ohthatsnotright··on New technology could reduce the amount of energy for air conditioning
Why on earth would you involve a larger waste of resources to summarize something which is capturable and displayable without?
ohthatsnotright··on What do I want? (SWE Burnout)
Are you me?

I'm going through a very similar situation.

What I've found that helps:

1. Wellbutrin (I've been depressed my whole life but had such a negative experience on Zoloft as a teenager that I stayed away until recently)

2. I quit working full-time writing shitty webapps and now exclude any company using NextJS, "AI" as a ChatGPT wrapper and Python. Aside from NextJS, it's not specifically the tech but the companies/startups adopting that tech which suck.

3. Downsized my life significantly and moved to some land.

4. Started a non-tech hobby (farming and building) and take on tech side projects I'm actually interested in.

The part time gig sucks because it's nice to have money, but having money at the cost of scrum or product "owners" who generate garbage from ChatGPT and call it a user story was really burning me out.

I've got a few long-term irons in the fire for starting companies, and in the mean time limp by on part time work with ample time to direct toward what I want to do (or chores because even though I didn't leave the US I did move to a place where keeping up with the growth of plants occupies a significant portion of my time). Once my spouse lands a job of some kind we'll be better off financially.

ohthatsnotright··on Move over, remote jobs. CEOs say borderless talent is the future of tech work
Claim to be hiring. I'm not convinced most postings are legitimate.
ohthatsnotright··on Show HN: I created an After Effects alternative
I had a Macintosh Quadra 660AV that had 16MB of RAM and was able to edit multiple-gigabytes of video. Not everything needs to be in memory all of the time to effectively edit video in a non-linear fashion.
ohthatsnotright··on Almost 50% would refuse job offer with no remote work option – survey
The situation is even worse if you happened to move to a US territory because you're in a quasi-unemployable zone since US companies won't hire in most of the territories (I have never been given a specific reason) and the EU basically bans business with a few of them for odd tax reasons (that shouldn't apply since the banking system is still run by US institutions).
ohthatsnotright··on Generative AI Is Not Going to Build Your Engineering Team for You
> No one was arguing that AI was going to build an engineering team

I don't think the CEO of NVIDIA agrees with your statement here[0] if he's advocating for nobody learning to code anymore because AI will do it all for the domain experts, which would remove the need for an "engineering team" in his view.

ohthatsnotright··on Ask HN: Anyone just say "no" to leetcode interviews at this point?
I'd love to be getting interviews to turn down, at this point.
ohthatsnotright··on Show HN: CommitAsync – $100K+ dev jobs 100% remote only
Are you hiring? I'll take that bet, and I'm looking.
ohthatsnotright··on Companies with return-to-office mandates face losing their most valuable workers
> I could just move to anywhere in the US tomorrow without issue.

As someone who did that, be careful. It's not all sunshine and puppies. Many employers promise they can support a move or it's fine but then when you update your address in the HR system it becomes a different story. I certainly wouldn't advise anyone move to a US territory if they think they can just move without issue, employers absolutely will not hire here (not even Gusto).

ohthatsnotright··on The Washington Post Tells Staff It's Pivoting to AI
Well, maybe we'll get good recommendations on the type of glue to put in our pizza sauce with the new hard-hitting pieces sure to come out of WaPo.
ohthatsnotright··on DuckDuckGo was down
I've been migrating away from google with their recent changes because it's gotten less and less useful in getting me the answers. DDG has done better, but it's not as good as Google used to be before it was taken over by MBAs.
ohthatsnotright··on Meta AI chief says large language models will not reach human intelligence
Maybe you can try showing how LLMs score better than human intelligence and what metrics you're using to quantify that, and then refuting his arguments with research and supporting evidence. Right now your take looks like you're a shill hoping to cash in on this bubble before it pops.
ohthatsnotright··on Discussion: Job seekers can't find a job and Employers can't find an employees
Personal experience trying to get hired as a US citizen in a US territory. Most companies simply reject without any sort of interview and when I ask (and get a reply) it's always because of location.
ohthatsnotright··on Computer-science majors graduate into a world of fewer opportunities
After 4 years as an apprentice digging ditches by hand, if you got lucky enough to find a company that would hire someone fresh out of school (because none of them hire fresh off the street without some kind of related experience).
ohthatsnotright··on Discussion: Job seekers can't find a job and Employers can't find an employees
Unless you're looking to be hired in the US and live in a US territory, in which case you'll be hard pressed to find any employer who will hire you.
ohthatsnotright··on Bossware is a big legal risk
I set my Slack status to offline permanently, never allow it to show my presence. It's great.
ohthatsnotright··on America is in the midst of an extraordinary startup boom
I thought the crypto-bros were annoying but the generative LLM bubble is far, far worse for everyone.
ohthatsnotright··on Recruiters are going analog to fight the AI application overload
All I got from that was some spam and "defi" recruiting for whatever Ponzi scheme the cryptocoin community is hot on right now.
ohthatsnotright··on Google layoffs hit Flutter team
Good to see a $2T market cap company doesn't have enough revenue to retrain and reassign these employees. I'd hate to think what the shareholders would have to endure had they not done layoffs.
ohthatsnotright··on Ask HN: Who are your favorite tech youtubers
Quite a few of mine are already mentioned but if you're into retro-computers or restoration, I find Usagi Electric to be an incredible wealth of knowledge: https://www.youtube.com/@UsagiElectric

ohthatsnotright··on Women Who Code Closing
Your first link doesn't show what you think it does, but there are quite a number of articles about Musk losing advertisers on Twitter (and even telling them to go f themselves).

Your second link on Tesla clearly indicates the downward trend, and this is also reflected in Tesla's latest sales. Gonna be a wild earnings call: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/tesla-stock-price-elon-musk-ele...

ohthatsnotright··on Women Who Code Closing
Which occurred primarily before he took over Twitter and ran it into the ground while at the same time tanking the goodwill people had for Tesla.

It really seems unlikely one human can split themselves between so many projects and keep all of them successful unless they dis-engage from a few and let those they hired run the show (mostly how he's behaved with SpaceX). If the person is like this they likely don't deserve the sort of compensation talked about in this article.

ohthatsnotright··on Women Who Code Closing
Musk is showing that it really is impossible to do it all, but the rules don't apply to C-suite.
ohthatsnotright··on The real reason for tech layoffs: to invest in AI
You'd think for all the lip-service given to how employees are their most valuable resource they would at least consider re-training. Some developers (myself included) have zero interest in LLM-hype train and would gladly take a severance package, but others would certainly want to up-skill and they already know the culture and company. Seems much cheaper than fire/hire.
ohthatsnotright··on Tesla Cybertruck No Match for Car Wash
I don't see the CEO of Ford liking antisemitic tweets or conspiracy theories. Musk has dug his grave himself, he had plenty of goodwill before his recent dive .
ohthatsnotright··on Tesla to lay off more than 10% of its staff
And make sure the bean counters are kept busy somewhere else, otherwise they're just going to produce the same garbage that comes out of any MBA run manufacturing firm located in China. MBAs are the scourge of reliable products, they drive everything to shit all in the name of a few pennies of "cost optimization."
ohthatsnotright··on Kobold letters: HTML emails are a risk
You can setup a Google app automation to do this for you.

I did for e.g. knowbe4 since all their test emails have the same header information. It made it quite easy to never see any of their attempts, though I did have to check every once in a while to see if I'd been signed up for any random learning and it removed those emails as well..

ohthatsnotright··on Anarchy in the US (The Revolution That Almost Happened)
Great book on some of this history, and a fun read: https://www.amazon.com/Deadly-Times-Bombing-Americas-Forgott...
ohthatsnotright··on Experienced engineers are struggling to get hired
Here I was thinking $95/hr was pretty good for app development.
ohthatsnotright··on The /unblock API from Browserless: dodging bot detection as a service
I can't give examples (I did the work for a company so I don't own it) but starting at [0] [1] should get you to the internals. It definitely carries some risk of Firefox Nightly just randomly breaking when it updates but this solution got us beyond quite a number of bot detectors so if you're willing to risk Firefox Nightly it's possible. We didn't need nearly the flexibility something like Puppeteer has since we were injecting rrweb into the target page to record the DOM mutations and sending those to other clients.

That will give you a good start on where to even begin looking. web-ext is insanely handy for launching Firefox with a WebExtension already installed (but I did a lot of other work around this to productize the offering).
