omega3··on Family fight Samsung over fridge odour they say caused dizziness and memory loss
Lead solder perhaps?
omega3··on Reverse engineering Ticketmaster's rotating barcodes
Laser printers have solved this - I don’t expect to change the toner for a decade.
omega3··on Allan McDonald refused to approve Challenger launch, exposed cover-up (2021)
There is a good movie about the Challenger disaster and the follow up investigation from the pov of Feynman: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Challenger_Disaster
omega3··on Mistral raises a $640M Series B led by General Catalyst at a $6B valuation
Perhaps I'm missing something but what's the usp of Mistral, as far as I can see their models aren't competitive?
omega3··on Microsoft CTO: Thoughts on OpenAI (2019)
I found it curious he wasn't cc'd on the response from Satya.
omega3··on How do you make an addictive video game?
Just make a good game, there are plenty of games that don't follow the skinner box/psychological tricks that are extremely addictive e.g. Counter Strike.
omega3··on Fugitive Wirecard COO Jan Marsalek exposed as decade-long GRU spy
> Thing is, the proof EY got from Wirecard was good enough to meet these thresholds

It objectively wasn't. I've never heard of a case where the auditor doesn't independently verify the bank account balance with the bank itself. More reliable evidence reduces the need for additional corroborating evidence. In general the evidence obtained from the company itself wouldn't be considered reliable by itself.

This wasn't some hard to uncover marvel of accounting fraud using complex financial engineering.

omega3··on Fugitive Wirecard COO Jan Marsalek exposed as decade-long GRU spy
> EY believed the documents shown to them. Sloppy for sure, and EY got their amount of flak for it.

There are strict rules and guidelines around verifying an asset. The auditor isn't supposed to "believe the documents" - they need to form an independent opinion.^1

If the auditor is unable to obtain sufficient appropriate audit evidence to verify the asset, they can issue a qualified opinion due to a scope limitation.

omega3··on Berlin TYPE: The official type for the city of Berlin (2020)
I feel that compared to the beautiful examples of train station lettering this looks very generic.
omega3··on Tourists stranded in Australian wilderness following faulty Google Maps route
It looks like indeed there is no overland road to Bamaga.
omega3··on Ask HN: Why do recommender systems not seem good?
This sounds like something written by Nassim Taleb.
omega3··on Mysterious 280M-year-old fossil is mostly just black paint
I find this article frustrating to read. Here are the important bits:

> Conclusion: T. antiquus is a forgery [...]

> Part of the fossil, at least, appears to be genuine—the long bones of the hind limbs [...]

omega3··on Tai chi reduces blood pressure better than aerobic exercise
It's better than most of bullshido videos but it's obvious that the greco wrestler is acting and not really trying: no head control, no wrist control, high center of gravity, dramatic throws.
omega3··on Sora: Creating video from text
Out of all the examples, the wooly mammoths one actually feels like CGI the most to me, the other ones are much more believable than this one.
omega3··on Hi everyone yes, I left OpenAI yesterday
Could you share your findings re what questions to ask?
omega3··on Amazon Prime Video content to start including ads next year
-> Accessibility -> Vision -> Motion ->

Agreed, no other reason other than to make it harder to find, shameful.

omega3··on Willingham sends Fables into the public domain
I was interested in the technicalities around releasing something into the public domain and found that there is precedent and case law around it already in the US:

“[T]he author or proprietor of any work made the subject of copyright by the Copyright Law may abandon his literary property in the work before he has published it, or his copyright in it after he has done so; but he must abandon it by some overt act which manifests his purpose to surrender his rights in the work, and to allow the public to copy it.”[0]

omega3··on How to calculate how much water you should drink
After having a kidney stone removed I've implemented some simple rules: glass of water after waking up and before going to bed, glass of water with meals, drinking during physical activity and then during the day I monitor my urine color and drink a glass of water straight away when if it's dark.
omega3··on YouTuber who staged plane crash faces up to 20 years jail
They should follow the money and look into the sponsor as well.
omega3··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
> If you weren’t a paying customer, refuse to become a paying customer, and refuse to watch the ads, they don’t gain anything by having you as a user. It only costs them to retain you.

omega3··on It looks like GPT-4-32k is rolling out
How do this even work if the code also uses external libraries?
omega3··on Show HN: Remove sponsored content in YouTube videos
Some (most) of the YouTube content is of such a poor quality that I feel that I should be the one getting paid to consume it.
omega3··on People who use Notion to plan their whole lives
Notion is far from ideal but I use it for note taking and knowledge storing. I want clean UI, set of functionalities included out of the box, I don't want to be editing in Markdown, I like how the blocks are modular so that they can be rearranged on the screen, I like Notion automation(buttons) and databases. As long as you're not trying to "plan your whole life" in Notion it's a good product.
omega3··on Russia killed its tech industry
What Netflix movie?
omega3··on OpenAI’s policies hinder reproducible research on language models
You have a typo in the prompt: appropriately. I wonder if it makes any difference to the output.
omega3··on GoDaddy: Hackers stole source code, installed malware in multi-year breach
> I am able to see that the registrant is based in New York. GoDaddy is based in Arizona. (...) From what I can see, it does not look like the domain name is listed for sale via GoDaddy or its network.

Doesn't sound like much of an investigation. It has happened to so many people (including myself) that either they do it themselves, allow third party access to domain search or their employees are able to do it.
