omnisci··on Obama Seeking to Boost Study of Human Brain
Well said! I agree and you are correct that the software used for this stuff pretty much sucks. The thing is that a lot of scientists don't know that the software could be better, and they are reluctant to try new software considering it is so expensive (We just spent $5k on a licence for software that is subpar. I've seen this 91203091283 times and it's disappointing). New software will change the game.

To add to that list, http://www.brain-map.org/ is a reallllllllly nice tool. I love what this company is doing in terms of automating gene expression within the brain and look forward to their software going through some revisions.

omnisci··on Have Scientists Found Two Different Higgs Bosons?
Which is probably the real answer and should be treated as such. I can't stand these "Did science just discover that Jesus was out to lunch with Jay Z?!?!" NO, it didn't.

I don't know if I'm just pissed off today because of the whole CT thing, or because I see more and more mass media outlets posting nonsense about science, but if you have to ask "did xyz discover blah blah blah" the answer is probably no. It's misleading, and poor form to say stuff like that.

Does posting on HN cause BRAIN CANCER?!?!?!? What you don't know about posting on the internet could kill you and your family, twice.....more after a new episode of Modern Family! [/end anger]

omnisci··on A letter to the TEDx community on TEDx and bad science
"It has been published in a peer reviewed journal (but beware… there are some dodgy journals out there that seem credible, but aren’t.)"

Dodgy journals should be omitted from everything relating to science. It's a shame that many of them get picked up by the mass media and blown out of proportion.

Also, the peer review system is so faulted that even bad studies make it into good journals due to politics. Thanks for the post OP, it continues to drive me to get my company started which will hopefully reduce the amount of "bad science" data out there.

omnisci··on Find a cofounder or continue as a single founder...decisions decisions.
A single person can't do all 3 of those things, that makes perfect sense. A single person could, however, hire people to take care of some of those issues. Is that correct or just my being naive?
omnisci··on Command & Conquer in HTML5 with multiplayer

omnisci··on Find a cofounder or continue as a single founder...decisions decisions.
Thanks for the comments. My concerns about a cofounder seem to be consistent with the comments.

I guess I really won't know until I move forward. Right now I have enough basic knowledge (technical, business, and marketing) that I could produce a beta version.

My goals are the following: 1. Make a beta for my users (already have them waiting) 2. ??? 3. Profit. By profit, I mean grab the attention of investors and fill in the blanks (mostly technical) by hiring. From there, if someone works with me long enough, I’d considering bringing them on as a cofounder.

omnisci··on Upgrading RAM on new iMac practically impossible
Everyone here needs to understand that they are talking about a computer WITH an understanding of computers. Ask mom and dad if they want to upgrade their ram. The answer is “huh?”. The concept of upgrading computers doesn’t exist to many MAC (or PC) owners.

Most users don’t give a shit about upgrading. When I was working in support, I remember a kid who had 19238012983 viruses on his computer. We formatted, reinstalled and 3 weeks later he was back again with 6 billion viruses. After formatting again, installing AV etc, he came back a few weeks later with a NEW laptop (back in 2002) because he thought the computer was the issue. He bought a whole new computer because he was too dumb to realize that HE was the problem. Apple sees this, and makes their products to work for those people. And it works. Hard drive died on your MBpro? Ahh man, time to get a new computer. (WTF?!).

Apple takes advantage of this and they do it really well. They purposely build items that you can’t fix/upgrade so you come back to them. Even if it is free, you come to the store and look at all the new stuff…which is enticing. It’s quite brilliant. And this is why I don’t like the company. They are actually encouraging ignorance.

omnisci··on How I ended up with so much Hacker News karma
Well, now that you put it like that, I'm going to collect karma (actually the downvote thing is helpful) like a mofo! :)
omnisci··on How I ended up with so much Hacker News karma
So do you get an award for having high Karma?

I think people put too much weight on things like this. I've been on message boards for over 12 years. People know me because of my name and what I contribute, my karma (which we don't have) or likes or friends don't matter.

omnisci··on Google acquires BufferBox (YC S12)
NYC, 8 million people. Many of them don't have doormen and no where to have their packages delivered. I pay for a mailbox which is somewhat close to my house and I'm lucky that they receive/hold packages for me (during a limited time). THis service is useful for those in large urban environments.

Furthermore, anyone who doesn't want their packages stolen, damaged etc because they aren't home to receive delivery is also a large market.

Yes, UPS does have an area where you can go pick up your package if it isn't delivered, but that is super annoying. I've had to do this many times and not only does their customer service suck, lines are fairly long, and the hours are very limited. It completely negated the point of ordering something online to avoid bad service, lines and store hours.

omnisci··on Windows 8 — Disappointing Usability for Both Novice and Power Users
I've actually wondered this as well. I actually like the DESKTOP portion of Windows 8 and think it is a really nice improvement over windows 7. In fact, if Win8 shipped without metro, I'd buy it right now...happily.

But it doesn't. It comes with Metro, and although I "figured it out", I shouldn't have to. Specifically as I'm comfortable with every OS available, using iOS, android, windows (since 2.0) and OSX. Each one of them requires a bit of learning and tweaking, but I remember opening win8 RC and wondering "how do I shut this off?" Initially I got pissed off because I felt like a child, I had no idea how to find the control panel etc (without using "advanced methods, winkey-r, "control" enter). While every OS has it's weakness, if you can't do basic shit then there is a serious problem.

So, did they conduct usability testing? I also wonder. I'm gonna vote "no" on this one.

With that said, I'm still gonna get it, purely out of curiosity.

omnisci··on Fraud fighter: 'Faked research is endemic in China'
"This is the entire justification for credible journals in the first place." Care to elaborate? I'm not sure I'm getting your point.

Re: You can't wish... You are absolutely correct, it's something that takes an active effort. I'm optimistic that we can lower the impact of poor science that is published in those journals with open communications in science.

omnisci··on How you can do it alone as a solo entrepreneur
This was helpful. I'm in a solo position right now and I'm also not a developer. I have a great idea (according to potential customers), but I don't have the knowhow to make it right now. This article was helpful in giving me hope that I can build something with the right people (which is what I expected, but you hear so many different stories).
omnisci··on Fraud fighter: 'Faked research is endemic in China'
Absolutely, even the concept of less credible journals should NOT exist. The idea that a study is not good enough for a journal with some credibility, so lets get it published in Joe-Shmoe's journal of bad science is insane. Hence why we need a more open, social media based (ie, real time communication) method to communicate scientific data. Aside from the benefits of speed, you have a community of scientist that can talk about the data and if something sucks, it can get called out. I'm hoping this reduces the BS science that gets published and we can start to reserve resources for studies that actually progress knowledge.
omnisci··on Fraud fighter: 'Faked research is endemic in China'
This is what worries me in all science (US included). While I don't think labs are actively going out of their way to make stuff up, I think critical thinking is being replaced "oh shit, I need to publish this before I submit XYZ grant". This is how/why basic research is getting sloppy. Someone publishes a study, it goes through he peer review system of the authors' friends, it gets published and even if everyone hates the paper, it stays out there.

My YC application was made specifically to address this issue and the more I read about this stuff, the more I am motivated to get to work.

omnisci··on Ask HN: Why do you think YC rejected your application?
I'm a single founder with a non coding background looking to make a website.

These are two things that I can fix and I'm planning on doing so before I apply next time. I already have users waiting to use the system, I just need to make it.

If anyone is in NYC and wants to work on a website to change the way scientific communication takes place, hit me up:) I'm going to start being more aggressive in picking up co-founders soon as I need the technical help.

omnisci··on Ask HN: How do I know if I have what it takes?
I think this applies to many technical fields, but what I find is this. Those who "have what it takes" are just those who are motivated and creative. Everything else falls into place if you know how to get around a problem(fix, troubleshoot, bypass). IMO, that is what makes someone special.

The alternative is to just give up, or say "well, you can't do that", or "those things never work".Negativity, lack of motivation and lack of creativity (which is what really drives the negativity) is what makes someone "Not have it." This applies to life in general.

omnisci··on Ask HN: Does today make anyone else nervous?
Hell yes! I can't concentrate. My phone is with me, pushing all of my emails, ringer is on high just incase I miss the notification, and my friends are have emailed/texted me about my application. I feel like I'm expecting a baby right now, every notification gets the "oMG, is this it" reaction. Best of luck to everyone:)
omnisci··on Why aren't we all using Japanese toilets?
I don't use those because I prefer the 3 shells.

Although I've never used one the Japanese toilets, I would be a huge fan of the heated seat portion. If I had the money, that would be a feature I'd enjoy.

omnisci··on CyanogenMod 10.0 Release
Last I checked, CM was free, done by the work of volunteers. Sooooooo, yeah. Either help (if you have the knowledge) or don't complain about it. I'm not trying to be a dick here, but come on, it's free! Don't look a gift ROM in the mouth.
omnisci··on CyanogenMod 10.0 Release
Just a FYI, I had a SG3 for 3 weeks and I recently got the note 2 and I have no complaints. A lot of the tweaks they implemented are pretty f'in awesome and I find myself saying "that makes sense" quite often, so maybe hiring this guy helped.

Thanks for the answers and I'm happy to see that samsung did that. I know for a fact, that if I was a company and someone was making MY product better....for free, that I'd be offering them a job. That is the kind of employee I want in house, self motivated and creative.

omnisci··on Google Fiber is live in Kansas City, real-world speeds at 700 Mbps
I'd like to think that this will remove people from an office enviroment and allow people to work from home more. This is probably a bit much for most people, but is there really a need for you to sit at a desk in an office when you can do the same thing at home? Real time communications (via video) allow for instant communication between employees, and you can easily add someone to the conversation. The implications of something like this are actually quite big. A change to the 9-5 grind (for better or worse will depend on how it's implemented). The impact of this could be significant when you think of all of the things the 9-5 encompasses, for example, getting stuck in traffic at 8:30am.
omnisci··on Google Fiber is live in Kansas City, real-world speeds at 700 Mbps
That is a great suggestion about the DNA analysis stuff. I think with bandwidth like this, alongside the huge jumps that hardware is making, something like that will be possible in the future.

This is actually part of my YC application, to bring advancements in technology (ie, bandwith, interwebnets) to scientific data. With core facilities running huge amounts of samples, and doing it in a consistent manner that is shared in real time, we could really make some improvements to scientific advancements.

omnisci··on CyanogenMod 10.0 Release
I'm assuming people here know a bit more about this than I do, so I'll ask. Why is CM still a 3rd party developer? I'm curious as to why Google/Samsung/Motorola etc hasn't bought them out and applied their talent to make the stock setup better? Honestly, I'd much rather buy a "XYZ phone, CyanogenMod version" over to the stock Touchwiz/SenseUI etc front end. Excuse my ignorance if this is a dumb question.
omnisci··on CyanogenMod 10.0 Release
I have to agree. I had CM7 on my atrix and it saved my phone. I was this close "_" to getting rid of my phone because I was frustrated with the stock OS. CM7 fixed that, and gave my phone the last few months I needed out of it.

I just got the note 2 (which is dead sexy btw), and I"m going to hold off on custom roms until I get annoyed with the stock setup(ie, 2 weeks:) ). Happy to see that CM10 is kicking ass.

omnisci··on Google Nexus 4 Review
This is a tough one, and it really depends on what YOU want. What exactly did you like/hate about your iphone? That will help people respond to your question.

I'll tell you what I tell everyone looking for a new phone. Go play with them. Honestly, that is the best way to find the phone that you want considering most of the specs are similar unless you are a power user (ie, flashing new roms, rooting etc). Put the phone in your pocket, sit down, walk around with it etc and make sure it fits your daily life. This is specfically true for the Note 2 which is f'in huge. For me, it's size wasn't a huge deal and I returned my s3 for a note 2 last night. The note 2 is f'in awesome, but it may not be useful to you.

In response: S3: awesome phone, nice features, a few apps you can't delete (I had the AT&T version, YMMV) but overall a very nice feel. I really liked that phone and although it was large (4.7" screen), it was light and easy to use.

Note 2: LARGE. 5.5" screen..which is too big for most people. It also has a stylus (pen) that you can use to write on it and I really like that feature. however, if you have no use for that feature, don't bother.

Nexus 4: I haven't used this yet so I can't say much. what I can say is that it looks pretty bad ass and I'd highly consider it IF it had LTE connectivity. I live in NYC so LTE is all over the place and the difference between that and 3g is pretty significant. This, however, only matters if you have access to LTE networks.

Overall, I think you can't go wrong with any of the choices you are going to make. If you live in the states, and you are on contract, the S3 is going on sale at BestBuy for $50 on Black friday (2 yr contract required). If money is an issue, I'd almost think that is a no brainer.

To be short, just go play with the phone and see which one you like best. Everyone has an opinion, everyone has their own interests in mind, so the only way to really make the right decision is to just interact with the phone yourself. You aren't going to pick the wrong phone, all 3 of the phones you are interested in are pretty damn awesome:)

Oh and lastly, Youtube! Go search on youtube for the 3 phones and watch reviews.

THAT kind of person.

omnisci··on Offer HN: Tell me what you need, and I'll program it (for free)
I've got an idea that is fairly simple (initially). Can you share a link or something to work that you have done already? I've got a concept that does not have any code written behind it yet, I'd be willing to see what could be whipped up quickly.
