oneeyedpigeon··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
No, I'd prefer elected representatives to do that, in the same way they've decided on all the other existing harms we legislate for.

Hang on... Hacker News very clearly has a complex, opaque [1] algorithm that orders stuff. Maybe it's not user-specific, and maybe that's a good dividing line, but these are the kinds of factors we're going to have to think about if we want to introduce regulation around 'algorithms'.

Infinite scrolling is a very different issue (although it's definitely a contributor to the harm, I agree).

([1] Unless I'm being unfair here; maybe the algorithm is available somewhere, I just don't see it obviously linked anywhere)

You can often do that via settings. But we could do with a law that makes it a crime to override a user setting that has been explicitly set, without notifying the user.

I think we can approach this from more than one angle. Yes, it cannot be entirely on parents, but parents should bear some responsibility to not just hand a device over to their children with unrestricted access to the entire internet.

Maybe? I'm not sure since the UK is no longer part of the EU; we're running quite a bit behind on this kind of thing now.

And aren't very imaginative.

If it has to happen, this is exactly how it should. Please feel for those of us in the UK who are currently denied access to some pretty significant services unless we send our passport to a random third party.

I think you've done a great job identifying the three main options and why two of them (parents, censorship-by-default) just will not work. That leaves regulation; the only way we will prevent children—or anyone—from coming to harm is to stop companies from producing this harmful content in the first place.

Either that, or just accept the harm.

oneeyedpigeon··on Em dashes are fucking amazing
Because the impact of something can be felt even when the object doesn't appreciate they are feeling it. People choose fonts for the particular impact they will have on the reader, even though that reader won't think about it.
oneeyedpigeon··on Em dashes are amazing
I think this is a localisation issue; in the UK, it's much more common to see space-surrounded em dashes.
oneeyedpigeon··on Em dashes are fucking amazing
Em dashes don't nest (but that's probably a good thing).
oneeyedpigeon··on Em dashes are amazing
I think it's generally accepted that parentheses are more parenthetical than emdashes.

> I have no reason or desire to change my default branch name

And you're absolutely entitled to. I have no problem with anyone choosing to stick with "master", provided they have no issue with me preferring "main".

oneeyedpigeon··on git's –end-of-options Flag
More meaningful name, shorter to type.
oneeyedpigeon··on git's –end-of-options Flag
There are advantages beyond avoiding the use of a charged term.

Yeah, this is the bit where it really falls down, regardless of how you define "mostly"!

> placing that responsibility on the government will not work either.

I agree, but a) the responsibility is on us all: citizens, government, and the media b) we can definitely introduce regulations that force government to be more open, etc.

oneeyedpigeon··on Advertise in ChatGPT
Copyright infringement used to be illegal in the developed world, then we started building exceptions for AI. There's no reason to expect this won't happen for advertising laws too.

I prefer "Democracy only has value when the majority of voters are informed". This covers your case, but it also redresses the balance to shift blame away from everyday people and onto society as a whole.
oneeyedpigeon··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
I agree that they have different connotations. However, in the absence of other information, I don't see how we could ever collectively agree on a better value. The least subjective option, as far as I'm concerned, is "more than 50%". If a is 50.001 and b is 49.999, then a is the one with the most, not b.
oneeyedpigeon··on Codeberg bans vibe coded projects
I think it's reasonable to assume >50% by default, unless the source clarifies what they mean by "mostly".
oneeyedpigeon··on What AI did to stackoverflow in a graph
It's so weird how slightly different usage can create vastly different experiences and impressions of a site. I wouldn't really describe Reddit as "politically biased to the left", but I never go to the front page, just a few select subs. I don't see any political bias in subs about Hollow Knight or weed. I DO see bias in my country's political site, but it swings all over the place depending on who's in power at the given time.

I see a similar thing on X (well, I would if I still used it) where my personal feed is very, very different from the curated 'for you' one.

oneeyedpigeon··on Command Line Interface Guidelines
Yup, I agree. There seems to have been a trend recently to output a LOT on `cmd` (poor), even more on `cmd --help` (unpaged too: bad), and to not have a man page (terrible!). Every program should have a man page, a bare command should give usage (ideally, a single line), and --help should give a decent short overview (ideally less than a screen height or, failing that, automatically paged).
oneeyedpigeon··on Command Line Interface Guidelines
I find it far more convenient for tools to take options to use a pager, rather than to having to manually type "| less" for every command that I want to behave nicely. Just behave nicely by default; if I want you to behave awkwardly, I'll let you know!

oneeyedpigeon··on Why Vanilla JavaScript
But now we're back at "Not everyone is building complex UIs like google sheets". I agree with the underlying sentiment of this thread: overengineering is way more common than underengineering.

Exactly.

I love the average time! I think it would be quite nice to have a % of how many others found each bonus word too.

You can just click the first letter, then drag through the rest. When I moved from mobile to desktop, I also thought it was click-only, but dragging works in Chrome and Safari.
