ohwp··on The End of Food?
Also: he ate fastfood for some time, started with 'healthy' Soylent and noticed he felt better. So I think he got the wrong reference. But ofcourse there is also a lot of sweet marketing talk in the article.
ohwp··on Make Your Own Grid Paper
Most of the time the 'smart' printer software is to blame. But I think if you stick to world units and print at 100% you will be fine.

Remember that dpi only controls print quality not print measurements. One cm printed at 300dpi will have the same length as one cm at 72dpi.

ohwp··on Burying the URL
As a developer I need to SEE the url as well. A lot of time I need to check get params. Also when hovering a link I need to see the full url in the status bar.
ohwp··on Ask HN: Do you own a 3d printer? What has been your experience?
Ultimaker Original. I think its one of the best. Also very hackable. But I discovered 3d printing is hard. Sometimes you have to make a lot of test prints to get the right settings for a piece. But overall its a lot of fun and very nice for prototyping.
ohwp··on Home Built Laser Projector (2004)
The most interesting about this project is the feedback of the motors. Knowing the position of the motors is making this very accurate.
ohwp··on What can men do?
I think a lot of rules shouldn't be created. It's just enough to speak up.

Someone behaving bad while drinking? Talk to the person the next day.

Two people starting a relationship at work? Talk to them about having a bad time at work when they break up.

There should be only one policy: everyone is equal and deserves respect.

ohwp··on Depth data viewer for Google Camera
By taking pictures of different angles a point cloud can be generated from the depth data which can be triangulated into a 3D model.

I own a 3D printer and hope 3D scanning apps will soon be available.

On the other hand, this demo is showing 3D generation by just filming the object: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEOmzjImsVc

I wonder why this didn't take off.

ohwp··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
Sounds a little like Elos: http://www.elos.eu/productlines/aquariums/index.html
ohwp··on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
And XUbuntu is using almost half of the memory Ubuntu is using.
ohwp··on Lens Blur in the new Google Camera app
Nice! Since they got a depth map, 3D-scanning can be a next step.
ohwp··on Does pono's 24-bit audio matter? Hear for yourself.
Newborns can hear a SNR of about 120dB which is around 21-bit. So 24-bit seems useless for playing back audio.

But I always wonder how much of the sound we hear by feeling (skin, hair vibrations). Because maybe I can't hear 1Hz, but I can very well feel it.

ohwp··on Heartbleed disclosure timeline: who knew what and when
Because most companies don't care enough. A lot of companies are still hosting in the US.

But hackers overtaking banking for example might be a real risk.

ohwp··on Heartbleed disclosure timeline: who knew what and when
I doubt if the NSA did know about this bug. Because if they did they would have put the economy at a huge risk.
ohwp··on Glow-in-the-dark roads make debut in Netherlands
If you take a look at the video you will notice it doesn't work. The white lines are much brighter than the glow in the dark lines.

This is only an improvement when you are driving without lights (which is illegal).

ohwp··on How we got read access on Google’s production servers
Check the site of the blog post...
ohwp··on Is the Video of the Meteorite and the Skydiver Legit?
The only think that bothered me in this story was how quickly they determined the size.

When I watched the video I thought about the size of maybe 5cm.

ohwp··on Apple vs. Android: Developers see a socioeconomic divide
I think a lot of people underestimate how much money is going in in in-company-apps.

As an app developer I prefer Android over Apple because of how easy it is to deploy your app.

ohwp··on Kiteboat: sailing innovation on SF Bay
Reminds me of SkySails: http://www.skysails.info/english/, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SkySails

They claim a 10-35% fuel reduction.

ohwp··on Why xkcd-style graphs are important
This is also a problem in architecture. When a photorealistic render of a building is presented to a client the client assumes it will be built just like the render (beautiful sky and green trees included).
ohwp··on Redis new data structure: the HyperLogLog
Actually your post fooled me.
ohwp··on We may have witnessed a NSA "Shotgiant" TAO-like action
There will always be a person with top level access. In networking these people are chosen by trust.

For example. You can become a Juniper Networks Certified Internet Expert but that doesn't mean you can get a job. People still need to trust you.

And a good spy is someone people trust.

ohwp··on Virtual Reality is going to change the world
Nobody can make predictions so it's also hard to see where the future is going.

'People watching a mobile device all the time!?' Look at we are now...

I wouldn't be surprised when we will be programming with a VR set so you can put almost unlimited lines of code on your retina.

ohwp··on Wanelo: The First Million Users
About rebuilding from scratch: Most of the time this is a big NO in software. But I think a demo product is an exception.

A demo is just a demo. Quickly put together as a proof of concept. And I think going from demo to product is the one and only time when rebuilding from scratch makes sense.

So I think they made the right choice.

ohwp··on 1995 Vannevar Bush symposium: Closing Panel
Very interesting discussion.

One gem: "So the way I hope that it will work for the Web protocols and the WWW standards which I hope will be able to evolve from their kludgy current state towards that beautiful golden dream is that in any case where you lay down a standard, you also allow there to a second and you show a path whereby is a third one comes up that is better you can move in that direction on the heels of the first, keeping it honest and you have a hook in it to be able to hook it all together later on." (Tim Berners-Lee)

ohwp··on PowerVR GR6500: Ray tracing is the future and the future is now
I think the examples used are not very impressive. And I think path tracing (which is a kind of ray tracing) is more interesting for the future.

A nice blog about real time path tracing is: http://raytracey.blogspot.nl/

ohwp··on Moto 360
Round LCD display can already be bought online (for example: http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/round-lcd-display.html) Some suppliers can provide 5000 items per day.

I think they are used in cars as dials and gauges.

ohwp··on Show HN: Cloak – Incognito mode for real life
Simple fix: at least place your iTunes description:

"Cloak scrapes Instagram and Foursquare to let you know where all your friends, "friends," and nonfriends are at all times so you never have to run into that special someone. Think of it as the antisocial network."

ohwp··on MH370 – what happened
Some pilots report debris @ N9.72 E107.42 https://www.google.com/maps/place/9°43'12.0"N+107°25'12.0"E)

Edit: satellite images are provided for a search: http://www.tomnod.com/nod/challenge/malaysiaairsar2014

ohwp··on Planets³, an Open-World Voxel-Based rpg
Cool concept. But I think showing beautiful concept art is a big no when the actual gameplay looks like this: http://www.planets-cube.com/img/website/FR/ScreenIG_full_rez...

Now people will be disappointed.

ohwp··on Fractal landscape: musicians with guns - overstepping artifacts
I presume this was created with: Mandelbulb 3d (http://www.fractalforums.com/mandelbulb-3d/)
