onel··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
An operating system for self-hosting

https://github.com/malmoos/malmo

I saw the options out there were not fully open source, or had other limitations so I started working on this better one. Based on Debian, apps are docker containers.

I do work to adapt current open source apps, but it's so great to make them available as one click install.

I want to make it easy to run on a cloud VM or an old PC kept in the pantry. There are so many cases for self-hosting now that we need to make it easier to do

onel··on Irish datacenters now guzzle 23% of the country's electricity
I agree that this title is very opinionated. If the country would have created enough electricity, the percentage wouldn't be a problem
onel··on Irish datacenters now guzzle 23% of the country's electricity
Not really, no. It is one of the most important attributes of good journalism that you have to be as impartial. That's why papers have separate sections for Opinions
onel··on Irish datacenters now guzzle 23% of the country's electricity
For people outside of Ireland: these rates are not the norm. They are usually around 20-22. Can go down 17 if on special plans, or even 12 if you have an electric car.
onel··on What xAI's Grok build CLI sends to xAI: A wire-level analysis
It's a pretty antagonistic way of asking a question man. Don't do that
onel··on How version control will evolve for the agent boom
The problem I see is that git commit meaaages are not as flexible at storing context information as files. Or easier to retrieve. We do have --grep to search them but it's definitely not as poweful as all the tools we have to handle files at the OS level. As verbose as storing specs in files is, I also prefer it
onel··on Chatto is now open source
This looks really nice. Great job.

Looking at adding it to the malmo.network store for self-hosters

onel··on Ask HN: Is GitHub preparing to go behind a login wall?
If you need to just offer free access to your open source repo, gitea is a nice alternative and super easy to self host. Github also has the community, which you lose, true, but it depends on what matters more to you. I can help you setup gitea really fast if you're interested
onel··on AI: The ROI Runway Could Be Long Outside the Tech Sector
I think there is an explosion of new apps, the problem is still distribution in marketing. If I develop a new vibe coded app, it will still take some time for it to be known. And also get good.

Also, what another commenter said that most of new apps are in-house, fully agree with that.

onel··on Immich 3.0
Valid points. But I see self-hosting even as renting a VPS from someone and running the service there. Which solves most of the dev ops problems that I dont wanna bother with. Maybe it's not "actual" self-hosting, but concenient enough to use it
onel··on Germany’s Infineon opens major chip plant as EU seeks tech autonomy
Still pretty useful to build in EU
onel··on Immich 3.0
Great app! Great to see the progress with it.

The biggest complaint has always been how hard it is to self-host it, but that's not true anymore. If you have a good underlying system that handles all the boring stuff, you can actually have a pretty good experience.

I'm biased because I'm building an OS for this, and it makes spinning up imich so easy.

onel··on Immich 3.0
There are simpler options now to self-host these kinds of apps. It's not that hard anymore
onel··on Immich 3.0
This. I think encryption is the job of the underlying operating system not the app running on top of it
onel··on .self: A new top-level domain designed to support self-hosting
That's true. But I think it's the same case as a bad actor owning a domain for himself. They still need to do some policing so it doesn't pull down the whole TLD
onel··on .self: A new top-level domain designed to support self-hosting
I actually think this is a really good concept. There is no perfect solution for what they're trying to do, but I think they have most of the things covered.

Offering one free per person is nice, it can be tricky to enforce but I think doable. Regarding privacy, even right now ICANN rules require a real name and address for the domain.

This project comes at the right time when because I see a lot of interest growing towards self-hosting.

I am biased though, I've been working on on OS for self-hosting , fully open source, Debian based, no restrictions https://github.com/malmoos/malmo

onel··on Hey Nico, you didn't vibe code your data room but stole it from Papermark
I think it's important to care about these things though. You want competition but you also want fair competition
onel··on European Commission's Metsola Overrides MEPs to Force Through Chat Control
This is a push by one individual, or maybe a small group. I don't think we should generalize this to the whole European commission, or the whole EU. Hopefully and most likely it will be shut down if put up for a vote.
onel··on For most of the world, open-source AI is the only way forward
Even if you go with an open source AI model, it will still make a lot more financial sense to pay a provider then actually invest in the hardware to self-host it.

It's definitely worth investing in self-hosting the agent infrastructure around the model though: all the documents, knowledge base, all the connectors, the agent itself to run on your hardware

onel··on PR spam today looks like email spam in the early 2000s
I went over their website in the description and I'm still finding it hard to understand how they work. Do contributors fund the pool that then pays for API cost of using a model?
onel··on Crypto in 2026: Oh, This Is the Bad Place
The kind of coming around story that you rarely see on hn. Props to you for writing this
onel··on Migrate from OpenClaw
It's not really the same thing. They're different tools. Open claw is targeted more towards non-technical people.
onel··on Migrate from OpenClaw
I don't think I share your experience. I've been using open claw for the past 3 months and it has some quirks but it works pretty well. The web UI is not the nicest but it gets the job done and you rarely interact with it through that interface. You use telegram, WhatsApp, discord, etc. The CLI install flow is one of the best I've seen. It really takes you through every single step to set everything up. I've helped organized the Openclaw events in Dublin where we usually have 80 to 100 people come and we've seen great success with the install flow. Especially for non-technical people. The biggest issue was with Windows and WSL but other than that no major problems. It's not perfect but it works pretty well.
onel··on Ask HN: What has been bothering you lately?
Saas subscriptions for something that should be usage based. It's great for the business, not that great of a deal as a user.
onel··on Want your images back? That'll be $5
This is the kind of story that's push people towards self-hosting.

I don't even have an account with photobucket but I fully feel the pain of this user and I got outraged just by reading this.

I think this kind of SaaS business is going to go the way of the Dodo very soon.

onel··on Running local models is good now
Agree with this. Open models are the future but currently they are a pain to run locally.

As painful as it is to admit, the future might be cloud inference from a trusted provider.

onel··on Google Chrome update will close the door on ad blockers
Just because it's working today doesn't mean it will work as well in the future. It's not about the small technical change with deprecating mv2, it's about the direction they are taking Chrome.
onel··on Apple is about to make Hide My Email useless
You can't, no. It's the same story in Sicily. You can only pay for parking using an app, if you don't have a smartphone you just can't park. Luckily the parking app they have is pretty nice, but the requirement is infuriating
onel··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On?
A fully open source operating system geared towards self-hosting: https://github.com/malmoos/malmo

There are some good options out there (umbrel, zima, etc) but none that are fully open source or that have the sinplicity that I am gunning for with this one.

The focus is making it one-click to run your own "life backup" (immich, nextcloud) and also host your own open source SaaS alternatives.

onel··on AI OSS tool repo goes archived over night after raising $7.3M Seed
Your post title is misleading and false. They didn't archive overnight, they raised the money last year, the founder explains in comments.
