Is there actually an international West Africa tech scene? Or is it nation by nation?
oh_sigh··on Pizza Hut to lay off California workers after minimum wage increase
I suspect what will happen is the laid off drivers will still be delivering pizzas for Pizza Hut, but will be paid by Doordash et al instead of Pizza Hut, and will ultimately have reduced compensation.
oh_sigh··on NYT sues OpenAI, Microsoft over 'millions of articles' used to train ChatGPT
It's not an argument, it is a question. I'd like to know the answer as to whether the method matters to the courts.
oh_sigh··on NYT sues OpenAI, Microsoft over 'millions of articles' used to train ChatGPT
Does the law care about the method(whether it is ML or just reading the article from a database) if the model can spit out a verbatim copy of an article?
oh_sigh··on Stupid Patent of the Month: Selfie Contests
Patent trolls definitionally don't produce anything, so aren't going to run afoul of other patents. Squatting on shitty patents might be a good idea to prevent them from ever getting into a troll's portfolio, but it might be a good idea just to put the money towards invalidating patents that the biggest trolls use to extort money out of companies.
oh_sigh··on How big is YouTube?
I assume the cheat is something like using the playlist API that returns individual results for whether a video exists or not.

So you issue an API to create a playlist with video IDs x, x+1, x+2, ..., and then when you retrieve the list, only x+2 is in it since it is the assigned ID.

oh_sigh··on The great cousin decline
I bet $1 that OP knew that cousins existed.
oh_sigh··on The great cousin decline
Are the salty ones the ones that are free and empowered? I work at a big tech co with a lot of millenials making pretty good money, and no one that I come across seems salty.

But then I read sites like reddit r/antiwork or whatever and see all the salt, with people making sweeping generalized statements about how the entire millenial generation has been screwed over by boomers and will never move out of their mom's basement.

oh_sigh··on A Tesla owner says he got a $14,000 repair bill one day after buying a Model Y
Probably because the entire BI article linked makes no reference to it happening in England, and has various hints that it would have happened in America (like pricing things in USD, talking about taking it to the service center and not the service centre, referring to the NHTSA, etc).

Regardless, England has similar enough laws to America in this regard, such as the Consumer Rights Act of 2015.

oh_sigh··on The right to use adblockers
That sounds like Firefox made a bad decision to fund their operations by selling the default search engine space to an advertising company, then.
oh_sigh··on The right to use adblockers
Except that users are willing to pay for it, since a vast majority of them look at the ads and some of them even click on the ads.
oh_sigh··on Waymo outperforms comparable human benchmarks over 7M+ miles
Note that almost all Japanese railways started out as public sector projects, and were handed off to private sector to operate. Urban rail operations are within the wheelhouse of private organizations - but I don't think actually building them out is. At very best it could only be done with an extremely tight partnership between public and private sectors. With self driving cars, the private sector is taking more or less a unilateral decision to invest in them, something which cannot be done with pretty much any mass transit project.
oh_sigh··on A larger family worsens kids' cognitive development, suggests 30-year study
Your brother would probably understand that anecdotes aren't an argument against statistical phenomena. Or maybe you would, if you had half as many siblings.
oh_sigh··on Waymo outperforms comparable human benchmarks over 7M+ miles
Self driving cars are something that private companies can mostly do by themselves(beyond getting the okay from government to drive on public roads).

Public mass transit infrastructure can't really be created by private companies.

So, if you want mass transit, driverless cars really has nothing to do with it. Petition the government to get off their asses and do their job.

oh_sigh··on Clear wants to scan your face at airports – privacy experts are worried
I can say that I have never heard of a single person not flying somewhere because of the TSA or other security ruined flying for them. Maybe it wasn't actually good and you're just blindly believing the nostalgia of older folks.
oh_sigh··on Copyright claim against Tolkien estate backfires on LOTR fanfiction author
How would fanfic/other derivative works cut into sales of the source material? I don't know much about the world, but I would blindly wager that 99% of people who consume content like this have already consumed 100% of the source material, and are just itching for more.
oh_sigh··on Homelessness reaches highest reported level in the U.S. in 2023
Yes - America. Maybe that is an easier problem to solve since we did that, and we still have homeless people.

Actually, homelessness is easy to solve, but requires distasteful actions by the government, like involuntary commitment.

oh_sigh··on Homelessness reaches highest reported level in the U.S. in 2023
No, I'm just saying that you can't say that you solved homelessness when there are 4000 people homeless(in a country of 5m).
oh_sigh··on Homelessness reaches highest reported level in the U.S. in 2023
Nope:

> The number of homeless people in Finland has continuously decreased over the past three decades from over 16 000 in 1989 to around 4 000, or 0.08% of the population

oh_sigh··on Homelessness reaches highest reported level in the U.S. in 2023
One weird trick to solve homelessness: make the environment so unforgiving that any homeless people sleeping rough will die.
oh_sigh··on Homelessness reaches highest reported level in the U.S. in 2023
Has there been any society in the history of civilization that solved homelessness?
oh_sigh··on Location history data in Google Maps will soon be stored on user devices
Somehow I doubt that the company running a site that gets 8 hours of video uploaded every second is concerned about the storage size of a bunch of (lat, lon, time) tuples.
oh_sigh··on Location history data in Google Maps will soon be stored on user devices
Sometimes the thing you're looking for isn't something that you recognized as interesting in the moment.
oh_sigh··on The Darwin Awards: sex differences in idiotic behaviour
Except that a lot of risky male behavior doesn't impress most women. Maybe it impresses other risky-behaving men though, and the respect those risky-behaving men show the risk taker translates into more desirability from women.
oh_sigh··on The Darwin Awards: sex differences in idiotic behaviour
What culture treats men as idiots?

Yes, there are memes about clueless men, but there are also memes about clueless women - in fact, we have an entire genre of "blonde jokes" about them - which, note, are 99% about blonde women, not blonde men. The fact that these memes exist doesn't mean that society treats men(or women) as clueless generally.

oh_sigh··on There Once Was an Empire
You would also need to turn pretty much all of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, military men with a 30+ year track record of loyalty to the nation(and not an individual).

Otherwise, feel free to occupy a few buildings in DC for a couple of days, but don't cry when you're forcibly evicted by the Army and hanged for treason.

oh_sigh··on Applesauce pouches may have been contaminated on purpose, FDA foods chief says
40 years from now, I wonder what kind of health effects will be experienced by the millions of people who feel compelled to buy food and other products that go in/on their body from stores like Dollar Tree.
oh_sigh··on Interactive tour of James Clerk Maxwell's house
Does he ask everyone, or do you just have the je ne sais quoi of an engineer?
oh_sigh··on Today Is One of the Biggest Surveillance Votes. Will the FBI Stop Spying?
The borders are legally closed everywhere except designated border crossings.
oh_sigh··on Telecom Industry Is Mad Because the FCC Might Examine High Broadband Prices
Similar to your last comment, here in the Boulder region, you will find a lot of techies actually living in Longmont, about 15 minutes north of Boulder, because they have a really good municipal fiber ISP.
