ohwp··on The new PHP
With previous versions very stable, testable and modern applications could be built as well.

Things like object type hinting can help building stable apps but imho it is still the work of the programmer that can break or make it.

ohwp··on Email (let's drop the hyphen) (2003)
Startup opportunity: Secretary, a service that reads your incoming e-mail and holds unimportant e-mail to release it to your inbox every 3 months...
ohwp··on [dead]
Most of these logo's aren't bad, most of them are ugly.

A logo is a 'word' to define a single 'entity'. So the bad logo's in that list are the ones that define more than one 'entity'.

But ugliness doesn't define a bad logo.

ohwp··on Space Elevators Are Possible
Another problem never answered: Do we have the resources (funds and material) to create the amount of material needed?

Lets say the cable is 1m2 thick: 1m2 * 100000m (Kármán line) = 100000m3. Maybe this doesn't sound like a lot until you check the prices of nanotube-like materials.

ohwp··on Putin on the Ritz
Searching for 'putin heineken' gives me images of Putin dressed as an astronaut drinking beer:

https://www.google.nl/search?q=putin+heineken&tbm=isch

So there are your pics and it did happen

ohwp··on Show HN: I redesigned the Microsoft employee badge
Its controversial because it takes a lot of effort to get it right. For 50 employees it can be done by hand but not so for over 10.000 employees.

Maybe you could use face detection to get the right crop center but even then there will be a lot of errors and waisted cards.

Most people have a valid ID picture so it's easiest to use that one.

ohwp··on Show HN: I redesigned the Microsoft employee badge
A lot of designers make one big mistake. They design the content too. But content can't be designed.

For example the name. All his designs use short names because they look beautiful. But in real life names can be much longer.

And ofcourse the pictures. It's nice to have round pictures but it is almost impossible to get nice round pictures from every employee.

So when you are designing (and this doesn't only apply to graphic design): test your design using a lot of different content:

Will it still work with longer names?
Will it still work with middle names?
Will it still work with bad / rectangle pictures?
ohwp··on List of possible changes, updates, additions for PHP 6
Well I was thinking about Python when I wrote my comment :)

One of the problems with Python is that they almost encouraged writing code in 2 and porting it to 3. Also: Python 3 is almost a complete different language.

It would be the same when PHP6 would use a + as string concatenation. Such changes would turn it into a complete different language.

ohwp··on List of possible changes, updates, additions for PHP 6
For me the pros/cons balance is still heavy on the pros side. So yeah I'm starting PHP projects in 2014. And as in every other language your own skills are the biggest bottleneck.
ohwp··on List of possible changes, updates, additions for PHP 6
Sometimes I wonder how important backward compatibility is. A lot of <=PHP4 libs wont run on a modern server so there are already compatibility issues.

Maybe PHP6 could be a complete cleanup. And maybe the focus shouldn't be on backward compatibility but on running <6 and 6 side by side.

ohwp··on A 60-Hour Work Week is Not a Badge of Honour
The author is right but I think he misses an impotant point. The bigest problem is that people think there work is there identity.
ohwp··on Drop the ego and prove "I could make that so much better"
Don't you?

I've got a list of things that I think could be improved. For instance:

The interface of the remote control? Could be improved for elderly.
The price of a CNC router? Could be cheaper.
The atmosphere of that bar? Could be nicer.
Easy to say, hard to do.
ohwp··on Why I'm Done With Social Media Buttons
HN doesn't have a share button. But somehow a lot of stuff is shared on this site...
ohwp··on Free unlimited rebooting experience from vintage operating systems
Nice!

Seeing this page made me notice the professional look of Windows 2000 Professional. I wonder why. I don't think it has to do with the word 'professional' but with the blue color and the white top. Also the gray is warmer than most Windows versions.

ohwp··on How smoking weed is still legal for tourists in Amsterdam
Dutchmen here. No you cannot have or grow plants. This is still illegal. They might shelve the case when you are having 5 plants or less. But above 5 they always make a case of it.

And yes Ketamine (Special K / Vitamin K / Kokaine) is used as party drug, but alcohol, weed and nicotine are used most followed by XTC and cocaine.

ohwp··on What Snow Tells Us About Creating Better Public Spaces
I think this is what Christopher Alexander did at the Eishin Campus.

The first year they didn't pave. Only after a clear route was created by the students they paved that route.

ohwp··on Show HN: Random Street View
"so many locations seem to have... not much going on"

I think that's a problem today. We have a lot of things shouting at us. And when we are in the open we think nothing much is going on. But take a closer look ... ;)

ohwp··on Show HN: Random Street View
What about "Haha, Well you're certainly not going to create a 3D point cloud of every street in the world"...

Google's self driving cars are just doing that.

EDIT: I can't find the post I once read, but this post also makes some clear: http://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20130502024505-99...

EDIT 2: Here a video of the presentation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXylqtEQ0tk @ 3:30 you can see the generated (and stored) point cloud.

ohwp··on We spent a week making Trello boards load fast
About events: a nice trick is to add event listeners to the window only and check the event.target.

This method is used in game dev a lot.

ohwp··on A US judge rules Samsung 'infringed' Apple's auto-complete text patent
I'm reading the patent and can't believe it was approved.

Maybe I don't understand the patent but it seems Apple patented that the auto-complete suggestions are shown under the input field.

So this is all about interaction design.

ohwp··on Utah is Ending Homelessness by Giving People Homes
I think this is why Utah is also providing a social worker to each person.
ohwp··on Beats Music launches
Why would I like to listen to curated music !?

Problem is: I like some harcore, some jazz, some classical, some punk. Taste is very personal. That's why I like to curate my own music.

ohwp··on Smoking is Worse Than You Imagined
"The "smoke" from e-cigarettes is just vapour"

No it's not. "The levels of the toxicants were 9–450 times lower than in cigarette smoke"

ohwp··on So do Ethernet cables have their own sound?
When I first read the article I was thinking that analog audio was send over those cables. I could not believe the article is about digital signals.

It's amazing how some people are fooling themselves.

ohwp··on Bootstrapping Your Startup: Do You Really Need Early Investment?
The book "The Incredible Secret Money Machine" (ISBN 0672215624) is my resource for bootstrapping advice. And I have to agree with Don Lancaster: try to bootstrap without early investment.

The case of Everpix is a great example. With an early investment it's very hard to keep track of your startup's feasibility. And your startup is tied to the original plan (your promise to investors). So it's very hard to make changes when you discover the startup plan isn't working.

ohwp··on Telegram - secure, free messaging
"I never gave anyone (especially not the users of WhatsApp or Telegram) permission to upload my personal information to any cloud services."

On Android you do by granting rights to access your contacts and give full network permissions. So you never know what a program will do with your contacts and a network connection.

ohwp··on Boys and Girls may get different breast milk
Why do you think this article is about keeping women down?
ohwp··on Why Are Americans Staying Put?
Lately I have to think a lot about what context switching does to me. It is known that a lot of context switching is turning you in a kind of 'stoned' state. These days the world is bloated with stimuli and I think that's one of the reasons it's hard to keep a fresh mind.

Without a fresh mind it's hard to make choices. Choices to move for example.

Maybe people are also staying put because they just can't think clearly about the choices they have.
