While reading the article, it feels to be somehow close to the edge of insanity. For some reason, that seems to happen nowadays when big concepts are put together.
I have this impression this means we are starting to lack new and better language for the stuff that we describe.
Funny how the optimists throw out all the law of conservation of energy and the 2nd law of thermodynamics to make their points. Quite an interesting kool-aid you drank there...
No offense, but could this be selection bias? You have certainly only talked to a selected subset of people..
I think if 80% of the U.S. population would want a thorough reform of their justice system, it would happen.
What exactly would an 'external' factor be for you?
I am MUCH more scared of a nuclear war breaking out over diminishing oil resources than I am about peaceful nuclear energy. That would be mankind's biggest and worst irony.
IMHO, it is bordering on insane to not consider peaceful nuclear energy as someone who is keen on saving the planet.
Sure, conserving, saving, making everything more efficient is fine and laudable. But one still has to support the energy needs of some 7e9 people.
You just basically said that SDI is destabilizing because it will take away MAD. I fail to see how supporting that is rational or sane.
And heterosexual marriage looks more and more like a really stupid idea for guys, with no visible benefit. I guess that is his point?
It wouldn't have maximum entropy, though.
But even in that case, you can only have at most polynomial growth (human habitat spherically expanding with speed of light) instead of an exponential one.
It's gotten to the point where the analogue would be to label oneself a 'stalinist libertarian' (because not all stalinists are like that) or other similar nonsense.
