olouv··on My professional opinion as a blockchain researcher: I don’t see the point (yet)
I find the article a bit too focused on the financial aspect of blockchain technologies. Yes, Bitcoin is a payment system but the underlying technology goes way beyond the financial sector.

I would not say that having a safe ledger that we all can trust without question for our democracies around the world a solution to a "non existant problem", just look at recent elections.

Scalability/Performance issues should not be taken too much into account today, as we're still in the infancy of these technologies and can be pretty sure that they will radically improve over time.

olouv··on Learn to Code Ethereum DApps by Building Your Own Game
To me it's like the limitations of first game consoles (1kB usable RAM for the NES). Having great games work on it needed quite crazy coding skills and several hacks to use less space.

Ethereum is still in it's infancy today and it does indeed have a very slow processing power and speed. But you can bet on the fact that it will improve exponentially.

Do you remember the first hard drives? 56K Internet speeds? IE6 browser? So many challenges have been overcome during the last decades in tech, why would it stop here?

There is a lot of brillant and very-well funded people working on the subject and they will find solutions to improve the platform. No doubt about it.

I always find it odd that such a tech-craving population as HN readers always seem to miss the bigger picture.

olouv··on To Slow Global Warming, We Need Nuclear Power (Op-Ed)
I'd recommend anyone interested in this question to watch "Into Eternity" (available on YouTube), a documentary about the facility Finland is building to house all of their country's nuclear waste.
olouv··on Ask HN: Tabs or Spaces?
Spaces! https://github.com/airbnb/javascript#whitespace--spaces
olouv··on State of Bootstrap 4 vs. Foundation
I've been a big fan of bootstrap, but I find that these CSS frameworks are becoming more and more irrelevant in the age of widespread flexbox support. CSS modules do put the last nail in the coffin.
olouv··on Webwatch
I've built the same thing using NodeJS a couple of weeks ago, with phantomjs support (javascript execution), mandrill (emailing) & and some other nice options: https://github.com/mgcrea/node-web-watcher
olouv··on Why I wouldn’t use Rails for a new company
One upside is clearly that it helps attract raw talent more easily with a hot/trendy stack, and to me, it's a more exciting adventure overall (more risky though).
olouv··on Why I wouldn’t use Rails for a new company
Have you tried bluebird? It solved all my issues with async workflow in NodeJS, crazy-fast performance coupled with a very nice lodash-like API that makes working with data a breeze.
olouv··on 2 years with Angular
Regarding dirty-checking, this stackoverflow answer by Misko might help understand the reasoning behind it: http://stackoverflow.com/a/9693933/520129
olouv··on Stellar
The password recovery scheme is so poorly designed, that's borderline scary: You can't use the recovery code sent by email after registration without validating your email first (but since you have the code, your email is obviously valid)... which requires you to login (but if you don't have your password, well, you can't log in)... Great!... one lost account for me.
olouv··on Show HN: Unioncy – Keep an automated record of your things
Asking to get read/write access on my GMail box right away is a non-starter for me. I get that it may help you auto-populate my database, but you really should avoid asking it without any proper popup explaining why you must have this authorization.

Ideally you should use a two-step authorization phase, basic-info only for login/registration, then once the user gets to see the interface, have a button to extend permissions to read GMail.

olouv··on BBC staff ordered to stop giving equal airtime to climate deniers
I've always had mixed feelings regarding man-made climate change, seeing it as a marketed mainstream show. For me, this broad, somewhat blind, frightening threat is the ecological equivalent of the idea of terrorism.

I can't help myself to think that there are a lot of other ecological issues, even more critical, and affecting our societies today. Water/soil pollution for instance does kill millions of people a year.

People are scared by the carbon dioxyde they exhale, while they eat polychlorinated biphenyl and a thousand more toxic chemical compounds on a daily basis.

I don't think anyone wins when you remove/censor contrarian views.

olouv··on Animals in the wild found to use running wheel if given the choice
I'd highly recommend the Blackfish documentary about killer whales regarding mammal emotions (trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OEjYquyjcg).

Especially this part where a mother is separated from its baby, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWFo6kf21Hw ; it gives pretty good insight about whether animals can experience emotions.

olouv··on Docker 0.11 Released
It's a real PITA that the first thing you do when you start experimenting with docker is to have to find out about this missing clean command and to design a custom alias to fit your needs. In my case, I was expecting it (eg. `bower cache clean`, `npm cache clean`). Regarding the unclear intent, that's what cli help is for! `docker clean` could output it by default.
olouv··on AngularStrap v2.0
You can use totally custom templates for every directive and it should basically work out of the box for most of them (with some proper CSS style of course).
olouv··on AngularStrap v2.0
The distributed code is parsed by gulp-ngmin so you can minify it safely: https://github.com/mgcrea/angular-strap/blob/master/dist/mod...
olouv··on AngularStrap v2.0
Updated the docs to add a more descriptive tagline, thanks for the feedback.
olouv··on AngularStrap v2.0
You can use the "useNative" option, `data-use-native="1"` to active a fully native component if available (iOS/Android).
olouv··on AngularStrap v2.0
That's not true either, I (mgcrea) was more than happy to merge efforts with the UI team. We started a joint repository with the UI-team and I did commit a lot (time, work, PRs) there. Unfortunately the UI team did not have the time (or will) to debate and work on it at the time, several months passed, I ended up quite alone there and finally we decided to part our ways. UI team got back to work on their existing codebase, and the work I had made there (several PRs) became the initial seed for the AngularStrap v2 full rewrite.

Have a look at the (dead) issue tracker if you're interested by the insights : https://github.com/angular-widgets/angular-bootstrap/issues?...

olouv··on AngularStrap v2.0
Author here, the main difference is that AngularStrap has been rewritten from the ground up to leverage ngAnimate that came with AngularJS 1.2+, so it's leaner and brings way more flexibility on widget view lifecycle. When ngAnimate gets better thanks to the work of the core team, AngularStrap gets better too! For instance v1.2.9 brought requestAnimationFrame support to ngAnimate, every AngularStrap directive got smoother thanks to it. Both project have no external dependency, only the Bootstrap CSS styles.
olouv··on AngularStrap v2.0
That's not true: "With no external dependency except the Twitter Bootstrap CSS styles, AngularStrap is lighter and faster than ever as it does leverage the power of ngAnimate from AngularJS 1.2+!". Please do read the docs.
olouv··on Facebook acquires Oculus VR
Same here, I've already sent an email regarding a refund. I had big dreams for this company, it just feels wrong. I'm not happy to see theses conglomerates grow uncontrolled, sucking up the spirit of innovation and openness that are so critical to our future.
olouv··on The Problem With Photorealism
Reminded me this "What Is Real" trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dnw9dWISvw), I welcome any trick that can help the player's immersion.
olouv··on OpenBSD will shut down if we do not have the funding to keep the lights on
That bothers me too, what if they are mining bitcoins with the energy/funds? That wouldn't seem too far-fetched for unaudited tech-savy people.
olouv··on AngularStrap gets rewritten - AngularJS 1.2+ native directives for Bootstrap 3
Not really fond of Bootstrap's collapsing system, but there is a pending issue regarding this, so I might tackle it very soon.
olouv··on AngularStrap gets rewritten - AngularJS 1.2+ native directives for Bootstrap 3
Author here, it would end up hardcoded anyway as it must be pre-loaded for performance reason.

But indeed, it could be compiled in a separate file to reduce the payload in case you don't use base templates, but at the cost of an extra http request, not sur the trade-of would be worth it.

I may add other build configurations at a later date, but for the sake of simplicity, I think it's best as it is for now.

olouv··on Keynote I Love You (But You're Bringing Me Down)
Agree, try it out (http://cl.ly/1W3k1l181b1B), share if you like.
olouv··on Earn $4 in bitcoins for any commit to sferik/t, a command-line Twitter tool
Got a tip putting the tip4commit link in the readme...! http://tip4commit.com/projects/143

Not sure this is intended behavior.

Shouldn't the owner of repositories be out of scope (or at least make it configurable)? tipping myself minus the commission is no fun ;-).

PS: would make sense to have a signup via github

olouv··on Earn $4 in bitcoins for any commit to sferik/t, a command-line Twitter tool
Awesome! It looks like a virtuous circle for both open source & the bitcoin network. Really hope this will take off. However, in my opinion, you should definitely switch to mB (mili-bits), and please add retina icons for the readme. I just added one of my projects there (github.com:mgcrea/angular-strap), this will be quite interesting to watch!
olouv··on Bank of America's Research Report on Bitcoin [pdf]
Since diamonds can easily be industrially synthesized, it's not a finite resource nor a good example for bitcoin, the usual analogy is digital gold.
