omscs99··on Musk’s Denial of Ukraine’s Starlink Request Prompts Senate Probe
Starlink isn’t a charity. If the DoD wants to use their resources, then they should negotiate with them as they would with any other business
omscs99··on I got paid to live in Antarctica
> because women do not treat men the way she described anyway.

How would you know?

omscs99··on I got paid to live in Antarctica
If the genders were reversed it would be binned as sexist without any support or regard for context

Why exactly should the expectation of justification go one way but not the other?

Frankly, I’ll take the same standard and apply it the other way. The author is sexist, the article is hot garbage

omscs99··on Ask HN: Turning off the programming mind during non-work hours
I’d say for me a big one is working out of office, when the clock hits 5 (and not oncall) work laptop gets closed and I don’t open it again

It’s really a little thing, but maintaining separation between workplace and home and trying to minimize that overlap works well for me

omscs99··on Ask HN: Turning off the programming mind during non-work hours
Oh wow, maybe I should go into infosec, looks like I’m already there mentally
omscs99··on Everyone Is a Girl Online
What the hell is this thing even saying

Does the author think that redefining a bunch of words makes them “deep” or something? Either make an attempt to be understandable or don’t publish. And shame on wired for dropping the bar so low, you wouldn’t see this type of laughable shit out of a more respectable outlet like new yorker

omscs99··on My editor trashed my inquiry into child sexual abuse. Now I know why.
Maybe it’s permanent for some and not for others? Either way, if you make the argument that it’s temporary, then people will push for stuff like conversion therapy

So ig because conversion therapy is harmful people make this premature conclusion that it’s permanent

omscs99··on Let’s Stop Pretending College Degrees Don’t Matter
Why even bother getting a degree in journalism if all you’re gonna do is churn out blog posts for a living? Why even call it journalism then? Legal protection or something?

Let’s Stop Pretending Journalism Degrees Matter - frankly if all you’re gonna do is sit in some nyc office and shit out the same platitudes, why should I pay for it when I can find the same fecal matter online for free?

omscs99··on Paul Graham calls A.I. ‘the exact opposite of a solution in search of a problem’
Hell, I doubt most businesses even have a functional full text search for internal documents. My job certainly doesn’t, but the SVP feels the need to make noises about LLMs and throw the word “revolution” around

It’s like nobody wants to talk about reasonable solutions that incrementally make things better, everything has to be some meme “revolution”

omscs99··on The unpublished preface to Orwell’s Animal Farm
Two different types of forbidden, one is the top down state driven kind, the other is the puritan witch burning kind. They are not the same
omscs99··on Ozempic Settles the Obesity Debate: It’s Biology over Willpower
It seems really odd how all of these Ozempic articles have been popping up recently. Feels like there’s some shilling going on
omscs99··on Man spends entire career mastering crappy codebase
Unrelated question: do hfts make you move out to east coast, or are there some in California?
