omd··on Sexism In The Tech Industry Takes Center Stage
Extremists? Is that what you call anyone who isn't a sexist like you? And what does SRS have to do with anything? I left reddit to get away from the r/mensrights freaks like you so you might want to keep your bullshit there.
omd··on Why I’d rather write in Medium than my personal blog
Only because Medium hasn't accumulate‎d enough free content yet to disclose how they are planning on appropriating and monetizing it.

Don't forget Medium is brought to us from the makers of Twitter, with such classics as "Here's an API; get the fuck off of my API."

omd··on Drug Agents Use Vast Phone Trove Eclipsing N.S.A.’s
It's a concept rather than a specific quote: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_Constitution
omd··on Uber drivers file class-action suit over tips
This already exists. It's called a taxi company.
omd··on Uber drivers file class-action suit over tips

omd··on Calling the NSA: "I accidentally deleted an e-mail, can you help me recover it?"
If you're working as a company representative, either in retail or customer service or answering the NSA hotline, then listening to questions and complaints is exactly what you were hired to do. If you take those complaints personal then you should find another line of work.
omd··on The American-Western European Values Gap
Talk about smugness.

>Opinions are just that - opinions.

Except when they're not in line with yours apparently. wow.

omd··on Twitter hands over data to ID racist users
>That Twitter would hand over your identifying information because they don't like the contents of your tweets?

Twitter refused to hand over the data until the French court forced them to.

>The idea that governments can prohibit the written expression of thoughts and ideas?

I have no problem with governments prohibiting hate speech. I have never felt suppressed by these laws because I have never felt the need to express hate speech online or offline.

> "But others who have just as much rights as you and do want to send out distasteful tweets DO feel suppressed."

Good. The majority of people in my country agree that living in a respectful society is more important than having the freedom to say things that you wouldn't want to say. You can find that overly restrictive but then so are traffic lights, queues at the supermarket, clothing, and doors.

>Or was it the distasteful tweets of some bigots (or perhaps more likely, just unfunny and immature people) about the jews?

That's just being willfully ignorant.

omd··on Ask HN: European Linode / DigitalOcean alternatives
We switched from Linode to http://www.cloudvps.com last year because they are in my home town here in The Netherlands and the prices are almost half of Linode's. We have some high traffic websites running with them and have had no problems so far.
omd··on Yelp Hipster Finder
It looks to be the plain ole Google Maps API:

omd··on NeoCities
Nah, OP seems to be doing just fine. I feel more sorry for the people who forgot how to laugh.

omd··on Estimated Cost to Store All US Phone Calls Made in a Year
According to their latest tax returns Facebook and Apple have a net loss in the US so if anything they should pay the government a commission for sending customers to their more profitable offices in Ireland and the Caribbean.
omd··on Your idea sucks Why don't we be more honest when networking at startup events?
I don't believe ideas are inherently good or bad. A lot also depends on timing and execution. Twitter turned out to be a great idea, but I don't think there are many people who could have pulled it off the way Jack Dorsey and his cohorts did.
omd··on Reddit co-founder on NSA snooping [video]
I think it's time we give up on the idea of communicating privately over a centralized network. Wiretapping was invented only a few years after the invention of the telephone[1]. It won't be stopped by technology and certainly not by legislation. People need to get used treating the Internet as a public space: cover your mouth when you cough, don't pick your nose in public and don't communicate sensitive information over the Internet.

The next big thing (hopefully soon) will be communication through a decentralized, infrastructure-less device.

omd··on EasyPost (YC S13) Response to PRISM Accusations
We too would like to make known we do not share any of the high quality client data we have available but we're always open to offers. #callmemaybe
omd··on US surveillance revelations deepen European fears
We lack the budget because that's the government we voted for. And the reason we don't spend a third of our budget on defense is not because we can't but because we don't want to.

I'm glad we don't have a mass-surveillance system and I would like to keep it that way. I don't get this attitude of "we're no better so who cares". What the US government does in the US is their business and what ours does here is our business, but when a foreign government starts spying on me that pisses me off. I wonder what your reaction would be if it was China reading your emails.

omd··on Sources: NSA sucks in data from 50 companies
Facebook and Google have always been the least transparent imaginable AND they're both in damage control mode AND they're obviously under some DHS gag order. So why anyone would give any credence to a word they say is beyond me.
omd··on Monsanto gives up fight for genetically modified plants in Europe
>If you just mean that patent enforcement is inherently scummy and antagonistic, well, I have no snappy response for that.

Well then finally we can all agree that Monsanto is detrimental to the development of GMOs. No one is claiming that Monsanto is "waiting for the wind to blow IP-encumbered seeds onto fields", so that might explain why you can't find any evidence of it.

What people do have a problem with, is a patent troll and a litigious one at that. That's what Monsanto is and there are plenty of cases to prove it:

omd··on Facebook agrees to block sexual assault 'humor'
Trying to keep a certain level of civil discourse on a social website is not a slippery slope. Banning rape jokes is not a slippery slope. For as long as I can remember Facebook has had the option to report posts about:

- Hate speech or symbol

- Spam or scam

- Graphic violence

- Drug use

- Nudity or pornography

That is not trampling the First Amendment. There are plenty of other hate forums where people who are afraid of a slippery slope can freely enjoy and share rape jokes.

omd··on Margins on website development are shrinking
I've had the same experience the past few years with car maintenance.

- I can find any owner's manual online.

- I can find detailed instructions for any type of repair in written form or in a Youtube video.

- There are free online courses for anything from changing a tire to becoming a full-fledged mechanic.

- I can find and order any part of my car at wholesale prices.

- The same diagnostic software that repair shops use can be downloaded for free. I can hook up my iPad to my car through a simple USB cable and find out exactly what's wrong with it.

And I still take my car to the local auto repair shop, because I'm not a mechanic.

omd··on School experiment finds cress won’t germinate near router (Danish)
Here's a crazy thought. What if they use this opportunity to teach kids about the processes of scientific discovery and how it is sometimes based on pure chance. What if they then teach those kids about the scientific method and how to conduct a controlled experiment. Even if the story turns out to be a dud I guarantee the experience would make the students much more excited about science than growing some cress in a window sill.

Or we could explain how a bunch of scientists are crackpots for even thinking such a thing.

omd··on Tumblr May Reject Yahoo’s $1.1B Acquisition Offer For Being “Too Low”
1 billion is the new 1 million.
omd··on Female Engineers: Too Fit For The Role
Oh god, another article about gender equality on HN. You would have better luck selling Bieber tickets on a death metal forum.
omd··on IRS targeted groups critical of government
At least we can all agree that this story, just like Benghazi, comes from, as you put it, crazy right-wing paranoia.
omd··on What Happens When Publishers Invest In Long Stories
News media already use this format for developing stories, called "live blogging". That's what the article refers to with the term "slow live blogging". Like you said, it's slowly evolving rather than breaking news.
omd··on Why employees shouldn't have hours
Unions were created to counterbalance corporate power. To say we should get rid of unions because they're not perfect is just idiotic. Ever since unions have been all but crushed in the US, labor protection laws have disappeared, strikes have become mostly illegal, staff can be fired at will and union members are intimidated. Maybe the answer is to get rid of corporations?
omd··on A hidden world, growing beyond control
It seems beyond outrageous to me. 200k news articles is the amount of news that is produced by 7 billion people in 200 countries worldwide. Those 50k reports is what comes out of counter terrorism by one just of those countries. That's not including the usual declassified military or police reports. There is 1 person for every 400 Americans producing and/or reading these reports. That is more than the total amount of law enforcement officers in the entire US. Tracking every email in and out of the US which seemed impossible before, seems rather trivial now.
omd··on Why Chemotherapy That Costs $70,000 in the U.S. Costs $2,500 in India
I knew it was just a matter of time before American xenophobia came to HN.
omd··on Why Chemotherapy That Costs $70,000 in the U.S. Costs $2,500 in India
Such a useless comment. Everything you mentioned was arrived at by research which everyone shared when the vast majority of the research was happening...
