okuntilnow··on Meta loses bid to dismiss US states' claims that FB, Instagram addict children
I'm sure that it's right! I've no doubt gambling advertising firms will have been happy to see it over the line to get them off the hook. Hard to argue for a ban on gambling ads if kids (allegedly) can't see them anyway.

I've heard this so many times. That age gating in AUS was started by lobbying from an advertising firm is a gross simplification / distortion of the facts but a good example of how easily misinformation spreads on the internet. People love a conspiracy.

No doubt that it will be good news to gambling advertisers, but the push for age verification was already underway in 2020, well before government recommended an end to gambling advertising (2023).

It's a neat explanation, so an easy sell, but doesn't match the chronology.

But when governments do regulate (UK, AUS etc all) - people cry foul.

Appload and Xovi open up a range of options. You can build a simple frontend in QT and have a backend in a language of your choice serve as an API. Appload handles the display / xochitl for you. I've built tons of little apps like this - and bigger ones.

Installing these used to be a bit of a hassle, but ReManager and Vellum make it a breeze: https://github.com/rmitchellscott/reManager

okuntilnow··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
Only with an extension, at least in the UK.
okuntilnow··on ReMarkable firing up to 40% of their workforce
Yeah, that’s fair.

I really like their pdf viewer. It can be slow on complex documents, but I find it much easer to navigate around compared to the one on Supernote and Boox devices.

Their ebook reader though.. that really does suck. It’s had basically zero improvements in as long as I can remember, despite B obviously being a core feature for many people.

okuntilnow··on The “small web” is bigger than you might think
There are images in geminispace, and audio, and (probably) video. It's just not inline. One of constraints of the protocol is that pages cannot load content without your express say-so.
okuntilnow··on Remarkable Pro Colors
The good thing about the Remarkable is that it’s basically just a Linux machine and you have root access. There’s a great community of folk building extra functionality and tools / apps for it.
okuntilnow··on Imgur geo-blocked the UK, so I geo-unblocked my network
It’s another good example of internet sentiment being far different to popular sentiment.

Polling shows around 70% supported it, though far fewer thought it would be effective. Pretty much matches my views on it.

okuntilnow··on Parisians vote in favour of tripling parking costs for SUVs
Is an SUV needed for two children? I can accommodate my two children (and the dog if required) in my smallish hatchback.
okuntilnow··on ReMarkable: The Tool I Use to Enhance My Productivity – Cal Newport [video]
Possibly, but it's not really sync anyway. You can pull and push documents, but there's no synchronisation.

Not worth paying extra for.

Writing latency on the current generation of eink devices is good enough not to be noticeable.
okuntilnow··on ReMarkable: The Tool I Use to Enhance My Productivity – Cal Newport [video]
If you buy the accessories third-party, the cost of the device is cheaper than most other 10" eink writing pads.
okuntilnow··on Generate RSS feed for any website using CSS selectors
Huginn is an another useful tool that allows you to wrangle CSS selectors and XPath nodes to create RSS feeds.

I use it quite successfully to get data out of undocumented APIs and out into RSS.

okuntilnow··on Ask HN: What Happened to Pinboard (Dec '22 edition)?
I use, like and pay for Pinboard. I don't use the archiving feature though - it's just a dump for links, and it does that very well.

I do worry that it's going to go kaput from neglect at some point, so it would be nice to see a bit of development and get these issues fixed. But either way the level of outrage here is a bit OTT. It's not life or death, it's just bookmarks.

okuntilnow··on Ask HN: What social media site could replace Twitter?
Personally, I don’t think we need a twitter replacement. Mastodon is nice, but ultimately suffers from the same problems but at smaller scale.

I think it’s more likely that users will move to smaller communities - Discord, Telegram & WhatsApp groups etc.

I’m surprised that Whatsapp hasn’t developed better community functions.

okuntilnow··on Ask HN: Meal Planning App?
I use Grocery on iOS for recipes and shopping lists. It does inventory management, but I don't use that so can't tell you how well it works.

okuntilnow··on The mesmerising murmurations of Europe’s starlings
I'm just north of you, and they are the most common bird in my garden. Perhaps there is something about Lincoln that they don't like? Though I can't imagine what, because it's a lovely place.
okuntilnow··on Major breakthrough on nuclear fusion energy
Solar takes up quite a lot of space, but most importantly only works for a portion of a 24 hour cycle.
okuntilnow··on Ask HN: Is there any RSS app with a blacklist / mutelist?
You’ve got a few options on the self-hosted front. TT-RSS and FreshRSS both have quite advanced filtering systems that allow you to highlight or mute articles.

Most of the paid options have similar functionality, including Feedly, NewsBlur & Feedbin.
