ohadpr··on Website Builder Webflow (YC S13) Went from Near Bankruptcy to $72M Series A
It's because they were able to build a decently large business purely with their seed founding + ongoing revenues (It's called an A round because they've only ever raised a seed)
ohadpr··on Show HN: Switch from Medium to your own blog
The CLI version is pretty cool, if you'd like a more point-and-click experience try: https://www.stackbit.com/medium/ (Disclaimer: we created this a few weeks ago)

It uses the same Medium export process and lets you pick what Site Generator to use (e.g. Gatsby, Hugo, Jekyll) and more importantly it lets you pick between a variety of CMS like Contentful, NetlifyCMS, Forestry and DatoCMS.

Oh there are also several Blogging themes to pick with and your new imported blog can be up and running in 1-2 minutes.

ohadpr··on Notion – All-in-one workspace for notes, tasks, wikis, and databases
It is an extremely frustrating practice (emailing you the password). I find that I have to go through this every few days for whatever reason and I've had cases where the email from Notion took five minutes to arrive.
ohadpr··on The art of creating very tiny programs for the 80x86 family of CPUs
I think my first assembly book was a Norton one :-)
ohadpr··on The art of creating very tiny programs for the 80x86 family of CPUs
Many folks who used to write 0x86 assembly code love size coding compos, especially demoscene folks.

Me and a couple of friends were able to implement the game of Nibbles (Snake on old Nokia phones) in 70 bytes. Someone else managed to accomplish it in 48.

ohadpr··on How Useful Is Tufte for Making Maps? (2007)
Same here - loved the book and was very excited for the one day lecture but it was probably the most boring and banal one I’ve ever attended.
ohadpr··on Hosting My Static Site
The term 'static sites' is somewhat misused, its a spectrum that goes from static pages edited locally that get 1 page-view a month to the front-end code for large corporations which get millions of page-views a month. All of those fall under the modern usage of the term 'static sites'. As you move up that spectrum your static site suddenly needs to get built using a bunch of tooling, its dynamic in the sense that it interacts with many backend services via JS APIs, etc.

If you have a single HTML page which you edit manually and enjoy uploading to S3 using Transmit then sure that's a legitimate workflow and I've used it for years before migrating all of my sites to Netlify. Once your front-end needs its own build process there's a huge benefit in utilizing a service like Netlify to run your builds for you. This also gets you into the workflow of using source-control for your front-end (you're either doing it already or editing HTML files locally) and its just so convenient when your commits trigger instant builds+deploys - one less thing to worry about. In fact Netlify's new Deploy Previews and Deploy Contexts which build+deploy as many of your branches as you'd like is enabling completely new workflows that are genuinely helping teams scale their capacity because they spend less time on the mechanics of everything.

Like some have mentioned Netlify is like 9 tools built into one service taking care of you all along the way, and of course there's a free plan which beats GitLab/GitHub Pages every day of the week because that's what the company is set up to do, its not just a side feature they are maintaining. Netlify serves small personal blogs and main sites for billion dollar companies and spends its resources further developing tools to make developers and devops people's lives easier.

So once you commit and Netlify builds it also does atomic cache invalidations, deploys to a CDN, offers integrated pre-rendering/form-handling, password protection, snippet injection and many more features to make life simpler. Can you do all these things manually on your computer or on a VPS? of course you can, but are we developers lazy and enjoy tooling and services that let us spend time coding as opposed to devops'ing what some have already commoditized? yep. If you prefer your own Git installation and don't see benefit in using Github/Gitlab/Bitbucket/etc then Netlify is likely not for you.

Disclosure: I'm a Netlify investor and avid user.

ohadpr··on JavaScript game of Tron in 219 bytes
beautiful.

i once participated in a similar competition only that it was in x86 Assembly, my friends and I brought it down to 70 bytes and the winner from Finland did it in 48!

I think it just uses your personal email history to create clusters of common recipients
ohadpr··on Ask HN: I'm at a crossroads, any input is appreciated
First of all feel good, having many options and opportunities at a young age is a considerable achievement.

Secondly, we're looking for summer interns who understand programming but will focus on connecting with and marketing to other developers. If you're self-directed then you can do it from anywhere in the world. We may also be opening a live/work pad in SF soon so that may be an option too.

ohadpr··on I'm 16, and need advice
Work on finding like-minded people and start working on projects together. These people may end up being your co-founders in some future company you'll start, and the more time you know each other ahead of time the better.

Get a decent amount of knowledge about a broad-range of topics, unless you are inherently interested in something very specific. This will instill in you a lack of fear from new subjects that will be one of your greatest assets. Most people in the world don't do stuff because they are afraid, used to something comfortable, etc. If you turn 'not knowing' something into a challenge then you'll be a huge asset to other people, not to mention to yourself.

Don't try to over-think things at this point, you'll earn a lot by simply creating and improving your ability to create.

Be happy that you found something you love, most people struggle with this for all of their life.

Israel's a decent place to improve these skills (I came from there, went through a similar path) so look in your school/neighborhood/university for peers and go get it.

ohadpr··on How to have lunch with the brightest minds in SV?
nice sites but is there a more direct and effective way to reach 1 on 1 with these guys?
ohadpr··on Xcode now costs US$ 4.99
I'm sure Steve Jobs is going to reply to one of the hundreds of emails he'll be getting on this subject, hopefully his answer won't be "Because. - Sent from my iPhone"
ohadpr··on What's a Post-PC device?
I actually believe that PCs are so == Computers for most of humanity that its perfectly fine to discuss post-PC devices

I personally think that a Post-PC device is simply a device that for some (and later many) people replaces a PC in their day-to-day computer-related tasks. So if whatever they used to do on a PC they now mostly do on say an iPad then an iPad would be a post-PC device.

ohadpr··on Create a website using Dropbox and a text editor
I think this is a great step in the right direction, publishing is getting simplified and with the advent of cheap storage that can be easily placed behind a webserver the options for static websites are quite interesting.

I foresee more services of this type and more power to you guys for building this, I highly recommend exploring and iterating around more simple ways for people to 'create webpages' by simply dropping 'something' 'somewhere.

ohadpr··on Review my HTML5 game Freeciv.net again one year later
Once you get to the graphics/interaction they are great. I recommend: * Try to embed a live-game into your main page, it took me 2 minutes to navigate the options until I could get some graphics on the screen. * While you're at it make sure you embed a fully mature/active game so that we can see how awesome it looks when the screen is full of stuff. * The UI flow is very non-intuitive, perhaps you've invested most of the dev in the game itself but its hidden behind a dozen screens that are hard to navigate.
