ohthatsnotright··on Ask HN: How does one build large front end apps without a framework like React?
It's unexpectedly mutable unless you've closely read the documentation, been bitten by the mutations, or are doing very simple date manipulations.

It's a great library, but it does need fewer footguns. date-fns is a good alternative.

What a strange thing to ask for a citation on when CEO pay, stock buy backs and corporate dividends are at all time highs while worker pay and honestly just affording to live continue to crater.
ohthatsnotright··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
Can you tell me how all those immigrants "flaunting the law" were affording food and rent, if not for a U.S. citizen paying them for their labor? Why are we not going after those who pay first? Nip the problem in the bud.

ohthatsnotright··on Typing 118 WPM broke my brain in the right ways
I think the problem with this approach is that when I type, I don't type formatting because prettier can do that for me.
ohthatsnotright··on Car companies are in a billion-dollar software war
When I started my career I had a very keen interest in the embedded space, but when it pays half of what CRUD webapps pay I quickly changed to software only. I still tinker with embedded on the side and maybe at some point I can justify the cut in pay to go back to something I'd prefer to work on.

Not for long, given who will be running the next administrations FDA, and the general cult of "de-regulation" taking hold.

I've struggled finding work that is other than 40 hour a week body shops. Where do you look for these magical clients that will take variable time engagements?

ohthatsnotright··on On over-engineering; finding the right balance
If the MBA-management class wanted good software they wouldn't be so short sighted, but it's all about the pump-and-dump right now.

ohthatsnotright··on Show HN: OBS Live-streaming with 120ms latency
If it's a separate layer or different server you can bet that someone will figure out how to remove it from the DOM, hide it, or prevent it from even loading.
ohthatsnotright··on Ask HN: I don't want to be a Software Engineer any more. What else could I do?
In the US it's common for entry level or apprentice to be the ones making a trench on residential jobs. It's part of the hazing culture, my best guess, that the older workers pass down. I hired electricians and they did the trenchwork with shovels.
ohthatsnotright··on Show HN: OBS Live-streaming with 120ms latency
> It feels wrong to me that a streaming service is able to modify video however it pleases.

This would significantly complicate services such as Twitch and YT Live going to server-side ad insertion if the source video were E2E. I think server-side ad insertion is likely the only method available for providers that isn't able to be circumvented by ad-block or DNS blocking plugins.

ohthatsnotright··on Ask HN: I don't want to be a Software Engineer any more. What else could I do?
Electrician generally requires a number of years working under supervision in order to get your apprenticeship, journeyman and then master status. A not so insignificant part of that supervised work is just digging trenches or other hard physical labor and not actually running circuits or wiring things and you're not really allowed to do solo work until you're a master electrician so starting your own company takes a while at relatively low pay, long hours and hard labor. It's tough to transition to later in life.

Working on software rarely, especially at large companies, means you have any sort of agency over the features of the software. That's Not Your Job (TM).
ohthatsnotright··on Ask HN: How do you work as a tech lead?
If your team is waiting a full day to "surface issues" you've got some deep and troubling communication problems that a daily meeting isn't going to solve.
