onel··on Show HN: Helo – An email API from former Postmark folks
Props for taking another shot at this problem. Confused a bit about the pricing, are the in free 1,000 email in total or per month? After that it's $5 per month? And pay per email?
onel··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Breakneck, China's quest to engineer the future. Dan Wang
onel··on Dots: Always-on agents
I'll jump in here and mention Moose OS. It's a debian based open source OS that allows you to run these agents, and whatever OSS container you want. You can start with the hosted version and move to your own box at any time.

I think lock in in is the thing we should try to avoid from now on, especially when it comes to our personal data. Products like muse and dots are attractive when they have a free tier but someone always needs to pay the bill.

onel··on What would a serious AI product look like?
Fortunately, self-hosting is the answer. And more, fortunately, it has become pretty easy to self-host apps and keep your data

Please do share it.

This is a really good story. I love it. Really hope you can share your experience, either blog post or GitHub repo

Fun fact, a lot of software patterns are banned in the EU. Especially pure software patterns.

This is a subject that will come up more often now that self-hosting becomes more common. The developers still need to get paid though, but should that be a subscription or a one-time fee? I honestly don't know, but I feel like a subscription that supports the developer without locking features is a good thing?

If you only pay a one-time fee and no future updates, that is also an option, but that price will be higher because you will need to cover all the features that were developed up to that point. So what are the options here?

onel··on I asked Meta’s Muse for its filesystem and it sent me 6.8GB
As others said, I think this is not a bug or an issue because these are the users files. This would actually be the expected behavior, you should be allowed to see your environments and the files that you create while using it
onel··on Noodle Gallery – Self-hosted photo and video manager forked from Immich
This looks really good. Thanks for reco.

Gonna add it to the moose store for self hosters

onel··on Noodle Gallery – Self-hosted photo and video manager forked from Immich
Immich is great. I love it
onel··on AI coding has made CI a bottleneck, so we reworked ours to keep up
Moose has entered the room.

I built a debian based OS focused on self-hosting: github com/onmoose/os It's not really Linux size but I couldn't have built this if it wasn't for coding agents. Still a ton of work needed on UX but the main functionality works so well.

Linux also has decades of work on it, we can't really expect new products to equal that in 2 years of agentic coding

onel··on Dropbox's Jan 1st 2027 terms of service
That is a great offer if you're only looking for a nextcloud backup. If you also need an immich instance and some jellyfin, you need another machine.

A single purpose service is always more efficient then a more generilized one

onel··on Dropbox's Jan 1st 2027 terms of service
Yeah, definitely not 1-to-1 comparison as moose has a VM underneath and you can run pretty much anything
onel··on Dropbox's Jan 1st 2027 terms of service
Self-host. NextCloud on a moose instance https://mooseos.com/store/nextcloud

1 click install, daily backups, no need to manage anything

onel··on Tell HN: OpenAI keeps re-enabling the 'allow training' setting
This kind of cynicism is not really useful. As much as we can distrust the company, there is a legal minefield to offer this option in the UI and terms of service and not respect it.
onel··on Mercury 2.5
I think we should be happy when this happens as it encourages more players to be active in AI, and us not rely on only two companies
onel··on Jellyfin 12.0
[self promo warning]

jellyfin 12 available as hosted option on malmo. one click install

onel··on Saving money on Google Photos with Immich: Your own personal photo storage
[self promo warning] Setting up self hosting alternatives like immich is still the biggest adoption barrier out there. Most people are not technical. I had the same problem even as a technical personal.

I built malmo to solve that. 1 click install for immich malmo.network/store/immich

Underlying OS fully open source, install it on your own box or use a hosting provider

onel··on Saving money on Google Photos with Immich: Your own personal photo storage
I don't think cost is the main reason you should move. Things like photos, gmail are definitely subsided by google so it's not a fair comparison. It's getting pretty easy to add backup for self hosting so that is becoming the smallest problem. Agree with you, still worth it
onel··on Asked Reddit support to give me API key so I can delete my data. They refused
You can. But it's a more manual process. Under gdpr you can request total deletion of your data
onel··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
Out of all the companies that could have acquired hugging face, I think nvidia is the best fit. If it had to happen, happy it was them
onel··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
Disagree. When it comes to AI, mvidia has been one of the most open labs. They open source a lot things and are open to contributions
onel··on How do I permanently disable random Google Photos popup to backup photos? (2024)
On web I use an adblocker to block annoying google popups, including the Gemini one in gmail.
