ohples··on The KDE community is moving to GitLab
Great send me a link to your code. I want to browse it real quick and look over it, before I pull it.

Oh wait, git over ssh doesn't show a web view.

ohples··on Apollo – Funding for Moonshots
Something something socialism, something bootstraps.

ohples··on Architects and engineers are turning old shipping containers into mobiled ICUs
Most hotels don't have central air per say, at least in the room. Each room has one of those standalone units usually near the window.

I can't find the clip right now but in one of NY Gov Cuomo's briefings they had an guy from (I think from the Engineers Corps) talk about this.

ohples··on An Ode to Driving in America
I wish that were the case but there are minimum parking laws in place in a lot of place that prevents that.

And yes most cities I've been to tend not to charge for parking at night or on the weekends.

ohples··on An Ode to Driving in America
Buses and delivery truck don't need giant parking lots, which can't be used for anything else.
ohples··on An Ode to Driving in America
Maybe if we didn't have to spend billions of dollars per year maintaining an unsustainable highway system we could maybe do something about those needles.

And we not just talking gas tax, billions has been stolen from the general fund to prop up the highway trust fund: https://www.pgpf.org/budget-basics/budget-explainer-highway-...

ohples··on An Ode to Driving in America
Not just that, living (or just being in) a city with cars is also terrible. Its lose lose for everyone.
ohples··on An Ode to Driving in America
As a member of that anti-car crowd, I think most of us would be happy with just banishing cars from city and most residential centers. We want to make cars an option, not a requirement.

Having too many cars also starts to encroach on other peoples freedoms via noise pollution, smog, less open space, etc.

Also, keep in mind we are talking about something that kills and injures a large number of people a year.

My guess is it might stick around on lower end iPads for a bit. That and Macs which don't even have face id yet.

Even if it comes to higher end Macs it will probably be absent from lower end ones.

ohples··on Amazon, Instacart delivery workers strike for coronavirus protection and pay
From my understanding, this structure already exists in some form, where a hiring hall is used. Essentially, workers are employees of the the union, and are contracted out to companies as needed. The union typically handles qualifications, and benefits.
ohples··on Ask HN: Linux Laptop Options for 2020?
IMHO On a laptop there isn't' much benefit . But on a monitor >= 32 inch it's great
ohples··on CollegeHumor shuts down
I think it's more accurate to say CollegeHumor is no longer a going concern.
ohples··on Drivers Refuse to Put Down Their Phones. People Keep Dying
> Any of these should result in an immediate ban on your license for a long time.

Although I agree the reason this has (and may never) happen is that (atleast in America) we have been forced in a world where cars are basically required due to car-first development, so to take away someones license basically takes away employment opportunities, friends, and other basic necessities. People will spend a lot of time and money fighting traffic offenses, just so they don't lose there ability to drive due to the detrimental effects it has.

We have to make it stupid simple to drive because we have basically made that a requirement to function in normal society.

The only alternative (which I think we need to do) is to transform our transportation and development policies to make cars either optional or not needed at all.

ohples··on Two of America's biggest coal plants closed this month
Wrong. People commiting to renewables early drive and support the market, which overtime drives down prices due to more and more people improving the tech and manufacturing process, which is what leads to the prices to come down.
ohples··on NASA Flew Gas Detectors Above California, Found ‘Super Emitters’
Not sure how effective it is, but it's possible to collect methane from landfill and use it to generate heat and electricity. From my understanding the emission from burning it are way better then just letting it leak into the air.

My university had a big methane line run from a landfill 2 towns over and used it in the cogen plant to generate power and steam for heat.

ohples··on Ask HN: How do B2B startups sell to corporations?
No they have policies against paying for those concerts or golf games.
ohples··on VW’s $50B Bet on an Electric Hatchback
That's a good one, thanks!
ohples··on VW’s $50B Bet on an Electric Hatchback
This is an interesting video that talks about the issues facing the German car industry with the move to EV. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcXjVxaKzv4

One of the things they talk about that I find interesting is how different EVs are from ICE cars.

I think we all assume that the companies that have gotten good at making cars, should be able to adapt to EVs, but it's a fundamentally different problem space. EVs and ICE may look alike on the outside, but are very different on the inside. I can't think of a good analogy, but if someone has one please share.

ohples··on Centralised DoH is bad for privacy
From my understanding there is no reason a OS level resolver library can't support DoH, I am surpised we haven't seen whatever Linux uses add support for it. Or maybe it did and I missed it.

ohples··on FedEx Ends Ground-Delivery Deal with Amazon
I tried to get something delivered to my office (I work in a office tower in the downtown of a city). We have a loading dock, logistics team, etc. Normally Fedex, UPS, etc work out the details to get the code to access the loading dock, etc and the logistics team handles getting packages to me.

I got a call once from a Amazon guys saying he had my package, I went down to the lobby to see he was basically unloading a pallet of packages in our fancy lobby. Needless to say our logistics team has tried to work with Amazon to get stuff delivered right, but we still seem to have issues.

ohples··on New York City Neighbors Build Cheaper Way to Connect to Web
Are you talking about turning smartphones into mesh network routers? I would imagine this would kill your battery rather quickly.

Also, it would probably require rooting the phone to install the necessary routing software.

There are a whole host of other reasons but those two are the easiest to explain.

ohples··on The New Austrian Railways' Intercity and Nightjet Sleeper Train Interior Design
I have even seen on some airlines (Alaska) that are doing away with seat backs screens on newer flights you can pay to rent a tablet if you don't already have one, want an extra one, etc.
