oneeyedpigeon··on Example.com just launched the biggest redesign in decades
By typing it or copy+pasting it, which is much more time consuming and much less convenient.

(I actually tried the select, share [sic], open in browser route, but for some reason I only saw opera as an option, not chrome, the browser I actually use for everything. Links still rule.)

What kind of tests would this break? Aside from the advice on the page itself (which, iirc, is new anyway), i'm wondering why any testing would actually involve the contents of design of the page. Just a weird 'sanity' check?

So if I upgrade to the next version of the OS, I absolutely won't get that 20GB+ file downloaded against my wishes, absolute guarantee?
oneeyedpigeon··on I said no and Apple said yes
We all have a line, it's just in a different place. Mine is strongly at the "forcibly stealing huge amounts of disk space for features you don't want" point. As a happy Mac and Android user, I don't recognise the 'make it as hard as possible to escape from their "ecosystem"' description; maybe you can give an example?
oneeyedpigeon··on I said no and Apple said yes
I don't think anyone's asking for a separate version, just an option to turn the AI features off. Even totally aside from the moral points, some of us simply don't have the disk space.
oneeyedpigeon··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
> any speed I'm able to

Well, provided you can still stop in time should the lights begin to change.

oneeyedpigeon··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
(UK experience) If you're trying to cross the road leading onto one, it's much harder to tell if a vehicle is going to hit you at speed. I often observe people turning quickly, without indicating, and had I chosen to cross at that time, there would have been some kind of accident. Junctions tend to not have this problem since cars turning out of them are usually going much slower.
oneeyedpigeon··on The Beauty of Roundabouts
It may be user error, but that doesn't mean roundabouts aren't a footgun. It only takes one driver who doesn't do everything correctly to cause problems. It's not much fun driving around in the correct lane, only for someone to pull alongside you to the left (equivalent of "right" in the US, of course!). I failed a driving test because someone cut across me on a roundabout.
oneeyedpigeon··on GUIs should be fully keyboard-driven
Do you have an example of how supporting a keyboard shortcut for every action could be bad for a general audience?
oneeyedpigeon··on Show HN: Buslens – where can I get to by bus? (UK)
> If you see buses in London disappear from a display

Thanks for that explanation! Was an alternative considered—e.g. marking the bus as "lost" instead of removing it altogether? Discounted because of space constraints?

oneeyedpigeon··on Feature Request: Support AGENTS.md
This used to be a nice place to have sensible discussions. Sadly, it seems, some people want to turn it into Reddit. Please enjoy your day, too; it seems like you could do with your mood improving.
oneeyedpigeon··on Feature Request: Support AGENTS.md
OK, this argument is getting semantic and, therefore, uninteresting. I think you know what I meant, even if I used some words in a different way than you would have liked.
oneeyedpigeon··on Feature Request: Support AGENTS.md
Markdown is still a structure. It may be a very loose one, but it still enables a reader (of any flavour) to, for example, determine which parts of the text are code and which aren't.
oneeyedpigeon··on Feature Request: Support AGENTS.md
I feel like we've missed a trick here. The purpose of AGENTS.md—to make metadata about a project available in a structured format—seems far more valuable than to limit it to just those projects that use AI or those projects that do, but don't require any other kind of automated processing.

Why not iterate on README.md with something like PARSEME.md?

I assume you can adjust the angles so that they only cover your property.
oneeyedpigeon··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
I'm guessing you're in the US; in the UK, door bell cameras are only legally allowed to film your own property.

Nine years ago, precisely because you said:

> a decade and a half ago?

For me personally, the AAA game industry is entirely Nintendo, yes. Half the games I mentioned are cross-platform, though; I know they're not 'AAA', but I don't think this discussion needs to be limited purely to AAAs. And, as I mentioned, there are plenty more games that I could have included.

oneeyedpigeon··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
Which will be incredibly problematic if the manufacturers continue to aim for something unobtrusive. Eventually, just normal spectacle wearers will be the targets of mistrust and, unfortunately, worse.

I do think that people should be legally allowed to make recordings in public, provided they are not harassing anyone. I do not think they are entitled to make those recordings in secret; just have a regulated indicator, like the bluetooth led.

oneeyedpigeon··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
Absolutely this. Even better, if you ever find yourself playing one of the "guys" in this situation, just act pre-emptively and introduce yourself!

> What alternate reality are you living in where the video games industry isn't a charred husk of what it was, a decade and a half ago?

A world that contains Breath of the Wild, Blue Prince, Balatro, Mario Kart World, (you get the point—there are lots of good games).

> Video games are honestly a pretty bad example. 10-20 years ago, you'd buy your video game, and it was a complete item, that you owned and could play for as long as you didn't damage it. Once you were done with it, you could lend it to friends, or sell it and recoup a decent chunk of money for the next game you wanted.

As I said to another commenter, that applies to many of the games I buy today. OK, not quite all since I do buy some titles digitally, but that is my choice.

> They are definitely prettier now and have fancy lighting effects though.

And are much better in terms of accessibility, quality-of-life in general, scope, etc.

oneeyedpigeon··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
I'd like to see your evidence for video games getting more expensive. Even if they were like-for-like (I'll make a case that the average video game is a far better product now than it was in the 90s), they are approximately the same absolute price today that they were 30-40 years ago, without adjusting for inflation.
oneeyedpigeon··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
Fair enough; pretend I said "a computer" instead.

> Video games of yore were actual games you could buy and play with friends. You had a physical copy and never had to renew a subscription, watch ads, or pay anything extra to unlock content. Most games didn't even have a separate launcher. Just run it and play. Updates, when they existed, were small.

That describes at least 90% of the games I play today.

I should have gone with any electrical item, tbh; that would probably have flown here without any dissent. But video games that are nowadays almost always one or two orders of magnitude 'better value' while being approximately half the price they were back in the nineties are still a legitimate example, I think.

oneeyedpigeon··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
In the UK, it was 1984. Regulations were further expanded in 2021.

> It's hard to find a product that hasn't gotten worse or more expensive, even adjusted for inflation.

Hmm. I think it's just as easy to find products that haven't gotten worse or more expensive as it is to find ones that have. For every mars bar, there's a video game.

oneeyedpigeon··on Retraction: The App Store Rejection of the Week That Was a Correct Rejection
Whether he stole it directly, by doing the 'work', or indirectly via an LLM, stealing it is wrong. If you generate something using an LLM, you have a responsibility to ensure you're not infringing on someone else's work.
oneeyedpigeon··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
No, I'd prefer elected representatives to do that, in the same way they've decided on all the other existing harms we legislate for.
oneeyedpigeon··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
Hang on... Hacker News very clearly has a complex, opaque [1] algorithm that orders stuff. Maybe it's not user-specific, and maybe that's a good dividing line, but these are the kinds of factors we're going to have to think about if we want to introduce regulation around 'algorithms'.

Infinite scrolling is a very different issue (although it's definitely a contributor to the harm, I agree).

([1] Unless I'm being unfair here; maybe the algorithm is available somewhere, I just don't see it obviously linked anywhere)
